Emmet had awoken late, but it wasn't as though his Mentor cared. The former Victor of District One insisted that Emmet was already more well groomed than those stations could ever provide. When Emmett brought up a need to meet the other tributes, his mentor laughed. As a Career, Emmett should already know his set pack. Annoyed with the entire exchange, Emmet ended on the note that he should want to make a good impression on his definite teammates. And he could only hope his District partner wasn't taking any flak because he had failed to show.
The golden blond boy arrived in the training area in the midst of all the action. The trainers had long since explained what was going on, but since he had missed it, he would have to find out on his own. His mentor was correct though, he did know most of these tasks by heart, though he was sure he could use some improvement some. His first order of business was to get to the first aid. Basic knowledge of how to use a bandage would not be enough and of this he was certain. He needed to know how to set a broken bone and make a splint and such. He saw that he was not alone at the station, a girl with brown hair and brown eyes was there also, though he couldn't recall her name or district from the reaping.
"Good morning," he said politely, getting a hold of the equipment. Then he realized hat he had never checked the time so it may be afternoon.

"Good morning," came a cheery reply from a tall, blue-eyed, golden-haired boy. Sara glanced up at him as though she had better things to think about.
"It's a bit late for that, don't you think?"
Sara gave the boy a sarcastic smile.

Sara looked back down at the bandages on the dummy's arm. They didn't look neat nor correct, just like her last three tries. Sara let out a frustrated, angry sigh and ripped them off. The trainer gave Sara a warning look. Sara looked in turn at the District One boy desperately.
"I'm no good at this, and Mr. Hook over," Sara jerked her thumb at the trainer, "isn't any help. Could you help me? It might keep Hook from having to perform CPR on my dead body. You know?"
Sara tugged at her white shirt, flattening it out. If they had allowed the tributes to wear dresses, Sara would be there in a sundress. Instead, she had to settle on a white shirt with an over-large black "8" on the front and some black skinny jeans. She never understood those jeans, nor why they still existed. They weren't fashionable in Panam. Maybe in older times, but not after years of evolution.
"Oh, wait, I know what I need!" Sara exclaimed, not caring if the boy had made a reply. If he had said anything other than "Good morning," Sara had not caught it. "I need tape! Oh, wait, what was your name?"

I have a bit of WB.
Ashley could tell Ari was avoiding an answer, and when she picked up the weight, Ashley actually scampered back several feet as if she was worried it was going to be thrown at her. Of course, it wasn't, so when it hit the ground, she had already walked back to where she had been previously. Ari picked up the weight, smiled at the trainer, then replied to her question. Her reply was distant, and Ashley knew the question had been a stupid one to ask. Rubbing her hands nervously on her fitting pants, she danced back and forth for a minute. She never tried to carry on conversations, and she wasn't rude enough to walk out on people. She stood there for another moment or two before she finally figured out what to say. "Have you been to the knot-tying station?" The trainer was giving the girls some nasty looks, and she would gladly get out of there and to a more friendly booth. She hated conflict, and this was definitely conflict, to a degree. Still bouncing up and down, she subtly started moving toward the knot station, waiting for Ari's reply.
^^ Did you see this, Kobayashi_Ari?

Emmet gave a small smile. "Yeah, I guess it is sort of late. I'm pretty bad with names too...worse with Districts though. My name's Riley and I'm from District One." He watched her tear off the messy bandages and stifled a laugh. The trainer looked unamused, and he wondered how long she had been working at this. Healing just doesn't come naturally to everyone. He knew that from experience, but with some prior training...
"Sure I'll help you out," he said, taking some fresh bandages out. He worked pretty slow, which wouldn't work very well in the heat of battle or on the run. However, just to bind up the wound and stop the bleeding he thought he ought to do fine. "You know, if you show me how you do your bandaging I might be able to show you what's wrong," he said, closing the last knot. "Finished."
He glanced at the trainer who gave a slight nod.

"Have you been to the knot-tying station?"
Ari could tell that Ashley was eyeing the trainer uncertainly, so Ari let out a little laugh.
"No, but I'd definently like to go."
Ari turned on her heel and walked toward the knot-tying station without checking to see if Ashley had followed. When she arrived at the knot-tying station, the trainer gave Ari a friendly smile. Ari turned around to find Ashley.
"Yup! This station will work!" Ari called out, turning and sitting down to the trainer's left. He was making some intensely complicated knot that made Ari's fingers feel tired even though she wasn't the one making the knot.
"I don't need to know that yet, do I?" Ari asked the trainer nervously. He laughed and shook his head, finishing the knot off. He grabbed another thing of rope and waited for Ashley to get there.

"Yeah, I guess it is sort of late. I'm pretty bad with names too...worse with Diatricts though. My name's Riley and I'm from District One." Then, "Sure I'll help you out. Sara smiled at Emmet, picking up a fresh wad of bandages.
"I don't know whats wrong; I'm doing it exactly as he said!"
Sara put the starting bandage on the dummy's "palm", wrapping it around it's wrist. The end dangled from the palm. Sara continued to wrap the bandages around the "wrist", stopping at it's elbow.
"You see how bad it looks? It's supposed to look like that!" Sara pointed at the trainer's dummy, which had perfectly neat and pretty bandages. It was wrapped just as long as Sara's had been, just... neater. Sara sighed.
"I don't know what's wrong! I really don't! Do you have any suggestions, Emmet?"
Sara looked up at him, hoping he had an answer. If not, Sara wouldn't last too long on the arena. The trainer said that she would have to do that one-handed, on herself... if Sara couldn't wrap the bandages properly then, how would she wrap them properly then? It was too much for Sara's miniscule brain. She shook her head to clear herself of such bad thoughts. Time to get focused and prepared for the Games.

I know, right! It's
Contagious!
Ari laughed, replied, and then preceded to turn on her heel and walk to the knot station. Ashley scampered after her and plopped down on the trainer's left, offering a shy smile. She grabbed a rope from the pile and looked at the trainer expectantly. "I can't really tie knots..." A lie. She could tie knots with ease, but she was trying to guard her talents. She wanted to impress the gamekeepers, not the other tributes. She didn't want to be a target.
The trainer showed them a basic knot, and Ashley imitated it. She knew it vaguely, not by name, and could do it. She made it look as if her fingers slipped and quivered, though. What a fake I am becoming! She thought, frowning to herself as she dropped the rope onto the table, a messy knot tied on one end. She glanced at Ari. "Well, that proves my earlier statement..." She muttered quietly, her finger tracing the rope's curves. The despair was tightening its hold, forcing her heart slowly into her throat. She didn't want to go to the games, the slaughterhouse. It was so brutal. Her fist closed around the knot and she lifted it it to her face. This rope was much stiffer than her rope at home, her frayed tatters of rope. I'm dead. The thought sprung at her from nowhere, and caused her to actually jump a little. Then she winced, embarrassed and hating herself for what she thought.

Emmet watched Sara carefully as she bandaged the dummy's arm. He gave a good-natured smile but did not laugh at Sara's complaints about doing it right. After all, this was truly a life or death situation. If she got wounded on the arm in the woods, proper bandaging might stop her from bleeding out or getting an infection. So instead, he stroked his chin which was hairless right now and began unwrapping the dummy's arm. He unrolled some new bandages, sort of pitying the waste.
"Your problems arn't so big," Emmet told her. "Try going more slowly and making sure each layer slightly overlaps the next," he said as he slowly went through the process. "At this part here, you want to hold the part of the bandage that's in the palm to make sure it's not sliding down as you wrap. And you definitely want to hold your finger here while you tie the knot, so it doesn't unravel like your last one did toward the end."
He pauses. Maybe that was more than he thought it was..."Can you try it again?"

After Sara's failed attempt to wrap the bandages, Emmet unwrapped them and got a fresh wad of bandages.
"Your problems arn't so big. Try going more slowly and making sure each layer slightly overlaps the next. At this part here, you want to hold the part of the bandage that's in the palm to make sure it's not sliding down as you wrap. And you definitely want to hold your finger here while you tie the knot, so it doesn't unravel like your last one did toward the end."
Several times, Sara chirped an "Okay," between his sentences. When she waited for him to say something more, and he didn't, Sara replied, "All righty!" and grabbed a new roll of bandgaes.
Sara did as Emmet said. When she placed the beginning of the bandages on the dummy's palm, Sara held it down and used her other arm to move in a wheel-like fashion around the dummy's arm. Sara made sure to slightly overlap the bandages each time, and it was lookin neat and tidier. When it was time to tie the knot, Sara held her finger where Emmet had told her so that she could tie the knot at the end. Sara sat back on her heels, admiring her work, and how Emmet's short advice had done better than the trainer's. But something still looked off...
Sara tilted her head to the side, trying to catch what the problem. She'd done everything just as Emmet said. It was all neat, it was all perfect, it was...
...loose. Everything. Loose. She had never kept the bandages on the dummy without ripping them off, and only thought that the looseness was because she was terrible. But now Sara noticed it.
"Hey," Sara called to the trainer. "Are you sure you didn't leave out a step when you told me how to do it?"
"Yeah," Mr. Hook called back. "I'm the expert, right?"
Sara shook her head. "Emmet, you're from District one, right? Shouldn't you be over there with the careers? Oh, no, don't go over there yet, I still need you over here. Haha, I just ramble a lot, don't I? Oh, do you see the problem, because I think I see it. I need to know that I'm right."
Sara eyed the beginning of the bandage. Was the problem there? Was it the knot she tied at the end? Was that wrong?
Or was it her? Would she die in the Games because she couldn't wrap a bandage tight enough?

Heheh, no writer's block this time!
~Ari Kobayashi~
"Well, that proves my earlier statement..."
Ari glanced up at Ashley as though she had just materialized in front of everyone. In Ari's point of view, everyone had just materialized in front of her, as she was so wrapped up in her knot, that the whole world disappeared in front of her. Only when Ashley spoke had Ari been dragged from her "slumber".
"What was that? Oh..."
Ari glanced down at Ashley's knot. It was loose and coming undone. Looking down at her own knot, Ari saw that her "perfect" knot was no better.
"This material is so thick it doesn't bed well." Ari turned to the trainer. "Do you have anything that we might use during the Games? I doubt we'll have string, or whatever this is, in our backpacks, if we can get hold on one."
The trainer shook his head.
Ari gave the pitiful knot one more tug and dropped the spider web on the floor. Grabbing a set of directions and a new string, Ari glanced at what she was about to make. She didn't bother to look at the difficulty, nor the name, but only at the finished product.
"That's not too hard," Ari muttered.
She came to regret those words.
In order to make this knot, Ari had to have something to tie the string on. Ari found a set of tight strings made just for the occasion. It was a large black box with many red strings pulled tight in neat rows on the top. Ari grabbed it and pulled it over to where she was sitting.
"1. Make a turn around the object and bring the working end back over the standing part," Ari read out loud. Ari decided to look at the picture. That made more sense to her, so Ari put the white string under the red and pulled it upward, making two even ends joined beneath the red string. Then she crossed the strings.
"2. Continue around behind the object." Ari looked at the picture again. The picture making more sense as always, Ari put one of the ends under the red string and pulled it around to the other side.
"3. Pass the working end over the standing part and then under the riding turn and standing part, forming an overhand knot under a riding turn. What?" Staring at the picture for a long time, Ari realized that she had to take the longer end of string and bring it underneath the red string like she had done with the first end, but with this one she had to tuck it under the other end.
"4. Be sure the ends emerge between the two turns as shown. Pull firmly on the ends to tighten. That's simple." Ari simply pulled on the strings. They held.
"If I can do that, what can't I do?"
She regretted those, too.
You see, that particular knot was easy. The fact that she could finish it perfectly on her first try gave her overconfidence. Then she started to say "That's not too hard," with every knot.
After multiple successful knots, Ari finally landed on the knot that would make her frustrated and a side of her that she had never seen would come out.
It all started with, "That's not too hard!"
