Skittles, my hamsters do that too, there's nothing you can really do about it.

Guys, I just got a new gray-banded longhair male hamster! He has the face of my other hamster, Coconut :) His name is Jazz. I wasn't going to get a hamster, but I talked my mom into it, we weren't even going to go to the petstore today, but i'm sure glad we did! He's about 2 months old...so cute<33 I have 5 hamsters now, and 12 in total :)

My hammy used to chew on the cage all the time. I got him some things to chew on, and he basically stopped. I would recomend any of these products:

Image
(Called "Super Pet Nut Knot Nibbler" and I got it at PetSmart)

Image
(Called "Nature Ball for Small Pets" also from PetSmart)

Image
(Called "Grreat Choice Hamster & Gerbil Sticks" from PetSmart)

You can also buy Applewood sticks for them. Cha Cha loves those.

I was coming home from school and my mum (we were in the car!) spotted a ferplast hamster cage outside someone's house, I didnt see it and then we went back and had a look, the guy said it was free-afew things missing but I have them because of Trixie. So basically, we have taken it home and it needs a good wash out(might be a while because theirs a hosepipe ban!), but its either for Trixie or if my sister has to seperate her robo's! Not bad a cage cause it was free!

Skittles!! wrote:im having a problem, Sprite has been chewing on her cage and its really annoying, i have a ton of things for her to do and i let her out in her ball almost every night and she keeps on chewing and its in my room so i cant sleep, and i dont have anywhere to move her. im planning on moving her to my brothers old room once we get his bedroom in the basement but thats still along time away

I have that same problem. Did you get your hamster from Pets at Home? Hamsters from them, like other pet stores, get their hamsters from breeding farms where they breed over active hamsters. He/she more than likely learnt the behavior from mum and because the hamster is so energetic he/she needs lots to do so it can cope. I tried toys for mine, chews and everything but nothing worked. A wheel helped but she doesn't fit in it so it's back to the bars :(
Sorry for my slow response time on RP's. My new job steals ALL my time. :(

It's not always because they learn from a baby. Bar chewing is a stereotypical behaviour meaning it is a behaviour shown when Somethings not right. Their are many causes of it. Thats the reason for my hamster. It can be a sighn of stress, bordem, illness, exercise needed, diet being to high in energy, learned behavior, habnit and mental illness.

It's a real pain :/

So does that mean Trixie's unhappy/stressed/ill/mental illness/bordem/excercise needed/diet being too high in energy/somethings wrong with her?! (/ Means or!)

No, that's just a common causes if it's a stereotypical behavior. She could just be wearing her teeth down or trying to escape or something else. So many causes. XD
