Yes, if you take it out of it's natural habitat, it will not be happy. Or tame.

Did you call fish and game to inquire about the law, or do you say it's legal just because other people are catching animals without permits? A lot of people are unaware of laws regarding native species. A biology/physics teacher at one of the nearby high schools caught an endangered species of rodent and decided to keep it(he didn't know it was endangered, and did not know about laws regarding keeping wild animals). I called fish and game after someone mentioned it to me, which resulted in the animal being confiscated and the teacher being significantly fined(ignorance of the law is never and excuse). I've even had to call fish and game out a few times while hiking when I caught people catching snakes without permits, and they also did not know about any laws(they were also catching a species of snake in a county where it's not legal to catch that species, even if they had a state permit). I also called a few times in regards to individuals trying to obtain money for wild caught native species of my state. In my state, with a permit you can catch them, and keep them, but you can not sell them, which they did not know. I don't know where you live, but if it's anywhere in the United States, then I'm 90% certain what you, your friends, and your biology teacher are doing is illegal.

Regardless of legality, it's still not right nor a good idea in general. Why do you want to catch salamanders? If you think it's fun, then you need to find something else to do, because it is not fun at all for the salamanders. If you want one, then look for a breeder or go to a pet store. There are plenty of nice, hardy salamander species available.

I have pet wild Frogs(2 gray tree frogs) I tryed letting them go, but they wouldn't let go of me. I had them for about a year now. They got way bigger since I had them, because they only need to take a few steps to the food. I hav them workout though. I take them out once a week to have fun and climb.

I live near Crum.

I catch a lot of wild animals(mostly frogs and toads). I keep them for a day and let them go. I don't think it's wrong if you give them the right care, unless it's endangured.
My frogs love their new home, and I love them.

I don't think they sell salamanders where Crum and I live...

I got to handle my cousin's iguana. She was really fun to be around. She likes crawling up your arm and shoulders..she got on my head and I had an iguana hat. XD
I got to feed her some veggies also, it was fun. :}

And they are healthy. They are plump and active at night.

You guys are aware theres nothing wrong with catching wild reptiles, right?
Aside from the whole needing a permit thing, wild caught isn't really a whole lot different than a lot of species in stores. Plenty of reptiles in stores are wildcaught too, so getting something from a store doesn't mean it is always any better. Plenty of species aren't even avaliable as captive breds. And as long as the enclosure is properly set up, the animal will be perfectly happy.

The stores were I live have more exotic pets that are bred in captivity, I know this, because I used to be a handler in one ! C:
Any ways if they are wild caught the store makes sure it is healthy, quarantined, and is used to tank life. You can never count on wild caught critters to last very long.

You forgot all of the outside diseases that can be deadly to the reptiles as well as others, and the diseases that reptiles carry but effect things like cats. Oh, and the aggression issue that comes with - all - wild animals. Oh, don't forget that due to the stress of it all there's a very large chance that the reptile will die. Oh, one last thing, you forgot the parasites that they can pass on to your other reptiles. Other than that, yeah, sure, nothing wrong with it. c:
