Stars. They are magnificent things. A great ball of swirling gases and temperatures far above melting even something so hard as a diamond. Nothing could stop them, nothing could withstand the power they held. Get too close and you melted. One bad solar flare and that could be the end for any planets near by. They were great toxic beasts, who even in death caused so much destruction. And yet they were the most beautiful things in the whole universe. Their light so bright that it could be seen from trillions of miles away. A group formed a constellation, and even more formed the many galaxies with their swirls of colors and lights. It was like seeing the fireflies just before the last of the light drained from Earth's surface. What would it be like to be a star? To be out there with them, a great beacon of hope for thousands of species?
"Betel."
Maybe then he would be noticed, maybe then she would really see him. She liked adventure, so why couldn't he be that adventure? Be that star in the sky leading her along the way, become the hope that she searched for. It was why she was there, right?
"Betelgeuse!"
Startled, the canine twisted around from where he sat, the chains around his neck clinking against each other. He stared at one of his crew members for a moment in utter confusion, at the time unable to remember who she was or what she was doing there. Or where he was, for that matter. A sound of heavy gears grinding against each other woke him fully from his stupor, watching as great big metal sheets were pulled along a mechanized track to cover the massive widows on the Deck.
"Thank you, that is good enough. I think the dreamer has woken up at last." The dark female said to the dog at the control station, her voice rough and sardonic. Of course, this was Cancer. One of his superior officers on the Deck who was possibly the least eloquent of them all. But she was smart and knew what she was doing, more so than half of the crew. She was nearly as tall as he was, and Betelgeuse was in no way lacking of height. She was also stronger than many of the men on his crew and often got into brawls with them over the last slice of meat loaf or a prize bunk in the quarters. She was a pretty sort of dog, though, with midnight blue fur speckled with a creamy white. Most of which she ridiculously kept hidden by an oversized man's shirt, usually covered in bits of grease and dirt from the various machinery.
"What is it?" The captain asked, frowning at her for a moment before standing and heading for the door.
"We are landing Sir." She responded, mimicking his tone. "But if you would rather day dream some more about your pretty black eyed paramour I can take her for another circle before landing." God, God, how did she know everything? "What ever can you see in that face of hers? Those eyes just give me the creeps, you know." She had gone from jesting to insulting. If he didn't know any better he would have suggested jealousy. But Cancer didn't get jealous. She just didn't hide what she thought of people either.
"Not everyone can have pretty eyes like yours." He returned in a mocking voice, rolling his eyes. "Besides, it isn't her eyes that I am drawn to." To be honest, those black eyes sort of creeped him out sometimes too. But never enough to drive away his feelings for his quirky 'paramour'. Did Cancer know she wasn't using that word right? Or perhaps she thought he had had more success than was actually true. She had been more precise when calling him a dreamer, because that was the only time Réalta would probably ever be his lover; in his dreams.
He pushed through the flap of a door and walked out into the long central hallway of The Enterprise. It was one of five sky ships, great metal oval shaped ships that floated through the sky over Earth as a monitoring system. Ever since an explosion of growth in the forests a few years back, communication had become difficult between cities and nations. It was the job of the Wolf Ships, as the fleet was called, to monitor the spread of the forests and to relay messages between the major cities. The Enterprise was the biggest of the ships, and was usually used for the safe transport of high officials to other areas of the world or 'touring' the Earth for several months out of the year for scientists to view the forests below and collect samples. That being said, they rarely ever landed for a leave at the docks of Guldury, where the ship was built and crew carefully hand picked. Where Betelgeuse and most of his crew members were born. It was strange how much they all adored it, even though living there was always such a gamble, what with the many gangs and crooked police. Guldury certainly wasn't a hot spot for travel and vacationing. But it was home, nonetheless.
"What is it then? What about her do you like?" Cancer asked in her usual curiosity.
"Who are we talking about?" A voice came from behind them as Réaltra came walking along the hallway behind them, a smile forming on her face. And there she was, the perfect picture of beauty. Betelgeuse had been wrong, stars were not the prettiest things in the universe. Réaltra was. She was much shorter than either the Captain or his technician, or many other females as well. And he wasn't always fond of her eyes. But she had such a darling appearance, swirls of blues and whites. And, despite her adventurous tendencies, she had to be the nicest canine he had ever met. She was like an angel put down on Earth for him to have a light to shine away his doubts. She was his star. Betel was sure he was going to black out. "Does our captain like someone Cancer? We should help him out; set them up on a date or something. Who is it?" It was so normal, hearing that sweet kind voice setting up a date for someone else. What would she have thought if she would be setting up herself?
"Oh, I don't know. He wouldn't tell me." Cancer lied with a shrug, starting off for the dining hall. "I have been badgering him all night, but he won't tell me. He was just staring out the window again. We are landing soon, so maybe it is someone in Guldury." Réaltra started off after Cancer, clearly ready to be engrossed in a personal conversation about a man that was walking right behind them. If she was upset to consider that he was in love with someone in the city she didn't show it.
"Oh man, having to leave his love behind for months?" She whispered, looking back at him. "No wonder he is so quiet. He must feel so lonely without her."
"I can hear you." He said, sighing and shaking his head. Great, now he was going to have to come up with a way to kill this little story of Cancer's.
The large sky ship landed with relative ease in the large docking built specifically for the Enterprise. The giant air ship made all of the fishing boats and navy vessels seem like tub toys in comparison. As soon as Betel gave the signal for them to open the massive side doors the crew quickly unboarded the ship to meet their families that were waiting for them on the dock. A few cannons went off simultaneously with the launching of fireworks for a fantastic welcome home. The captain stood near the door and watched his crew reunite with their families, a slight smile on his face. That is until he felt two pairs of eyes staring over at him. His jaw twitched and the captain looked over to find Cancer and Réaltra watching him, Réaltra's expression was that of the most acute interest. Cancer just looked amused. The small canine's black eyed gaze then darted off toward the crowd and then back at him. She must have believed Cancer and was waiting to see if this girl of his would actually show up. An excited look crossed her face and Betel looked back to see a pretty girl coming up to him. He smiled graciously at the girl and bowed, unsurprised when she started thanking him.
"I am so glad he is back safe and sound. You are such a good captain, bringing my brother back in one piece. I was so scared he would not come back at all." Betelgeuse gave the girl a short report of how well her brother had been doing and what a hard worker he was, all the while looking over at the two females. Cancer was laughing at Réaltra, who now looked a little crestfallen. For being such a romantic he would have hoped that she could have at least shown a little interest in him, instead of always trying to find the 'perfect match' for him instead. Why couldn't she see that she was the perfect match?
The sister left soon enough and the three made their way down the dock and into the city. The city itself was quite large, expanding from the ocean almost all the way to the forest beyond. It wasn't a very clean city, most of the building falling apart in one way or another. The roads were full of cracks and the bridges that were built to ease the the time it took to travel about the city were becoming rusted and worn. Forgotten was perhaps the best word to describe it. Even if the Enterprise was built and docked there ever fall the city had become completely ignored and never received grants to clean the place up. They needed them badly.
Cancer had grown up in the same foster home as Betel had, both of their parents being killed during a terrible fire that gripped the city years and years ago. No one ever knew who Réaltra's parents were when she was found alone in the city's only park. So when they docked at home the three familyless dogs usually just booked an entire floor of one of the hotels for themselves and any of the crew that wished to stay. They didn't really have any family to go home to, besides the foster families who were usually too busy to see them. But Cancer and Betelgeuse always made an effort anyway. They would always be in debt to the kind old woman who had taken them in even though she was all out of space. So this was always their first stop.
They arrived at her small home, a three bedroom house that was situated under one of the many bridges in city. It certainly wasn't one of the best places to live, but it was definitely better than nowhere. The two girls stood there quietly as Betel pawed at the door. He smiled a little as he heard the scattering of little paws on the old wooden floor and a few thumps and bubbles of laughter as several little puppies slid right into the door. They shouted for Georgia to come, that someone was there before scuffling off to other areas in the house in a game of hide and seek. The old dog that opened the door looked very distracted, a purple blanket hanging loosely off of her.
"Darn weather, getting colder all the-" She stopped her frustrated rant, her blue eyes becoming bright as if youth had returned to her. She smiled and almost danced like a school girl, pushing the door open wide to let them in. "Betelgeuse! Cancer! It is so good to see you, it has been far too long."
Réaltra, as always, looked very uncomfortable there. She never ended up having a home, but bounced around from foster parent to foster parent until she was old enough to leave them all behind. Betel knew she would never understand why Cancer and he loved this old woman so much. Maybe that was the reason she wouldn't just fall in love with him already. She never grew up with constant company, others to love. What if she never loved anyone? Georgia caught him staring and smiled broadly, but only for a moment before turning to Cancer who was telling her another story of their life on the air ship. She talked on and on about possibly getting Betelguese to let her show all of the foster kids the inside of the Enterprise when Georgia got a funny look on her face. She became a little glum and looked off, which made Cancer stop talking.
"What is it? What is the matter? You don't like that idea?" She asked, craning her head to see the old dog's face.
"No, no the idea is really great. It's just... You two turned out so well; why couldn't everyone?" She asked, sort of shrugging her shoulders. The foster pups peaked at them from behind a cracked door, several noses visible through the small opening.
"What do you mean?" Betelguese asked, tilting his head. "Not everyone can work on an air ship, but I thought that the others have stable jobs as well. I mean, they aren't the best jobs, but-"
"It's Jesse. He-" She stopped, looking back over at the cracked door and watched as the noses disappeared and little paws scampered down the hall. She waited a moment, listening for them before looking back at her former foster kids. "He joined a gang." She whispered. Cancer's jaw dropped and Betel didn't look like he was certain what to think of that at all.
"But surely, no. No, he is too smart to wind up in a gang. I mean, I know he was always rather... Rebellious, but this?" His words came almost as a hiss from his efforts to keep them at a whisper. "There is no way he would join a gang. He doesn't need to."
"But he has. I promise, he has. They call him the Brown Recluse now and everything. I think he may even be leading them now." Her voice grew from a whisper, but never became loud as they were filled with such hurt. She looked like she thought it was her fault. Like she had failed him or something. But there was no way Georgia could fail anyone. Betel stood, his face twisted a little in disgust and anger.
"Where is he?"

Minni - Kaylee - Thomas
Mom - Child - Dad
(Minni's POV)
I shivered horribly, but I put my blanket over Kaylee instead. She loved this blanket. It was always nice and warm, even though she already had two blankets on her. "No, mommy, you're shivering, I'm not. Take it back." she said warmly, melting my heart to an even further point. "What if I refused?" I said simply, joking around with her and smiling like always. "Mommy, sometimes I wonder.. Would you do anything for me?" she asked simply, shoving the blanket onto me. "Yes." I said, and with that I lay down in the bed next to hers, smiling still. "Promise." I added.
~
Thomas came home, stole Kaylee's favourite blanket, and sat down to chew on a bit of chocolate. I could hear Kaylee crying form the other room and the first thing I did was smack the chocolate out of his hand, tug on the blanket so he finally let go, and slapped him for making her cry so many times before this. I went up to Kaylee in her bedroom, gave her a chunk of chocolate and put the blanket over her. "Mommy, you know how you promised to do anything for me?" she asked, chewing on the chocolate. "Yes." I said simply, eating on a small amount of chocolate myself. "Could you make daddy go away?" she asked. And with that, three days later Thomas was gone and we were divorced.
~
Kaylee brightened up a lot after this, and I did too.
But to this day I wonder why I didn't get married again.
Ah, that's right.
I promised Kaylee not to.
why do i and everyone
i love, chose people
who treat us like
we're nothing
because we
accept the love
we think we
deserve.

Wishful Thinking
Dear Samm,
I know we've been friends for longer then I can remember. I know that you don't think of me any other way, but have you ever thought that maybe I liked you as more then a friend? Maybe I do. Maybe I'm enraptured by your deep blue eyes. Maybe I'm obsessed with your smile. Maybe... I love you. This probably comes as a shock to you, and I understand if you never talk to me again after this, but I need to tell you my true feelings. I don't know how to control them! Each time I see you, they get stronger and more passionate. Each time you look at me with those gorgeous eyes, I feel like I'm going to melt. When you need a shoulder to cry on, I'm always there for my girl. I know I'd be better for you then any guy you meet. I know I'd never leave you, like all those other boys did. They hurt you, I understand. I've been through that with you, and trust me, I would have hurt each and every one if you weren't there to hold me back.
I understand you like no one else does, and I love you for who you are, not for who I can change you to be. Please. Please read this letter, and don't hate me. I think I'd die. No. It wouldn't kill me, It would do much worse..
There you have it, my whole heart poured into one piece of paper. I hope you appreciate it.
I love you more then you know.
~Tonna
Tonna looked at the paper in her hands, silent tears streaking down her face. She'd never love me. If I gave her this, I don't think Samm would ever talk to me again. She though as hot anger suddenly raged through her. Tonna turned to glance at her mirror, and glared at her reflection. You deserve this, you deserve everything that's happening in your life. What you don't deserve is Samm. You'll never get her, so just give up! Tonna reached for her paper, and crumpled it in her hands. I'd never have the guts to give it to her, anyway. She though, as she tossed it into the trash. As Tonna looked at the crumpled letter, waves of pain and sorrow overtook her. She trudged over to her bed, and sobbed into a pillow. I don't deserve her, I'll never deserve her... She'll never be mine.

Painful Realization(The day after the above story)
"And it was just so funny!" Samm said, laughing hysterically. Gosh, your laugh is contagious... Tonna thought, watching Samm's every move. "I love your laugh!" She said, instead. Samm blushed "Thanks!" She laughed, "You're a really good friend, I'm glad you're in my life." Tonna looked away, Gosh, you're killing me... She thought. "You don't realize how happy I am that we are friends, Samm. You're the only thing that makes sense in my crazy life!" Samm laughed, "Don't I know it!" She got up from off of my bed, where we were laying, attempting to stay on topic: Playing Truth Or Dare. Samm fished out a piece of paper from her backpack, and walked back to my bed. "This is my husband. Well, in my mind he is." She said, thrusting the picture in my hands. I looked down at it and saw a guy I could never compete with. "He's gorgeous! Congratulations!" I joke, knowing that's what she expected me to do. "I know, right?" She said, her face flushing pink. "He's so perfect! I bet he'd be a good boyfriend." That's it. I can't handle this anymore... I thought. "Samm, I need to go to the bathroom. I'll be back in a little while, those burritos did something funky to my system!" I said, making the first excuse I could to get out of this torture. "Eww! TMTH!" Samm said, laughing. "Okay, girlie, take your time!" I nodded, and walked towards the bathroom farthest away from my bedroom. When I got there, I leaned against the wall and slowly sank down until I had my head rested on my knees. Why does this always happen to me? I thought, as I felt hot, stinging tears in my eyes. I know I would be a better girlfriend to her then any boy would. I would treat her like she was as rare as a blue diamond. I looked in the mirror across from me, and started sobbing. I don't deserve her, why do I even try? She's so flawless, and gorgeous, and... Not mine. The more I thought about this, the more violent the sobs racked through me. She dreams of boys that wouldn't even second glace her, and yet she doesn't realize that Mrs. Right has always been by her side. She doesn't know that every time I see her with another person, I imagine I'm in their place. I love her, more then I've ever loved anyone. I wish she'd reali- A knock on the door interrupted my thoughts. "Tonna..? Are you okay, you've been in here for a while. I'm worried." It was Samm. "You...You're worried about me?" I asked, stalling so I could try and conceal the streaks down my face. "Are you serious, Tonna? You're my best friend, the best I've ever had! Of course I'm worried about you." I unlocked the door and Samm burst in. She took one look at me, then her face got serious. "Why were you crying, missy!" She asked, looking at me with those huge, gorgeous blue eyes. "I-I...Uhm.." I didn't know where to start. Do I tell her the truth..? I looked at the ground, then back at her. "I'm just lonely, I wish I had a boyfriend..." I lied, but I'm pretty sure Samm couldn't tell. "Awhh! Tonna, I'm so sorry. You could have told me, you know! I would have been there for you." You aren't here for me know, you can't even tell I'm lying! I've been lying for quite a while now, it's about time you noticed! I thought bitterly, "I will next time, Samm. Thanks for putting up with me, and for being such a good friend." I said, hugging her and cherishing every moment of it.

Regrets (A few hours after the above story)
I could feel my heart hammering against my chest, I could hear it thumping through my thoughts, I knew I shouldn't do this, but I did.
"Samm. I..." I trailed off, looking sadly in her eyes. "I need to tell you something. Something that could change our relationship for good or bad." Samm's face grew white, as a million things I could say raced through her head. Today, this minute, is the only chance I'll get to tell her. She's expected home soon, so we won't have much time to talk about it after I tell her... I thought But how do I tell her..? Samm pulled a blanket over her shoulders, and looked quizzically towards me. "What is it, Tonna?" She asked. I pulled my hat over my eyes, and hung my head. "Samm..." I said, shifting my hat so I could see her gorgeous face. "I think... I think I love you." My heart rate grew quick, as her eyes widened. She laughed nervously, "You mean, like a friend?" She asked hopefully, her face still white with shock. "No, Samm. I mean more then a friend. More then a best friend, more then I've loved anyone, more then I think I will love anyone. Samm, I want to be with you for the rest of our short lives on earth. I want to stay with you even after that. I want you to love me too... Samm..." I trailed off, as her face grew cold. "I can't believe you'd do this to me, Tonna!" She snapped, "You were supposed to be my best friend, not a lesbian! Not some freak!" I winced, lowering my head as hot tears streamed down my face. "This will never work. Never. I don't think I can be around you now that I know you love me!" Her face reddened as I glared at her, which I rarely do, "I thought you'd stick with me, I thought we could get through this! That's why I told you, that's why you know..." My voice grew quiet. Samm turned to the door, "I have to go. This is goodbye, Tonna." She said firmly. I pressed my face against a pillow. "Goodbye, my love... I whispered, the words barely audible.
