-time skip that doesn't affect anyone else because we're badass-
When Robin awoke a while later, he found Cleo curled up beside him, still deep in sleep. Smiling slightly, he rolled over, being careful not to disturb her, and pulled himself to his paws. After squeezing round her body and out of the crate, he let out a sigh. Strangely, he felt happy. At peace. He could stay here, looking after Cleo, forever. But that wasn't how it worked in the city. Sooner or later, whether he liked it or not, something was going to happen. It always did. There were never any happy endings. Dropping his gaze to his paws, the tom stayed that way for a while, silent, thinking about nothing except what was to come.

Foxglove smiled back at Mordecai, looking away briefly to study the alley again. Thankfully, no one had emerged from it yet. She turned to face him again as he spoke. With a carefree laugh, she butted his shoulder, "And no one will get past you. I guess I'm safe then," Flicking her ears back, her own expression became more serious, "But seeing as she isn't going to touch either of us, she won't separate us. Or anything. We'll just keep an eye out for a while, we don't want to hurry into anything and mess it up." Foxglove tapped her tail on Mordecai's back, "Come on, oh strong, fearless protector. Lead me to a safe place where we can both rest. If we don't get a move on, Layla'll see us when she comes out--" Oops. She's specifically not told Mordecai that Layla had been in the alley because she hadn't wanted to worry him. Great. And also, she hadn't wanted him to cotton on to where she'd disappeared off to if he woke up in the night and noticed she'd gone. Because her and Layla really needed to have a little chat. Somewhere away from Mordecai, because no matter what he said, he wasn't getting involved. He wasn't a fighter, or a killer, that was Foxglove. She had the experience, unfortunately.
