Chapter 8: A night star who was lost in the night
Three quarter moons and a half later. (Three and a half weeks)

Cardinalfeather entered Nightstar’s den in the darkness of the night. Everyone was asleep, including the guard at the entrance. Nightstar woken up at the noise of Cardinalfeather entering her den. “Hello Cardinalfeather, what do you want?” She yawned, stretching as she watched Cardinalfeather come closer to her. Cardinalfeather didn’t say anything, his face was grim as he pounced on top of Nightstar. The black she-cat struggled, she wasn’t made leader for nothing. But Cardinalfeather was broader and larger than his leader. Before she could stop him, he killed all her lives she had left. Nightstar screamed in agony and tried to stop him but she couldn’t...

“It regrets me to tell everyone that Nightstar is dead. I went into her den this morning to talk to her and she was found, laying in a puddle of blood. But, I shall be leader. And Lionfire shall be DarkClan’s deputy and we shall be strong. I am now Cardinalstar, cheer your leader and deputy.” “CARDINALSTAR! LIONFIRE!” Everyone reluctantly cheered. This was not right, Cardinalstar had to go to the Moon River to get his nine lives. But no one wanted to mess with the dangerous leader and deputy. But Moonhunter growled. “No, I will not serve you, Murderer.” Moonhunter hissed. “Then LEAVE AND NEVER RETURN! IF you do, then you shall be killed immediately.” Cardinalstar growled, almost pouncing on top of Moonhunter. Lionfire, Hazelpelt and Sparrowsong, Cardinalstar’s strongest supporters started hissing and striking near Moonhunter. The ginger tabby ran for his life. They chased him all the way to ForestClan border were they stopped and hissed at him, taunting him to cross over the border.

Moonhunter had to go to Sunstar and explain the whole gigantic mess to him. He would understand. Sunstar was deputy when Moonhunter was born and leader when Moonhunter had left after being suspected as Frostpaw’s murderer. But what do you know? He ran into Riverpaw again. “Hey! Traitor, better go back to DarkClan or else!” Riverpaw spat. “Riverpaw, calm down, I’m sure there’s an explanation on why Moonhunter crossed the border.” Pinetail, Riverpaw’s new mentor, calmly meowed. Pinetail was Moonhunter’s littermate, not that Pinetail liked to admit it. “Horrible, awful news. I wished I only would have told a cat sooner. I need to see Sunstar immediately.” Moonhunter replied, glaring at the brown tabby apprentice. Pinetail narrowed his eyes but politely nodded his head. “Of course. Follow me and Riverpaw.” He reluctantly meowed. Moonhunter followed the two cats. He couldn’t have been more happy than when Sunstar let him come into his den to talk about the situation. “I have always been gullible, everyone knew that. I became friends with Darkstar as apprentices when we met at gatherings. But it was more than that. We started meeting outside of gatherings, Darkstar said it was okay. Frostpaw, too. We had fun together, playing games, talking about our clans. But Darkstar, he was always talking about ruling all the clans, becoming deputy and then killing his leader. At first, me and Frostpaw thought he was only joking and playing around. But then we realized he was serious. He had it all planned out, Frostpaw would become ForestClan’s best warrior that she would become deputy and Darkstar would become deputy of MeadowClan. But what about me? Darkstar said nothing about that.Well, Frostpaw realized that it was mouse-brained and wouldn’t do it, stopped coming to Darkstar’s meetings with me. Darkstar got angry enough to kill her. But he made it seem like I did, without me knowing it. I was exiled but Nightstar took me in, they need warriors at the time. Anyways, when Darkstar became deputy of MeadowClan, he had special meetings held in Twolegplace. He allowed me to come. I was angry at him, for killing Frostpaw, but I was scared that he would kill me if I didn’t come. They meet and discuss plans about controlling all four clans. Each deputy was supposed to kill their leader, for the plan to be complete. Meadowstar did not drown. She was murdered by Darkstar. Cardinalfeather was the next to succeed. He killed Nightstar during the night and claimed himself as now Cardinalstar and quickly named a deputy—Lionfire, one of his strongest supporters and drove me out after I protested.” Moonhunter sighed. “If I come back, I’m crowfood.” Sunstar said nothing for a moment, his eyes fixed on the former ForestClanner. Finally, he sighed. “What can I do? You were mouse-brained, on coming to those meetings when it isn’t allowed. Yet I do not blame you, being afraid of Darkstar. That cat is bad news. I-I guess you may join ForestClan again but I’ll have to keep you under strict guard.” Sunstar sighed. Moonhunter nodded. He understood. At least, he sort of did.

“Bearpaw, don’t let your guard down, Rosepaw could have damaged your belly. Neverpaw, great job! You had Royalriver down in a jiffy, keep up the good work!” Otterstar called out, watching the clan’s three apprentices as they trained under the Ancient Oak tree, a large oak near a river. The apprentices, Rosepaw, Bearpaw and Neverpaw, were doing an assessment on their fighting on land. LakeClanners were deadly in water but Otterstar wanted his cats to be able to fight on land as well. He was so proud of his clan apprentices. Especially Neverpaw, who was his apprentice. She was much more quieter and shy than Cliffpaw had been, but she was still a loyal and fierce LakeClanner when she needed to be. Otterstar couldn’t believe that the sleek black-and-white apprentice was the same cat he had seen an one moon ago, a skinny, frightened young rouge, abandoned by her parents. Neverpaw was now very close to her warriorship than the two others, who were doing pretty decent for themselves. Rosepaw and Bearpaw had been both kittypets, who had grown up next to each other. Rosepaw was absolutely scared of the water. She wouldn’t dare jump in even if it cost her life. Rosepaw was an excellent hunter, her only fault was her fear of water, earning her the name ‘drypaw.’ Beearpaw didn’t mind water, but hadn’t quite learned how to ‘glide’ through the water without making a splash. Pebblefur and Mousetail, the mentors of Rosepaw and Bearpaw, watched their apprentices amusedly and shouted out advice during the assessment. Royalriver was only in the assessment because the once glaurious kittypet still needed some battle training. “Cliffpaw would have loved to make fun of Royalriver.” A voice whispered into Otterstar’s ears. The brown tabby looked back to see Leaftail, smiling at him. “Leafpaw---I mean Leaftail----, I’m sure that she would have. She would have like Neverpaw, maybe even best friends with her.” Otterstar stuttered, forgetting that Leafpaw was now Leaftail. “What are you doing around here?” Otterstar questioned, raising an eyebrow. “Collecting some herbs, you goof!” Leaftail giggled. “Tansyfur doesn’t know where all the herbs are in LakeClan so I’m collecting some of the harder to find herbs for her.” Leafpaw replied. Otterstar shook his head. The apprentices were heading out now, their assessment was done. Royalriver sheepishly raced over to the camp with the other three apprentices. His long blue fur full of burrs and twigs, Otterstar talked with Pebblefur and Mousetail before they left for camp as well. Otterstar chuckled as the brother and sister disappeared from sight, their tails twining together. Pebblefur was a different cat from the soft, uncertain kittypet that she was to the strong, loyal LakeClan. Mousetail was different as well, a sleek and well-fed LakeClan warrior who no longer stuttered his words. In fact, Otterstar believed that every cat had changed, including himself. The silence reminded Otterstar that only Leaftail and Otterstar were left by the Ancient Oak. Leaftail hummed as she picked her marigold. She thought about the recent nights she and Whitestorm had gone out together, alone. They conspired with each other, coming up with silly plans to ruin Darkstar. She hated to admit it, but she was falling in love with Whitestorm. “Leaftail, mind if I help you?” Otterstar asked, padding over to see what Leaftail was doing. “Sure. Don’t pick those orange ones, or they’ll infect wounds even more. Only the yellow flowers.” Leaftail instructed. Otterstar chuckled. She was just like Moonfeather. “I remember when you were born, I was only deputy at the time, “ Otterstar softly meowed. “You, curled up between your sister Cliffpaw and Lionpaw. The only one to get your father Bumblestripe’s brown tabby pelt. Your siblings of course inherited your mother Stawberry’s red tabby pelt. I remember your naming. Moonfeather picked the name out. Stawberry requested it. It was her last request before she died. She picked out Cliffpaw’s and Lionpaw’s names. But she wanted Moonfeather to pick yours. So, Moonfeather named you after Leafpool, a medicine cat and one of Firestar’s daughters. She became a warrior, you know... after having three kits with a WindClan warrior...” Leaftail’s heart nearly stopped. She always knew that she was named after Leafpool, but she forgotten about what happened to the former medicine cat warrior. That she became a warrior after not allowed her medicine cat rank. And then Jayfeather, her son, became the medicine cat. Would that be her same destiny?

Leaf stalked the rabbit. She hesitated, not sure how to really hunt it. Finally, she started chasing after it, quietly. But the rabbit scented her and started to run away across the field. Leaf tried to chase after the rabbit and capture it, but she was feeling tired. Finally, she yawned and slowed to a walk. She knew that Ashpaw, her mentor, would be angry at her. Ashpaw was a tough-love she-cat, who loved Leaf like a second-mother. However, as Leaf being Fallenway’s daughter, he would throw a fit if she wasn’t trained right. So, Ashpaw was more harder on her, than she would have been. But Leaf was not used to, even after a moon, being awake during the daytime. In the city, the twolegplace, her clan would have been sleeping by this time, only guards would be awake at this time. It was too dangerous to be awake and hunting in the twolegplace. Mean twolegs were about in the alleys and in the park, where they tried to sometimes act nice to make clan cats into kittypets. RougeClan had lost a lot of cats that way. It didn’t help that the fellowship had been having a lot of late night meetings. Bonding together mainly. To be strong when it counted.“Taking a break? During your hunting?” Growled a voice. Foxpelt stepped out of the tall grass, carrying a mouse in his jaws. A small one at that, not a big juicy mouse found usually in ForestClan and sometimes DarkClan territories. “StormClan doesn’t need a lazy apprentice.” Growled Rockpaw, Leaf’s brother, who emerged behind Foxpelt, with a small rabbit. Oh, right. Rockpaw’s is Foxpelt’s mentor. Leaf though as she glared at her brother with hatred. Her brother was a lot like her father, Fallenway. Rough, always in a bad mood, seeing she-cats as weaker than toms. Just like her father. Except Leaf had inherited his dark tabby pelt and built while Rockpaw inherited their mother Mossball’s dark grey pelt except he had light grey tabby stripes while their mother didn’t. Something he inherited by their father. Normally the happy, cheerful StormClan Leaf would be joking around saying she was just taking a short break after trying to hunt down a rabbit but Leaf regressed into the timid, nervous RougeClan Leaf. She hadn’t been like that since the dream where the fellowship all met the first time together. “I’m just very tired.” She yawned. “You had a meeting with the ‘fellowship’ again, didn’t you?” Rockpaw hissed. Leaf had told her brother earlier, but he wasn’t convinced by it. “Not last night. Besides, it’s not any business of yours.” She hissed. “You know what Leaf? Go tell Leaftail that I quit the mouse-brained fellowship. I don’t need it in my life. I don’t care about it. I won’t tell Darkstar about it, it’s just feeble attempt to stop him, it won’t work. But I will tell him about you slacking off.” Leaf pressed her ears against her skull, dismissively letting Foxpelt take her back to camp along with Rockpaw trailing behind, snickering. Leaf could not even give him a glare. What had happened? What caused her to turn back to her old self? It was Foxpelt, that’s what. Leaf was scared out of her fur of him. She just didn’t like him. With his cocky, intimidating appearance and gesture. His cruel voice of sarcasm.

“Darkstar, I’m here with Leaf, daughter of Fallenway. She just caused trouble, sir. She took a ‘break’ after supposedly “trying” to get a rabbit, for our clan. She’s been sneaking out, I saw done it before.” Foxpelt gave his report, glancing at Leaf every once in a while in the report. The Leader’s den was dark, even with Leaf’s brilliant night-vision, she could only make out Foxpelt’s and Darkstar’s eyes, their black pelts blended well into the darkness. Leaf always thought that they were more like DarkClanners than MeadowClanners, who she heard usually own dark pelts that blended well in their territory. For DarkClan, like ShadowClan, did a lot of their activity during the night. Darkstar stared at Leaf a long time, his orange eyes of a fiery cruelness seemed to look through her. Into her past, her friends and family, her likes and dislikes, her strengths and weaknesses. Her personality. Finally, Darkstar spoke. “What were you doing, sneaking off into the night?” His voice was calm, as if she had only done a minor offensive. “I-I went to spppy on-on ForestClan.” Leaf stuttered, nervously glancing away. “Oh, really?” Darkstar said in a charming, interested tone of voice. Leaf was taken away, usually what came out of the black cat’s mouth was sarcasm. “I didn’t find anything interesting except...some ForestClan warriors bickering. I’m sure it will be easy to take, take over ForestClan. They can’t even find a place to hunt for a nut’s sake!” Leaf smiled, beaming up at Darkstar. “Oh, I see. Well next time don’t spy unless I tell you.” Darkstar seemed pleased with Leaf. “Now, why don’t you grab something to eat while I talk with Foxpelt?” He purred, placing his tail on Leaf with respect in his eyes. “Uh, sure!” Leaf murmured as she dashed out of the leader’s den, over to where Dawnpelt and Whitestorm were sharing a large rabbit. Even though they were now warriors, Leaf still hanged out with the two. “We better make sure the next Fellowship meeting doesn’t go too long, I almost got in trouble for sleeping during my hunting. That was bad.” Leaf whispered to Dawnpelt and Whitestorm. “Foxpelt turned you in, didn’t he?” Dawnpelt quietly asked. Leaf nodded his head. “With my disgusting brother trailing behind. Guess what he said? He said that he quit the Fellowship!” Leaf added outrageously. Dawnpelt sighed. “He’s changed. I have no idea how he could be picked for the prophecy, he’s not like he used to be...” Dawnpelt whispered, tears coming down her cheeks. “There, there, Dawnpelt, it’ll be alright.” Whitestorm placed his tail on Dawnpelt’s shoulder. “Old Foxkit HAS to still be in there. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been picked by StarClan.” Dawnpelt took another bite of the rabbit and gulped it down. “I guess so, but whether or not old Foxpelt emerges, is the question.”

Foxpelt listened carefully to Darkstar as Darkstar gave him instructions. “-----Cardinalstar has gained control of DarkClan. Raventail is so close to his goal and Bluestorm still trying to lay out a plan to get Sunstar. I need you to perhaps cause some trouble in ForestClan, perhaps try to kill mousebrained Moonhunter and Sunstar at the same time. I know you can do it, my apprentice.” Darkstar’s eyes glowed evilly. “Of course, mentor.” Foxpelt replied, his fox-like eyes looking at the entrance while dipping his head in respect for Darkstar. The young warrior started to leave when Darkstar interrupted him. “Oh, and Foxpelt?” Darkstar purred, smiling at the black warrior, very much like himself.“Yes, Darkstar?” Foxpelt looked back at his leader with questioning yellow eyes. “Keep two eyes on that Leaf. She’s lying alright. Even feeble attempts from StarClan can turn into powerful ones.” Darkstar wasn’t smiling at him anymore, instead, his eyes were a glow in fiery hatred. For the clan the governed and watched over the clans.
