The work dog -- number 249 -- shifted his shoulders against the weight of the horses' saddle they had used on him. The dust swirled around his muzzle, making his eyes stream tears and his nose itch. He sneezed, but the dust didn't disappear.
Every breath was clogged and painful.
The reins bit into him uncomfortably. They hadn't been built for a puppy like himself. His paws ached from the dry, brittle grass and crumbling dirt. He couldn't concentrate. Each time he tried to, his mind failed, and all he could see was the bleeding orange sunset as another work day closed in on itself.
Why? he thought. I'm not a mule. I'm a puppy and I want my mother.
He stumbled across the dust, his tail dragging; his legs shook.
The work dog closed his eyes and cried.
