One can be having a nice disscussion on parts of their religion then some other jerk has to swoop in and say "you're all freakin stupid because you believe in that rather than this" or "everyone who believes in that is *insert generic demeaning adj. here*". I HATE it. Doesn't matter if its christians or atheists doing it, its freakin rude. Its not as if we were trying to jam our disscussion down your throats.
Ugh. Then I get all shakey when trying to respond because I'm so angry...
I agree - I personally really enjoy friendly debates so long as everything stays respectful, but the whole thing can get ruined by someone getting too emotionally involved or going on the attack. Not only does it make people want to stop with the discussion and tend to degenerate both sides into just insulting each other, but it reflects badly on others who are on the same side belief-wise as the swooper. It's not like insulting someone else's point of view makes them more likely to consider your own - it just makes everyone defensive and upset and increases the feeling of 'us vs. them', which doesn't exactly further understanding of others. >.< It's the same no matter what is being discussed, whether it's religion, climate change, breed bans or Twilight. Sorry about what happened, by the way - I feel a little like it was my fault. =(
