tick, tock, tick, tock.
The old, stately grandfather clock counted out our last minute together in merciless regularity. I gazed into her eyes, a swirling mix of rich greens and deep blues, swirling together with flecks of gold. She said that when she was born, God had used up all the gold paint for other eyes, so he just flicked a little on hers. She was forever saying things like that - odd, funny little epigrams that held a world of meaning. When we first met, I thought I could drown in those eyes, and for a moment, I let myself sink beneath the calm waters. I leaned closer to her, my arms wrapping protectively around her. It wasn't a passionate lovers embrace, it was me protecting her, as we'd promised long ago, when we just children and everything was right with the world.
'John? Can we stay together forever?'
''Course, Katie. But what about school?'
'Oh, that doesn't matter! We can run away together.'
'Katie, seriously...'
'O-okay. But promise me you'll always be there for me? Always?'
'I promise.'
'Me too.'
We smiled gap-toothy grins in the semi-darkness.
