Theoden wrote:Where now are the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the harp on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

Pippin unconsciously stepped forward, peering over Merry's shoulder at the newfound company. He shyly reached out and poked the cheek of the man, ignoring Merry's glare and slap on the hand. When the first touch didn't get a response, he poked again, a little harder. This time he got a reaction. The human coughed weakly and stirred, feebly trying to move.

"Wha? Mmmph...'s going on?" he mumbled, moving his hands under the remains of a mantelpiece where they were caught. Merry shoved Pip away and placed a tentative hand on the injured man's badly gashed shoulder.

"Mister? Are you alright? Can you hear me?" Merry asked, worry in his tone. The stranger opened his eyes slowly, blinking against the light streaming in from the medium-sized opening in the wall. His eyes were a brilliant green, startling the hobbits at first by the brilliance of the hue and the speed at which he came to and became aware of the situation.

"Great Eru! Where am I? What happened?" he groaned, surprise and alarm clearly the dominant emotions in his mind. He struggled to free himself from the wreckage more desperately now, evidently scared out of his wits.

"Relax, we're not going to hurt you." Pippin piped up, earning another look from Merry, but one that was less threatening.

"You must be hobbits. Pray tell me who you are, then please help me. I am Ladhras, son of Ladben." the man said more kindly, relaxing a bit just as he had been advised. The two hobbits smiled, looking down at Ladhras from their towering heights of just under four feet each.

"Well, my name is Meriadoc Brandybuck, and this is my cousin, Peregrin Took." Merry declared, speaking for the two of them. "And we would be glad to help. But one question. Do you know what did this? Bree is destroyed! And everyone is gone!"

I don't know. If they are, they aren't commenting.

You should post the link on the LotR thread again. Maybe they didn't see it.

Ladhras looked sharply at Merry, his eyes showing signs of both fear and anger. "I know not what they were. But I do know that they were massive, ugly creatures that looked like twisted men. They wore black, tattered cloaks over armor of red, black, and white. And their faces, which were hidden from me, had two glowing yellow eyes in the shadows of their hoods. I have never seen the likes of their weapons, which were terrible and fell. The blades were like large, curved swords, but with serrated edges and handles of stone. Runes were inscribed, but those I only saw as one passed me, which became lodged in the wall behind me when it was thrown at my head. And despite these sturdy accommodations, the wall crumbled like burning paper when the the blade became wedged in it. I blacked out then, because it seems that I was standing close enough to get crushed." He paused, taking a deep breath and reaching out to the hobbits.

Pippin reached out and took Ladhras's hands, pulling gently as Merry cleared away some of the rubble. The young man winced as the hobbits worked around him, trying to extricate his body from the mess. Pip started pulling a bit too hard, and Merry didn't move a rock the right way, and Ladhras cried out in pain.

"Ai! My leg! Please...be careful. I don't think it's broken, but it hurts something terrible." he moaned, trying to keep a straight face and not show weakness. The two hobbits nodded, slightly alarmed, and moved a little more carefully. After a few minutes, they had cleared as much as they could, shoving chunks of wall and roof to the side and lifting the pieces that were too big to be pushed.

"Mister, we're too tired to move any more. Do you think you could manage it if we pulled you out now? We could deal with everything else tomorrow." Merry asked, plopping down on the floor and wiping his sweaty forehead with his sleeve. Ladhras grimaced, but nodded. He braced himself for the pain, offering his arms to the hobbits. They looked at eachother, then grabbed and pulled steadily at the same time. The man was heavy, and was in a difficult position to get out of. He moaned in agony, but didn't resist, and the hobbits soon had him out, huffing and puffing on the dusty wood floor.

"Well, I guess it's nearly supper time. It's getting dark fast." Pippin piped up, ever hungry. Ladhras smiled, despite his condition, and using only his arms, hauled himself onto the bed that had luckily survived the destruction. Merry gave Pippin a snarky look, but agreed.

"We'll be back in a minute, Ladhras. We're gonna get you somethin' to eat. Can't let you starve like this." Merry decided, turning for the door. Pip set his hand on Merry's shoulder and followed him out, giving the man one last look before disappearing into the hallway.
