Chapter 1.02

When I got into the living room, my mom had her face buried in her hands, and my dad was patting her on the back. I purposefully pretended to trip, just to make a sound so they knew I was here. Dad looked up at me and gave me a weak smile, and mom didn’t even lift her head up to acknowledge me. She probably didn’t even notice me. I heard small, light footsteps, coming my way, and turned to see Fleck, my ten year old sister, slowly walked towards me, one hand rubbing her tired eyes, the other grasping a teddy bear that hung by her side. She got to the doorway, and I didn’t stop her from looking in, though I kind of wished I did. She looked at our crying mother, our sad father, and turned to me.
“Why are mommy and daddy crying?” She asked, looking up at me with big blue desperate eyes.
I didn’t know how to reply. I didn’t know if I could reply.
“I’m going to war, Fleck.” I said gently, with a sad smile.
Fleck’s eyes widened until they took over her small face. I could see tears forming in them, and reached out for her. She slammed into my arms, sobbing and crying words that I couldn’t hear properly. She hugged me tightly, and instead of replying to her words, I stroked her hair and comforted her. We stayed like that for a while, until Dad came up behind us. He hugged us both, then turned to me.
“Remember Kate, you have one week with us. Make the most of it.” He told me.
I nodded and went to my room, shut the door behind me, and flopped onto the sheets, thinking about what I’d do with my week. Eventually, I decided I’d call my friends first, then my family, then I’d pack.
I walked down the hall and grabbed the phone. I dialed a number of one of my friends, I couldn’t remember who’s, and heard it ringing their house.
“Hello?” A familiar voice sounded on the other end of the line.
“Hi Ava, it’s Kate.”

In the end, the same conversation rang over and over. I always told the person I’d be going to war. Simple. And then they’d gasp, and ask if I was okay, and carry on with that kind of nonsense. After this morning, I wished people stopped acting like I wouldn’t be coming back. It just made me scared. More scared than I already was of course. I packed and after that, the week went by quickly.
It was the 1st of January, in the middle of the day, when two women knocked on the door. I stumbled down the stairs to answer it, but mom was faster. She opened the door, and I saw them. They were dressed in black, business-like suits, their hair pulled back in tight ponytails. They also these cool glasses on, that made them look like secret agents more than everything else. The moment I saw them, I knew what they were here for. I rushed upstairs, grabbed the handle of my suitcase, and dragged it down the stairs. When I got to the doorstep, they smiled at me, and told me to come with them. I obeyed, but not before I hugged my parents goodbye. I got into a shiny black toyota, that had soft leather seats, and away we drove. I remember looking out the window at my parents before I was driven away. They were devastated. Tears ran down Mom’s face, and Dad was obviously trying to keep them in. I forced one last smile for them, then dropped my gaze. We arrived at the airport, and the door was opened for me. I stepped out, smiled my thanks, pulled my bag out of the flash car, and slung my backpack over one sholder. The women and I walked down the corridor of the airport, and I was pulled through customs quickly. Then, I had to sit in the waiting area for a while. More people arrived, and the area started becoming crowded. At last a voice boomed in the speakers, telling us that plane 792 was ready for boarding. I walked into hundreds of kids, sitting in the comfortable plane seats. A few were crying. A few were red with anger. A few looked blank. And a few actually looked bored. Everybody was tapping at the screens in front of them, headphones covering their ears. I walked down the isle to my assigned seat, 17B. A pretty girl around my age sat in 17A. Her brown hair fell in ringlets around her face, and her amber eyes flicked up to me. She smiled, and I smiled back, plonking myself down in my seat. I stuffed my carry-on backpack under the seat, and looked at her.
“Hi!” The girl chirped.
Suddenly I realized her face was familiar. I had seen her before, but I couldn’t remember where. I sat there, staring at her for a while, trying to place where I had seen her.
“What?” She asked looking worried. “Do I have food on my face?”
That’s when it came to me. School.
“No, no, there’s nothing wrong. Sorry, I shouldn’t have stared.” I told her. “Did you by any chance go to rosedale?”
The girl looked surprised.
“Yes, as a matter of fact, I did. Did you?”
“Yes!”
“Oh! I thought I’d seen you before! What’s your name?”
“Kate. Kate Harlesworth.”
“I’m Belle. Belle Rivera. Nice to meet you Kate.
“You too.”
“So.. What do you think of all this?”
“It’s pretty sad, if you ask me. But what’s done is done. We’ll just have to put up with it.”
“Exactly! Ugh, some of the people here have taken it really badly. One boy threw a punch at his guides.”
“I wonder where we’re going.”
“Somewhere far away, that’s for sure.”
