The Prisoner & The Lighthouse Keeper

The embers of Eustace's lamp were long dead and cold, but he still held to it as tightly as he could, especially whenever a cloud passed over the full moon overhead. Thankfully, those clouds were few and he was able to see his way through the forest, guided by the the silvery light that filtered through the thickly leafed trees.

Now and again, Eustace would stop and look at the trees, marveling at just how unchanged they appeared. Some seemed the slightest bit larger, the most marked difference being the size of some that had only been saplings when he had been captured. He could still remember being dragged through the brush, a rope tied around his neck like he was a common piece of livestock... then again, he had expected as much. Imperial troops were well known and feared for how brutal their treatment of prisoners was.

It took all he had to not fall into those memories. Five years as their captive, five years that had left him gaunt and pale and scarred, too weak to even carry more than a bare minimum of supplies, and even those were gone now. The shelter he'd been taken to, after Utopian forces liberated the prison, hadn't had much in either room or supplies, and he had been considered well enough to leave. So here he was, wandering the forests towards the only place he even wanted to see. Even if he couldn't stay (for he had heard someone else had taken it over), he just wanted to see his lighthouse one more time.
-------------------------------------------------

Was that... a bell?

Eustace stopped in his tracks, blinking in confusion at the sound. It was the deep, resonating ring of a bell, not too far away either. With renewed vigor, Eustace staggered through the trees until he emerged in the familiar strip of open grass between the treeline and the beach, and directly ahead of him was the old lighthouse, lit and running as it should be. Lit, running, and... ringing. The fog bell, was it really working?

He stumbled towards the lighthouse door, not even fully aware of what he was doing. Though the summer air was warm, he still felt cold; his scars burned and his body ached with pain and hunger. Surely, the new caretaker would take pity on a tired man, would allow him a chance to rest and say goodbye to his home.

He raised the knocker and knocked once, twice, before slumping over, only remaining partially upright by leaning against the outer doorframe, his eyes closed. He heard the door open, followed by a sharp gasp that made him open his eyes. What he saw... he wondered if he had gotten so sick so fast, that he was becoming delirious.

She stood in the doorway, well-dressed and looking healthy as could be, but he could still see the scars on her face and neck. Her eyes were bright, though he could swear he saw tears pooling in them, and he instinctively reached out to touch her cheek, to comfort her, to wipe away the tears before they fell. He felt her hand close over his, and then she pulled him close, holding him as tightly as she could.

"Eustace?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

"Lea..." he breathed, wrapping his arms around her, tears beginning to drip down his own cheeks.
---------------------------------------------------------

At the end of the river
the sundown beams
All the relics of a life long lived
Here weary traveler
rest your wand
Sleep the journey from your eyes.

(Well, there it is, the end of the story :) I wanted to keep it minimal and open to interpretation, I just wanted to end things with a definite 'they find each other again' thing. Thank you to everyone who followed this! I'm hoping to write another story, but I'm trying to find something good to base it on... I've got one strong idea kicking around, but am having trouble figuring out what pets might fit the characters xD)

"Im done."
I used hand motions to give my statement a bit more meaning, though my facial expression gave my thoughts away. He stood there at the doorway, puzzled, no single thought going through his mind- like usual. "Done what? That suit I told you to fix?" Had he not realized how angry and extremely upset I was? Apparently not- again, like usual. He never thought of anyone else but himself.

I rolled my eyes with a freakishly upset expression forming on my face. "You don't know?" He shook his head absentmindedly and gestured for me to continue. "Not even a guess?" He again shook his head. I teared up a little- how could he be this inconsiderate? "Im not done your suit. And I never will be."

He again had that puzzled look on his face. "Why?"
I sighed and couldn't help the tears from streaming down my cheeks, forming my eyes into a red, puffy mess.

"Because. We're done."
With that, I pushed him out of the doorway, trying to prevent sniffles from escaping. I ran as fast as I could, and soon enough I was out of breath and stopped. I turned around because of curiousness, and somewhat of a test to see if he really loved me. No one was behind me. He didn't come running.

Suddenly he walked out, pushing his hair out of his face.
I stared at him- dead serious- in the eyes and said between sniffles,

"Get someone else to take care of you. Im not doing your dirty work anymore."

Not sure whether to be happy that it had a good ending or sad that it ended, but I loved the story the whole way through, commander shapard.

Also, I loved how you switched their positions! It was cool to see Lea answer the knock on the lighthouse door to find Eustache waiting. ^o^

the boy & the butterfly

{ why i loved you, i wasn't sure
but you sure seemed insecure
i loved you then, i love you now
but into my heart, how could i allow
that seemingly perfect butterfly
now i just continue, staring at the sky. . . }

[ part one - the butterfly ]
- sorry its so short -

I stared out of my window absentmindedly, able to view the asphalt streets below and the clouds. I waited for a moment and stuck my head outside, stretching my arm out as well. Just as I'd thought. It began to rain, and it was time. I rushed downstairs, grabbing nothing; not even shoes, and not bothering to close the door behind me. It was beautiful.

A unstressful day was being topped off with something wonderful. It was overwhelmingly amazing. I waited all week for this, and it was worth it. The light peeked out of the clouds, and it was perfect for rain. It glittered all over as I stepped outside, basking in the breathtaking scenery. You couldn't believe how much I loved it.

A small blue butterfly suddenly startled me. It landed on my finger and seemingly looked at me, it's wings fluttering slowly. "Oh hi, little butterfly. What are you doing in such weather?" Of course, the butterfly said nothing- only it's wings made noise. The shined beautifully in the sunlight. It flew off my finger, depressing me a little. I swept around only to find it flying into my house. A smart butterfly, it was. I followed it, prepared to lead it back outside. It finally left on it's own, and my mother burst through the already open door, closing her umbrella only hardly because her arms were full of bags. "Why was the door open?" I sighed, turning to close it as she dropped the bags. Just as I'd closed it, the butterfly flew it.
It fluttered it's wings and landed on my finger again. I examined it very closely, soon enough using a magnifying glass, and noticed something- this was no ordinary butterfly. It's eyes were a effervescent, though calm, violet purple. It was beautiful, and it's wings faded into a brown color at the ends.

It was breathtaking.

I own nothing!

And now the six marry murderesses of the cook county jail in their rendition of the cell block tango!

You know how people have these little habits that get you down. Like Bernie.

Bernie like to chew gum.

No, not chew; POP.

So I came home this one day, and I am really irritated, and I'm looking for a bit of sympathy and there's Bernie layin' on the couch, drinkin' a beer and chewin'.
No, not chewin'.

Poppin'.

So, I said to him, I said, "You pop that gum one more time..."

And he did.

So I took the shotgun off the wall and I fired two warning shots...

...into his head.

I met Ezekiel Young from Salt Lake city about two years ago and he told me he was single and we hit it off right away.

So, we started living together. He'd go to work, he'd come home, I'd fix him a drink, we'd have dinner.

And then I found out.

"Single" he told me? Single, my ass. Not only was he married... oh, no, he had six wives.

One of those Mormons, you know.

So that night, when he came home, I fixed him his drink as usual.

You know, some guys just can't hold their arsenic.

Now, I'm standing in the kitchen, carvin' up the chicken for dinner, minding my own business, and in storms my husband Wilbur in a jealous rage.

"You been screwin' the milkman," He says. He was crazy and he kept screamin',

"You been screwin the milkman."

And then he ran into my knife.

He ran into my knife ten times!

Mit keresek, én itt? Azt mondják,
hogy a híres lakem lefogta a férjemet én meg
lecsaptam a fejét. De nem igaz, én ártatlan
vagyok. Nem tudom miért mondja
Uncle Sam, hogy én tettem. Probáltam
a rendõrségen megmagyarázni de nem értették meg...

"Yeah, but did you do it?"

"UH UH, not guilty!"

My sister, Veronica and I had this double act and my husband, Charlie, traveled around with us.

Now, for the last number in our act, we did 20 acrobatic tricks: one, two, three, four, five... splits, spread eagles, back flips, flip flops, one right after the other.

Well, this one night we were in the hotel Cicero, the three of us, boozin' and havin' a few laughs when we run out of ice.

So I went out to get some. I come back, open the door and there's Veronica and Charlie doing Number Seventeen - The spread eagle.

Well, I was in such a state of shock, I completely blacked out .I can't remember a thing.

It wasn't until later, when I was washing the blood off my hands I even knew they were dead.

I loved Alvin Lipschitz more than I can possibly say. He was a real artistic guy... sensitive... a painter.

But he was always trying to find himself. He'd go out every night looking for himself and on the way he found Ruth, Gladys, Rosemary and Irving.

I guess you can say we broke up because of artistic differences.

He saw himself as alive....

And I saw him dead!

He had it coming!
He had it coming!

He only had himself to blame.

If you'd have been there!
If you'd have seen it!

I betcha you would have done the same!

Pop!
Six!
Squish!
Uh Uh
Cicero
Lipschitz!
