Females are more high energy and will certainly keep you entertained. So far males seem to be more calm and cuddly. So, it really depends what you prefer. Some males also smell more from what I've heard as well.
As far as cages go, depends on how much you want to spend. I would suggest Ferret Nation cages, they certainly expensive, but from what I've seen reliable and you can do some awesome things with them.

In almost every book I've read, it specifies that females are more prone to tumors (though unfortunately tumors are pretty common in rats in general) and males get greasy backs. Both of these problems can be reduced by spaying or neutering.
TO ANYONE I ROLEPLAY WITH
I will be away for a week, starting Wednesday 16th of March for personal reasons. Sorry I couldn't inform everyone individually- I hope you understand c:

{I go to PetSmart - do you think rats from there would already be spayed/neutered?}
{And we'll have to see on cages. Thanks for the tip, though ^^}

No, they aren't. And I do believe they only sell the same gender in stores. At least, both places where I lived did, so there wouldn't be much of a reason in fixing them.

Yeah, he got quiet a few cuts on him from his claws too, he wasn't happy when we had to pin him down to cut them :( . He's getting better, he comes out his cage for a waddle around if I'm the only person there as the others are out but any movement and he shoots back in (he can run quiet fast for an ex fat rat lol xD). He will accept food from me and when I make him Coe out for cuddles he will calm down and happily ride and sit on my shoulder for a bit :) so yeah, he's much better now :D oooooo....he doesn't bite anymore :D ( well..unless you stick your fingers in the cage xD))
Sorry for my slow response time on RP's. My new job steals ALL my time. :(

The Petco Rat Manor is a pretty good cage if you can't afford a Critter/Ferret Nation.
Females are smaller, more energetic, and more playful, but they smell less than males. Males are larger, cuddlier, and lazier but they have a faint musky odor to them.
I got my male over ther weekend. I'll hopefully be getting him a buddy soon. He's really huge, but he's super tame and sweet. I named him Amadeus. He's a black agouti dumbo. ~ <3 He loves to sleep in sweatshirt hoods. :) He does have a little bit of an odor to him, but it's not bad. It's not nearly as bad as ferrets.

I am surprised at my two male rats Jacob and Marlo. They are about 7 months old and have not mentally matured. They are completely nuts. They should have calmed down or started to get lazy by now but they don't seem to be. Lol my pets all seem to be odd xD
