Jahmar is childish. He trusts easily, and is -very- open about everything if he likes someone. It's almost as if he never went through his teenage years socially, but only academically. Incredibly self-assured would be one way to describe him - he always seems to know what he's doing (even if he has absolutely no idea). His social graces are lacking, but he makes up for that with his easy smile and generally outgoing attitude. Few things seem to scare him, save for extreme darkness - luckily for him, he can control fire. He laughs often; sometimes at absolutely nothing, save for happiness. This can make him seem odd, but it still is likable.
However, Jahmar also has the reckless abandon of a child. He can easily get upset, or feel like he's being challenged - which leads him to do things without thinking. This has gotten him into a fair amount of trouble over the years, but nothing has changed. Perhaps this is even worse due to his physical strength.
Even with his lack of caution, Jahmar often takes a leadership role. He commands very easily; has a proud air about him which more insecure people often falter under, and strong ones clash with.

Jahmar grew up without a father - the man left his family when his baby sister was born 2 years after him. His older brother, Daniel, and mum, Jaydaa, more or less ran the household. They lived in a small apartment in downtown Toronto - no one in his family went to college, although the baby of the family (Jamilla) was going to major in the culinary arts before she realized it was too difficult.
They learned of his being a pyromancer when he reached puberty, and hid it carefully. Sure, there were a few rumours among Jahmar's friends - but they also joked about Daniel being a magical 'chick magnet'. They definitely were not the best source of info. When the letter was received, the family ultimately decided that if going to the academy meant one family member's life would be better it would be for the best, especially if he could get a good job and help them in the future.

Jahmar has a very intense fear of total darkness. Other things that frighten him are large spiders, failure, and marriage/commitment.
