Names are so irrelevant? Don't you see, people lable you, give you new names. But what if we had other names, names we were born with, not our given name or our taken names. What if we had a name that gave us power. To get what ever we want. What if it was also a curse; a lesson to be taught.
You see I knew all three of my names; I was lucky to know the name I was born with. I was the only one; the only one who saw my name. It was etched into the naming stone. I didn't mean to find the stone. I tripped over it on a field trip.
But I glanced, I saw my name and I was doomed. It cursed me; I now know why.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I stared at the ceiling. My heart was pounding, I still remembered what happened today on the feild trip. The strange little stone in the graveyard, the other two names written by mine. The naming stone; that's what was scratched into the top. It was mystical.
I remembered the way my body tingled as I memorised the names, like a tiny electric current surging through my body. It felt like a shiver. Like a cold blast of wind had just been blown down through my blood. My heart had skipped several beats and I was frozen there watching the stone.
"Look at Alyssa; she's having a staring contest with a stone." Alaria laughed and everyone joined in. I blushed and quickly climbed to my feet and hurried to join the others.
I shot a last glance at the naming stone to see a man stood there. A tilbe upon his scruffy black hair. He tilted his tilbe and smiled sadly as I followed my class back toward the coach.
He waved, I was startled into waving back-it was more of waggling my fingers and looking like a fool.
"Look now Alyssa is waving goodbye to the stone." Alaria yelled and I felt myself go red, my cheeks burning in embarassment. Could no one else see the man sat on the stone?
I turned away and hurried over to my best friend. Duncan was stood nearby and was watching me curiously; of course being me, I blushed even more.
Rennie was in a heated argument with Sass about the school uniform. She didn't even glance at me as I approached. She screeched at Sass, Sass being Sass didn't take that well.
"Don't screech at me, the skirts aren't meant to be as high as yours. They are meant to be below the knees, not right up your thigh so when you bend over the boys can see your underwear." Sass snapped and Rennie glowered at her.
"So it's my uniform, you are such a geek sometimes. I wish you would just go away." Rennie yelled, now everyone was turning to face them. I blinked at them from where I stood.
"Uh...guys...please try not to embarass me anymore than I have done myself today." I begged them and they finally took notice of me stood there. I was slightly taller than them. They nodded at me then shook hands.
"So, apparantly today you had a staring contest with a stone..." Sass commented and Rennie sniggered.
"No," I said quickly, "There was this stone, the naming stone, my name was on there, I have three names." Rennie blinked at me like I'd just dribbled on my shirt and then burst out laughing. Sass smirked, trying to stop the laughter spilling.
"Tell me I'm not dying." Rennie begged, tears had began to stream from her eyes.
"Guys I'm serious." I wanted to scream but me being me, I smiled and shrugged like it didn't bother me. But I can tell you it killed me that my own two best friends didn't believe a word I just said.
"O...M...G...Alyssa you sure no how to make my day." Rennie gasped. People blinked at her wondering what was so funny. I felt my anger rise. I wasn't lying, I wasn't making it up.
I wanted her to, so badly, be taught a lesson, sometimes she could be so annoying. Suddenly her left shoe caught on fire and she screamed. Sass and me jumped back, I cried out in fright.
"Sir....SIR MY SHOE IS ON FIRE...IT HURTS MAKE IT STOP!" Rennie screamed and our teacher, Mr some-name-I-can't-remember, rushed over and yelled for a bucket of water.
He took his jacket off and threw it on Rennie's shoe. His jacket put out the fire. Rennie was told to sit on the coach steps and put her foot in the cold bucket of water.
Somehow I did that, I made Rennie suffer for what she did. But magic was a myth, did it have something to do with the stone?
I sat up, my pajama top stuck to my back, I shivered when I saw the man with the tilbe sat on my trunk at the end of my bed. I felt like screaming but he raised his finger to his lips and a sly smile spread on his face.
"Shush..." He whispered. I felt my breath catch in my throat. I gulped and took a deep breath. I needed to scream, I could feel it building in my throat, forcing its way out.
The man with the tilbe stood and began to mke it round to the side of my bed, I couldn't hold it in, I screamed. My scream filled the house.
I heard a thump from my parents room, one of them had fallen out of bed, I heard the sounds of them rushing to my room. My door flung open and they rushed in.
"Alyssa what's wrong?" My mother asked, I glanced at her. My breath was coming out quick and fast. I looked around frantically, the man with the tilbe had gone.
"There was a man...in a tilbe...he was sat there." I explained pointing at the trunk.
"Aww sweetie, there is no man...it was just a nightmare." My father smiled, he came over to me and sat on the edge of my bed.
"No it wasn't I saw him today at the graveyard-he was there when we had our field trip." I exclaimed and my mother bit her lip and looked at my father.
"Sweetie, we heard about a doctor. Shall we book you an appointment?" He asked and I glowered at him.
"I am not crazy!" I yelled and my mother sighed. They both said their goodnights and left me to sit there drenched in cold sweat with new anger glazing my vision.
Why did no one believe me? I was telling the truth, I wasn't lying, why were the human race so thick. Always to quick to jump to conclusions, to realise that they are not open minded.
I heard my parents scream and then silence, I panicked and hid under my quilt.
"Alyssa there's a fire." My father bellowed. He rushed in and grabbed me, he lifted me up and I felt him carry me outside and place me on the grass.
"Sorry dad." I muttered. He smiled and looked at me.
"It wasn't your fault." He muttered and I felt like slapping him, couldn't he see it was my fault, first Rennie and now my parents. I was so angry with myself right now.
The man with the tilbe was across the road, watching me with his dark eyes. He smiled and waited till my parents had walked off to ring the firebrigade. He walked over a snide smile on his face. My breath caught in my throat.
"You must take my place." His voice scraped the inside of my stomach. I gasped as he grabbed my wrist and I felt my body erupt in agony. I screamed and I saw my parents rush round the corner. My mother screamed, I saw her rush forward and pick me up. I watched her cradle my lifeless body in her arms.
I blinked and screamed again, I was dead. Then I found myself in the graveyard.
Ever since that day I've guarded the stone. But no one was as unlucky as me to glance at the stone. Maybe your true name is one you already no, you glance in dreams. If you do. I'm coming for you so don't close your eyes.
Your true name unlocks powers that only the dead can possess, I'm coming to get you so don't sleep, don't get amgry you need to hide, to run, to never scream when you see me. A little girl with a tible and big black eyes.
