"Rink tonight, you in?"
I smiled, nodding. "Totally. Who's all coming?"
She grinned. "Me, you..." she trailed off. I knew that look in her eyes.
"Let me guess - You're bringing along the guy of your dreams?" I asked with a smirk. I didn't even really need to ask. I knew she was. She'd been obsessed with this guy for at least a year now.
She nodded shamelessly. "You don't mind, do you?"
I shook my head. "Not at all."
"Great. I'll see you later."
"See you."
I hugged my best friend and turned, back towards her. I began to walk home, the surprisingly warm February air ruffling my hair. I knew who she was bringing. Hunter. That guy she was so in love with. They weren't dating, but she had a huge crush on him. So huge that I was pretty sure that classifying it as a crush was the biggest understatement of the year.
I hadn't ever really thought much about him. Emma and I were in seventh grade, he was in eighth. We used to be almost next-door neighbours, and I'd talked to him from time to time, but we barely knew each other. I didn't understand why she was so obsessed with him - Then again, that was probably because I didn't really know him.
Time passed quick and before I knew it, I was getting out of Emma's stepdad's car and walking into the hockey rink. Nobody our age actually came here to watch the hockey - No, we came here for the food and to just hangout. We paid ourselves in, and she informed me that we were sneaking Hunter in.
It was way too easy to sneak people into the hockey rink, so that they didn't have to pay for admission, which was pretty expensive unless you lied about your age. For people twelve years old and younger, it was only five dollars. For people thirteen years old, like Emma and I, and older, it was eight. So we lied, said we were twelve, and saved three dollars.
Emma told me that I was to meet Hunter outside. The way to sneak people in was simple. There was a door that only opened from inside the rink. There were stairs outside that led up to it. To sneak someone in, all you had to do was get two people inside. One person would stand inside waiting to open the door, and the other would go outside and escort the person to the door, where you would do a secret knock. Then the person on the inside would open the door and boom - You were in.
I walked outside, looking for Hunter. I quickly found him and jogged up to him. "Emma's waiting by the door. Come on." I said to him, beginning to walk towards the stairs.
Hunter smiled. "You act like you've done this before."
"I have." I simply replied. "I sneak people in all the time."
"Rebellious." he commented. "I like that."
I grinned. "Good to know."
"Sneaking your boyfriend in tonight?" he asked slowly.
I knew exactly what he was doing. "Nope, don't have one." I played along.
He tilted his head with a shocked look. "Really? I'm surprised. Very surprised."
"My last boyfriend broke up with me a while ago." I said, shrugging.
"Was he admitted to a mental hospital afterwards? Because I don't see how anybody in their right mind would breakup with you. I barely know you and I wouldn't break up with you."
I blushed. This wasn't proper. Emma had a gigantic crush on him, and what kind of best friend was I being by flirting with him? "We wouldn't be dating in the first place."
"Hard to get, too?" Hunter said with a sneaky smirk. "Challenge accepted."
I rolled my eyes. "Whatever, come on."
