What is Minecraft?

My friend's brother plays a game non-stop called Minecraft, and I was wondering what it is, and if it's free, what you do, also if you could play it on your IPod!(Don't ask, I say this MILLIONS of times!]

I've heard you can buy the app from the itunes store, but I haven't played it myself. :P I just play it on my computer.

Edit: Obvious answer, no. Before you posted I made a shelter but it didn't have a top so I think a creeper(I now know what it's called cause I downloaded another app) bashed the wall and killed me while I was looking in my inventory... -_- And it scared me a lot I was acting like a big baby over it! I was like: Oh I might be hungry, you can get hungry in this game... right? Then I heard foot steps and hid in a corner, I opened my inventory for absolutely no reason and all I heard was more moaning and footsteps then all I heard was "UNGH! UNGH!" Then I just closed it and all it said was "You died!" and saw the creeper looking around my little shelter... -_- That was my first time playing it!!!
