A lot of dogs are prone to pancreitous they dont know why dogs get them but its an inflamation of the pancreas and every time your dog has an attack it is a 500 dollar over night vet visit and they have to get their stomache pumped so its not fun for either human or dog. Also if you want to give your meat make sure that it is at least partially cooked ESPECIALLY chicken as a treat we put chicken yams blueberrys carrots and chicken stock in a pot or a crockpot and cook it for a few hours then if you pour it over dry dog food its a healthy tasty treat for them. I know all of this by experiance so trust me human food is a BIG no no because in the long run its expencive and unhealth also dont give your dog raw liver!! you have to soak it in milk to extract the poison if you wont eat it i would suggest not giving it to your dog... Then cook it that way there is no possible way to hurt your dog.

Actually, raw liver is an important part of a diet for dogs that are on a complete raw diet. My own dog is one of those and animal organs must be fed for the diet to be properly balanced, and liver should make up 50% of all organs you feed to your dog.

Feeding raw liver is not a good idea however if your dog is not already on a raw diet because it could potentially give them loose stools 3:

Many dogs are allergic to things just like humans so be aware :)

I'm glad you got switched.

I just want to point something out:
Vets are paid to recommend or sell certain dog foods at their practices. It is likely that they are pretty crappy compared to natural foods you can buy at Petco (vets usually sell Iams, Royal Canin, etc... neither are that great). They most likely know very little about nutrition (and are NOT certified to make dog foods... Science Diet or any other "made by vets" is not vet-made). There are pet nutritionists that are certified, and they are the ones that make the food.

I suppose it depends on the "human food" though. My father feeds our dogs banana slices, apple slices, and some other healthy fruits at least once or twice a day.
Like I said, our dogs live healthy lives and they live an average life span. So Science Diet and the snacks they are sometimes given actually does benefit to their health.

As for Beneful, it doesn't look to good, but if your dogs thrive and are healthy on it, then it's okay, as long as you ensure they are healthy. That should be the rule for any dog food, as long as the dogs are healthy, and appear to be as active and happy as any other dog.

Beneful has no legitimate (IMO) protein source. Chicken is like... 16th, then you have byproducts up top and egg protein stuff smaches in there. Beneful is one of, if not the, worst brand name pet food you can give your dog.

I read somewhere where dogs aren't supposed to eat apple skin (and seeds). Potato skin as well, if I remember correctly.

We don't feed them seeds, and the skin is usually cut off. c:

I found some positive reviews for SD on http://petcareeducation.com/dogfoodrevi ... -dog-food/

My purebread lab is on Perscription diet J/D to help her arthretis in her knee and it surpassed my expectations immensly. Through this brand I had the opportunity to avoid surgery that would only help her become 80% anyways. Thank You Hills for developing such a wonderfull food and for giving my pal a chance to be herself again!!!!

Corn actually has great proteins for muscle and tissue growth and cause less food born allergies then most grains, but ya whatever you say.

Corn is a nutritious food and if cooked and ground it is highly digestible for dogs. It actually produces fewer allergies than lamb and beef. Too many people parrot things they have heard or read without checking into the science of the “offending” item. Cellulose is a food grade product used in RX dog foods, just as it is used in ice cream, yogurt and many other people foods we eat regularly.

Science Diet Ideal Balance does not have by-products listed in the ingredients.

I’m ready to collect the 10 bags you will buy me!

My dog loves this food and I do notice a difference since I switched. To each their own!

I find it interesting that so many people now a days are so frightened by the word “by-products” All of the by-products used in dog food must be human food grade, sadly because there are some folks who will dip in to a can for themselves on occasion. While I am not necessarily going to dip in to the lower grade portions of the chicken or cow unless I am on a budget, I assure you these are not harmful, although perhaps a little tougher unless ground up, or maybe not as attractive as a nice Prime Rib Roast. They are still nutritious and delicious for dogs, and in the right proportions, very healthy.

I agree. Not knowing what b-product is in YOUR dogs food is bad, and I wouldn’t eat it! But my dog has been on science diet for 7 years, and he was supposed to die about 3 years ago. He is old and living on! It’s amazing to compare these brands to purina, which kills many dogs a year. It is true that science diet isn’t the BEST, but these days, what is?

If you have a problem or disagree with these quotes, don't take it up with me. I didn't write them.

Oranges aren't good, I'm fairly sure. :/
There are some fruits and vegetables, however, that are goomd you just have to be careful which ones, and do your research.

Fruits and vegetables are not all that important for a dog's diet. They, of course, are not going to hurt your dog (cept for certain fruits like grapes, which should not be fed to dogs), but they are also not necessary for their diet. Unlike meat which is the most important thing for a dog's diet.

If your dog has issues with certain types of food they can get vitamins and even some protine for the dogs... at least this is for my dogs...
