I read somewhere that petting a nervous or frightened rat in a box or under a cloth is supposed to help calm it, but I don't know if the advice would apply to the above situation.

Yes XD It's not necessary to be accepted to post here ^^

So, on the subject of rats........
I'm pretty sure I'm not getting rats any time soon, but is obtaining them from a rescue center who knows nothing about them just as bad as getting them from a petshop? Our local rescue has two gorgeous boys in, but from the description knows nothing much about rats. Would it be okay to obtain them from there (though I don't think I'd be getting than particular pair) be okay?
Personaly I would rescue them as it gives them another chance and you can always handle them before you get them pluss they would had been treated from any illnesses. Getting them from a pet store is bad as they come from a cruel breeding center normalt which means you don't know much about also they are normally unhealthy. I personally would not go to a breeder either as some breeders generally only care about the money and normaly just keep two or more rats together in a cage to constantly create babies also people who call themselves hobby breeders have no need to breed rats, they do it because they can and want money. If you do go to a breeder you should ask why they are breeding them and how.
Sorry for my slow response time on RP's. My new job steals ALL my time. :(

I think if I got them- as our local rescues tend not to have rats in- it'd be from a hobby breeder. From what I've read, they produce the best pups (I think that's the name...?).

Rats aren't supposed to be tailless, if they are it is sadly not a good thing... definitely shouldn't support any breeders who are apparently breeding them. They are either breeding unhealthy rats... and some breeders even dock their tails to sell them for more money...
In that case...that's just sad and wrong on all levels. I was under the impression than a tailless rat was like the manx cat, but obviously not. At least I know to avoid breeders to breed tailless if I'm ever fortunate enough to be allowed rats.
there such thing as a tail less rat breed, I think it's called Manx.
My friend used to have fun, the rat was fine, even through it didn't climb as much.....

Absolutely sick to my stomach..
I know it's not rat related, but it's mice related..
I woke up at 3:50am with a bad feeling.. I checked on my mice, only to see Jamie in the corner alone. I picked her up, and she was frigid.. labored breathing.. heartbeat fast..
I swear it's like Solace all over again, but in the form of a little blue, long haired mouse.. rather than a dove english mark rat..
I encouraged her to snuggle with the others and left peanut butter crackers in the food dish in case she decides to eat. All she seems to want is literally my flesh/skin.. I wash my hands before I play with them.. but shes been trying to eat my skin lately.. before I picked her up, I was petting my coyote pelts.. >.< which would explain it, they smell like.. well.. wild.. lol..
is that.. normal? Solace actually did the same thing, before I had my yotes.. and a few of my rats (as well as my cockatiel) seem to like to rip the dead skin off my fingers/lip whenever they get the chance the little buggers. ._. painful..
Jamie is, like all my others, from Petco - as a 'rescued feeder' since the manager knows me and calls whenever she has colored or sweet rats/mice I'm looking for she doesn't want sold simply as snake food..
