Laila shrugged and opened her jar as the water spirit said. "I would be very grateful if you return the water to the jar," she said with a nod. Laila then examined the boy. "Are you all right. I have just noticed how ill and thin you look. Are you sick?" she asked with curiosity. Sure Laila felt like crap without her water, but not pallid or ill in any way. Maybe a little moody and homesick at the worst. Then again, if she didn't have this water she would of most likely go on a rampage. Laila might look like a small, frail, dark haired girl, but looks could be deceiving. Just one look at the skull collection at the bottom of her lake and one would see what kind of cold blooded killer she was. In all her life has never spared one life and no man to survive her claws, talons, or fangs to tell the story. She dos miss her lake back in good old Germany. She could still remember how in the old days shepherds would come to her lake with their sheep, drawn by her melodious siren song. She then wondered how long this water spirit has lived and what tales he had to tell. Living eternity in a lake has alwas been a dull life with the only excitement being a lost wanderer. The nix then noticed the kelpie looking at her funny. She returned a 'What do you want?' look to the kelpie. Laila had a bad feeling from the kelpie.

Jake bristled with fury at the nix's look. What gall! she thought, fingers curling into claws as she clenched her teeth, lips curling away from them. How dare she, a mere nix be so rude! Her teeth--every last one of them--began to take on a sharpness no human mouth should ever contain, no horse mouth for that matter. Her ears curved to a point at the end and her irises widened so that the white sclera nearly disappeared. She let out a gust of air she'd been holding and forced herself to relax, hiding her face with one long-fingers hand, nails reluctantly returning to normal as he course hair softened. At last her features returned to normal as she regained her control.

She finally sighed again, softer this time, and dropped her hand. She turned slowly to look darkly at the nix. "Do not make me eat you, little two-leg-thing," she rumbled, sounding more animalistic than usual. "I may wear this cloak of humanity, but do not forget that I am a proud kelpie--and I am old enough to be your grandmother many times over." She sighed, feeling suddenly very old, and turned her back on the nix again, pointedly ignoring her. "I am too old for this," she breathed, barely audible. "Far, far too old." Why was she even here? Oh yes. She carefully went over the events leading up to this again, painfully, if briefly, reliving the events she'd undergone at the hands of humans. She had a new appreciation for the absolute filthiness of liver.

Laila was stunned by the kelpie's outburst. "Watch who you are talking to. I am older than I look. Older than you may believe. I still remember when my home was called Prussia or the Holy Roman Empire. Heck, even before that. So watch your tongue horse," Laila said her melodious voice now sounding like a raging storm. "And if two legs are bothering you then how about four?" she asked shifting into a black mouse on top of her desk. "Or eight?" she said shifting into a tarantula. "Or maybe none?" Laila then shifted into a sleek black cobra and bared her fangs at the kelpie. She then changed back to human and was seated on her chair. "Now be a good horse before I quire the taste for kelpie," Laila said with a smirk. And she thought the nymphs were annoying. The only reason she was here was to make sure the humans leave her home alone. The humans started to poison her lake to kill her for killing all those humans in the past. Now she was here so the humans would leave the animals at home alone. Why did humans have to ruin everything?

She looked at her, jaw dropped open in shock. Her lips curled cruelly and she threw back her head to laugh, unable to contain it. "You? A nix? You are little better than a nymph, and you dare to threaten me? How amusing! Perhaps this place was not such a waste of time if I get to see a treat like this! What an arrogant little fish! You can't even survive without your precious little puddle!" She pressed her hand to her chest, laughing a full-throated, gallant laugh that brought tears to her eyes.

She stood up abruptly, chair screeching its protest. She turned to grin ferally at the nix, teeth sharp enough to put a wolf to shame and eyes black from corner to corner. "I am old enough to remember when things did not have names, when the lands were still coated in ice and snow from end to end. Your little 'Prussia' does nothing to impress me--I am so old I may very well die of old age soon." The kelpie laughed again and Hino shivered, watching her with wide eyes.

"You will have to excuse my outburst, Madame Teacher," she said, grinning at the little human. Her eyes and teeth had returned to normal, save for her canines which stubbornly maintained their razor edge. "If you'll pardon me, I need to use the 'restroom.'" She laughed again and strode out of the room, sounding rather like an evil witch in all the cheesiest movies.

{{ ^^ I did research on nixes and wasn't impressed(and no, I didn't use Wiki) It sounded rather like a shape-shifting siren to me. Sorry if this offends, but I found the "kelpie" and "water horse" legends more...fearsome. -shrug- }}

((They are like a shape-shifting sirens, but are also very tricky and scheming. I first fell in love with them after reading about them in Grim Tales. I've always loved sirens, maybe because I can't sing even if my life depends on it XD. And I see the shape-shifting as a bonus. I'm also adding my own twist to the species and filling in some gaps. Like their diet for example. And I couldn't find anything about them coming out of water so I'm improvising on that too. All I've read about nixie out of water is that they can't stay away from it long. But kelpies are ok too I guess. Don't know much about them other than they are horses living in water. Too tired to do research.))

Laila raised an eyebrow as the kelpie left. What a strange creature. Was it something I said? She then looked back on the conversation. Maybe I should apoligize. Laila then got up from her seat and gave an innocent smile to the teacher. "I'm sorry Ma'am, I too need to be excused from this class at the moment. I will make up for absences later," she said politely leaving the room before the teacher could answer. She then ran down the halls to catch up with the kelpie. "Wait! Water horse!" Laila called to the kelpie. "I'm sorry if I offended you. I am not good at conversing with others since finding those to communicate with is scarce where I live," Laila apologized catching up to the kelpie. She did not mean to anger the kelpie this much.

{{ I admit to being biased. ^^; I read one book where sirens were just...distasteful and have rather disliked them since.
I've been attached to kelpies for so long I can't even remember why. Yes, they're "water horses." Wiki's article does them no justice. They eat humans, except the liver which is poisonous to them. In every thing I've seen/read them in, they're very powerful water "spirits" and also generally solitary. It's a very...complicated breed, and every story/legend/etc is different, but in generally they're powerful horses that can take the shape of humans and live in the water. And eat meat. Not just humans, obviously. }}

She shook her head, rubbing her neck and listening to her bones protest. Immortals were not supposed to grow old. Perhaps she really would die soon. Well, soon by her approximation. Unless that crazed man-thing(Kastor) decides to take an interest in me. I don't plan on playing nice with someone such as him who reeks of death and insanity. He would make a good kelpie. I will have to tell him that some day. She stopped, turning to look curiously at the nix. Her mouth turned up at the corner in a crooked smile and she reached out to lightly ruffle the nix's hair.

"I am old an impatient. I was rude and you responded in kind. I would not hold a grudge over such a thing," she said with a shrug, surprising herself. Hino must be wearing off on me. "You may call me Jake, if you'd like, instead of 'water horse.' It is a misleading name that and tends to give the idea of something much more innocent than I." She hadn't meant to speak so properly, but she'd forgotten her 'lessons' in 'slang'. Oh well.

((Yes, but nixie aren't just sirens. They can not only shape-shift into other animals, but also change their appearance all together. And what book did you read about sirens? And I was saying what I know about kelpies from common knowledge I have on the species. And Wiki isn't so kind on the nixie either. Actually Wikapedia calls a nix a neck. The thing I love most about the nixie is their silver tongue (not literal). They are very intelligent and are known to be smooth talkers. Which is why you never make a deal with a nix, even if they say they can grant your wish. I'm not even sure that nixie eat humans, most of the time they just drown people just because they feel like it. And as for kelpies, I may be wrong, but isn't the heart also poisonous for them?))

Laila laughed, her voice like a thousand tinkling bells. "Ok Jake, and you may call me Laila. Would 'man-eating water horse' be less innocent?" she asked jokingly. She then examined Jake over. On the outside Jake didn't look that old to her. She then looked into the kelpie's eyes. She saw the eyes of a tired warrior, but not old. Just worn and tired. It was imposable for immortals too loose the eternal young shine, right? "You say you are old, but that is imposable. You are immortal. But I'm guessing you feel like this?" Laila said shifting into an old woman. Her skin started to shrivel up and hang loosely on her bones. Her long rich black hair became thin and silvery white. Now before the kelpie stood a little elderly woman, but her eyes still shone with radiance and youth.

{{ I can't seem to remember what book it was. I just know that they portrayed sirens as being...just plain silly(in an annoying way) and they made no sense. I'm generally disliked all things siren-like since then. -shrug- I do like the nixie though; shape-shifting is always fun. And I've read both; just the liver or the heart and the liver, but I thought the heart thing was just silly. -shrug- But yeah; Jake doesn't eat either one. It just sounds better to just say "liver" than "liver and heart." ^^ }}

Jake chuckled, smiling that crooked smile. There was nothing musical about her, no bells or songs or flittering birds, but she certainly had an appealing quality about her. "It's a pleasure, I'm sure, Laila," she drawled, appreciating the humor. She tilted her head curiously as the nix examined her, hair draping into her face. It felt too soft to her, too human. The coarse hair of a horse made far more sense. "Yes," she murmured, sounding tired. "I feel like an old crone. As if I should acquire a cane and limp my way to my death bed. I have no children and no mate, and little hope of finding one in this world. The humans who knew me are dead and I am a long, long ways from home. When I die..." She paused, tilting her head to stare at the ceiling, looking distant. As if she saw not the chalky white ceiling with the fluorescent lights but something far away, perhaps looking into the past. "When I die," she repeated. "Only that little phoenix will remember me. I have learned many true names, yet I doubt even one of those belongs to someone still living today. Perhaps, before I die, I will accomplish something to help the other immortals. Wouldn't that be ironic? For someone like me to be remembered as a benevolent being." She laughed again, one short bark of laughter that hurt her throat. Her eyes returned to Laila. "I should never have lived this long," she murmured. "It is a mistake of fate that I am this old. Perhaps the gods laugh at me, at the pitiful creature I have become." She fell silent for a moment, closing her eyes and visibly withering. Then suddenly she smirked and drew herself up again, once more a proud and powerful kelpie. "Well then," she said, voice abruptly stronger as she gave the nix a feral, though not threatening, grin. "I suppose I will just have to laugh louder."

((When you find out tell me. I'm used to seeing sirens as these beautiful maidens that call sailors to their shore by singing of their true desires and then ripping them up limb by limb, eating the poor souls. The first time I've heard of sirens was from the "Odyssey". I guess it does sound kind of weird saying "liver and heart" XD Do you know if there is a reason for that? Usually there is a meaning for most myths and I'm wondering if there is a significance to the heart and liver in that culture *Shrugs*))

Laila shifted back into her young dark haired maiden form that she vainly loved. She then took Jake's hand in friendship and comfort. "You will not be forgotten. If you ever journey to the House of Death I will mourn you and tell great stories about you. Well, once I've acquired stories to tell," Laila said with a light laugh. She then smiled when she heard Jake talk more up beat. "That's the spirit. Live long and loud and your life will prosper. And I thought kelpie were creatures of solitude. Why would a mate or children interest you?" she asked out of curiosity, not harshness. She was glad to see the horse strong and zealous instead of being frail and withering. "Though I fear, my new friend, that this place smells of death. Innocent creatures have been dropping like flies because of being born the way they are. Lend me your ears and I will tell you what I've witnessed. These humans are mad. Nothing but foolish mortals trying to play God. These halls wreak with evil and insanity. Especially from that Head Master," the nix said keeping her voice low in case a passing teacher might over hear or someone will walk out into the hall.
