Does anyone know whether the [better] brands mentioned are available in the UK, and if not what the equivalents are over here? c: I'm getting a rescue dog sometime this year from Battersea and I think they feed Pedigree, but obviously I'd prefer closer to the ~*best*~ out there. :B

I'm not really sure what they have over in the UK, but the important thing to look for when buying dog food, and if you are commited to getting your dog the best kind of food, it's to look at the ingredients. I personally, when I was still feeding kibble, I would only buy dry foods that had at least the first three ingredients listed as real meat. I've seen as high as five ingredients as meat listed first. If the ingredients start with real meat, then it's usually a decent dog food.

Some people believe that their dogs do fine on lesser quality food, and they may seem that way, but there's a big difference in a dog that looks fine, and one that is actually living the best life it can. Dogs are more likely to live much healthier, happier, and longer lives on a good quality food. It's great to know that you are trying to feed your dog the best =)

Bearsy: Most places that stock Orijen also stock Acana. They are the same company and pretty much the same quality. Acana is a bit cheaper and still has awesome grain-free options!

We switched our food to Dog Chow and our cat to Cat Chow.

Both are still really bad. If you -have- to buy at a grocery store looking into Purina Beyond One or Kirklands at Cosco. Other that you you really want a grainfree food to be honest. Taste of the Wild can be found at most feed stores and its the cheapest grain free food.

We've gone YEARS with Kibbles 'n Bits, and our dogs do just fine. We had our cat on Meow Mix but he never ate it.

Kibbles and Bits is basically like feeding your dog twinkies it's whole life. Just imagine that for a second.

As said before, many people see their dogs as "doing just fine" until they switch to a very high quality food or even raw. I have seen no one properly switch their animals over and say that they haven't noticed a huge difference in health and appearance.

I could "do just fine" eating nothing but candy, mcdonalds, and pizza. As a college student, I've done that some months. However I always notice an improvement in my overall health and concentration when I eat actual meals that are at least healthier for me than that.

Yes but what kinds of food? Are you talking about really high quality foods or stuff that is really simiilar to Dog Chow and Kibbles N' Bits? And you can't expect instant results. Dogs usually need to be on the same diet for several weeks to a month before you start to see significant imrpovement.

Well we fed them Old Yeller dry food, Kibbles 'n Bits, Ol' Roy, and Dog Chow or IAMS.
