Wolfstar was a very confident cat. One of the reasons Smokestar had chosen her, back as Wolfstorm as leader was because she wasn’t afraid to speak in front of other cats. Yet now, as the only surviving leader, she was downright embarrassed. She was standing on a frozen over stream in the middle of the snow, her sister Blackbolt and apprentice Featherpaw beside her. Two other cats from Wolfstar’s Clan, StormClan sat nearer but not quite next to Wolfstorm. These were Firepaw, looking at Featherpaw and then Wolfstar with hungry eyes, Fallenbird looking downright terrified.
StormClan’s biggest rivalling Clan, SprayClan, sat as far away as they could from the StormClan cats. Their medicine cat, Mintheart, was shifting from paw to paw, eager to start looking for any surviving herbs, not sitting around listening to another Clan’s leader. Watersong, a grey she-cat, was sitting with her heavily pregnant sister, Riverflower. Their brother Reedclaw planted himself as close as he could to them, fearing the StormClan cats would attack them. A light cream tom called Sandheart growled menacingly, to help his best friend out.
IceClan came next, their few cats looking the best in leafbare. Bearclaw and Raintail sat to attention, Frostpaw, practically invisible, trying- but failing- to do the same, more engrossed in the snow at his paws.
Leafwhisker and Tornleaf of WoodClan were next in the crowd of cats. The two were very gently comforting a mad elder called Wildbush, who had gone even crazier than usual. “PetalClan is angry! Raving! Furious!” He moaned, rolling around on the floor laughing. “Yay! We’re at home and I’m eating lots and lots of mice…”
There were no cats from FireClan looking worried at how light it was. They should be here, Wolfstar thought sadly, missing StormClan’s closest allies.
She spoke up. “Cats of…almost all the Clans! I know it’s disappointing that less of your Clan has been able to arrive. FireClan none at all.” All the cats bowed their heads, expecting the worst. “But,” Wolfstar continued. “We must stay strong! For the shortest period of time possible…” she thought up a plan desperately. “We must work together until we can find new territories!” Even Wildbush stopped yowling. All eyes were on her. “Survival!” Wolfstar said randomly. “If any cat does not agree, speak out now.”
“Well said, Smokestar!” Burst out Wildbush. “This is going to be fuuun…”
“We’ve always been enemies!” Said Reedclaw. “I don’t trust anyone but my own Clanmates.”
“Me too!” Sandheart growled.
“Your choice,” Wolfstar shrugged. “Anyone else?” No cat spoke up.
“Then it’s settled. As the only Clan leader in the vicinity, I propose we all stick together for a quarter moon. Tonight, we’ll find shelter. How many cats are there here?”
“Sixteen.” Mintheart answered. “Four for each direction, perhaps?”
“Right…” muttered Wolfstar. “I’ll go with Firepaw, and if I may, Frostpaw and Leafwhisker.” Firepaw practically ran up to Wolfstar. Leafwhisker didn’t argue either.
“Frostpaw? Do you want to go with them?” asked Bearclaw.
“OK...” Frostpaw said doubtfully, getting up.
“We’ll travel west.” Wolfstar continued. “Blackbolt, Wildbush, Tornleaf and Raintail, will you go together and look at the north?”
“Of course.” Blackbolt mewed stiffly.
“That’s settled then.” Tornleaf grunted, shoving his tail over Wildbush’s mouth. Raintail trotted over.
“Next patrol, east. How does Featherpaw, Bearclaw, Fallenbird and Sandheart sound?”
“Fine.” Sandheart and Bearclaw said in union. Sandheart looked livid though.
“Of course!” trilled Featherpaw, going over to Fallenbird in great bounds.
“And last of all, the remaining SprayClan cats. Check the south. Everyone OK with this?”
The cats got into their assigned patrols edgily.
“Move out!” yowled Wolfstar.
