Pet's name: Jamal
An African Tale

I was born missing a leg. When I was very young, my pack abandoned me. I had to fend for myself, which wasn't easy. There was lions, and of course, people. Not much water, and it was very hot.

I lapped up some water from the water hole. My stomach growled. I couldn't kill anything, I wasn't strong enough. None of my kind can kill by themselves. They usually hunt in packs. I have to eat though, and this is where it gets dangerous. I have to steal from the lions.

I crawl through the tall grass towards the lions. They are about to attack an antelope, I could tell. They pounce. The prey takes off, with the lion clinging to it. She jumps in front of the antelope and attacks it from the front, clamping her jaws on the wind pipe. The antelope falls to the ground, now their lunch. The male lions comes over, and the lionesses step back. The male lion takes a bite first, then when he is full, it is usually the lionesses turn. But this time, its my turn.

I leap into action, grabbing the antelope. The lions are stunned, frozen in place. I drag the antelope away, hoping to be able to get it into the grass before the lions realize what just happened. Suddenly, I hear the male lion roar. He leaps at me, but I dodge him and burst into a sprint, leaving the antelope behind for more speed. I run toward a village, not paying attention. I hear the lions behind me, enjoying the chase as the close the gap between us. I know I am too slow to outrun them, I can't run fast on three legs. I hear people in the village scream as I dart between the huts. I stop and look back when I don't hear the lions anymore. They are sitting close to the village, watching me. I shiver, feeling their eyes staring right at me. I walk toward them, feeling brave. Sitting right in front of them, I smile and laugh. They wont touch me. They seem aggravated, but they aren't moving. Of course, I forgot about the humans. One woman marched right up to me and smacked me with her broom, sending me flying toward the lions. The lionesses take this to their advantage, hitting me in mid air. I hit the ground with a thud, losing consciousness.

I woke up in a cage, alive. My chest hurt badly, right where one of my legs was. Wait-what? I let out a yelp, struggling to get up. Wheres my leg? I can't walk on two legs!!! Two people walk over to a shelf near the cage. They picked up a strange contraption I had never seen before. I tilted my head, the pain subsiding for a second. What is- Something shot out of it and hit me. I yelped. Why are they doing this to me? i don't deserve...deserve...this....

I woke up sleepily. My head was fogged up, and everything was blurry. My legs where numb, they felt like jello. I tried to stand up, but one of my legs felt strange. Then everything flooded back. I panicked, looking down. That leg wasn't there. Now I only had two legs. How was I gonna walk? How was I gonna live???

Later, two people came up to my cage, different people than before. I slid back best I could, growling. "It's okay, calm down. We are going to help you." She cooed. I glared at her, not letting her get any closer. She had that thing in her hand. She aimed it at me, and a dart shot out of it. I got a little dizzy, than passed out.

I awoke dizzy again, unsure where I was. I didn't forget a thing though. I was attacked by lions, lost another leg- Wait a minute! I had all of my legs. The two I was missing were...robotic? I tried to move them. They bent just like they were real, but I felt like I was shocked by electricity, the pain shooting up my body. I winced. The person on guard chuckled, he wasn't being too friendly. "And you know what else, dog? You are going to the zoo once you heal." I ignored the human, I couldn't understand him anyways. I lay down, still a little shaken. I soon fell asleep.

A month or two passed. I was giving antibiotics they stuck in the meat, and each day I was taken out and socialized, also to stretch my muscles and to teach me how to use my biotic legs. It seems, the more I exercise, the less pain in my chest I get. One day, everybody seemed a little sad. I didn't know why, because they were usually joyful and happy to see me. I grew to love them as well. But the lady who usually takes care of me, she came over to me and knelt down next to me. She rubbed me between the ears. "We are all going to miss you." I was confused. Over the couple months I had been here, I had picked up some human language. I understood miss and you. Why will they miss me? I'm not going anywhere. She hugged me, then gave me my food and left. Before she turned to go, I saw a tear roll down her cheek.

Later, she came back. She put a chain around my neck, and commanded me to stand up like she taught me in training. I obeyed her, thinking we where just going for training. She took the leash and said told me to come. I followed her out the door, confused. She led me up to a truck, and made me lay down in a small cage. I whimpered and nudged her. She smiled sadly. She bent down to kiss me. "I will never forget you." She removed the leash and shut the cage door gently. "Goodbye." She whispered and climbed down off the truck. She left the door open though. Soon, a man came out and slammed the doors shut. As we drove off, I felt like I was being ripped apart, and all of my pieces being thrown away. I was hers. Only hers. Why did this have to happen?

When the truck finally came to a stop, the man came back and opened the doors. He opened the door of my cage and put a chain around my neck, making it way too tight. I had a little trouble breathing, I felt like I was gonna pass out. The guy tugged hard on my leash and pulled me forward. "Come on, you worthless animal. You aren't worth the money they put on those legs." I followed reluctantly. I was still gasping for breath. He chuckled when he saw me. He pulls open a cage and throws me in, making my neck jerk back because he was still holding onto the leash. "Oops." He said sarcastically, unclipping the leash. I gasped to take in air. He chuckled, then turned around and climbed back into his truck and drove away. I stared after him. I laid down with my head on my metal paws. For the first time ever, I was mad at them. I smacked them down on the ground, irritated. I howled in anger. I shook my head. Why am I such a wimp?

A couple minutes later, a lady walks into my cage. She was one of those people who made everybody's day, I could tell.I wagged my tail just a tiny bit. She came over and rubbed behind my ear, just how the other girl would. I was smiling now. "Lets move you to your new, real habitat." She put a leash around my neck, the third time today. I followed her. She was really gentle. She led me to a place that looked a lot like that my home when I was younger. She took my leash off once when we were inside. "Here is your new home! Now we have to come up with a name." She looked at me as if I would give her an answer. "Oh! I know!" She smiled. "Jamal. It means handsome, which you definitely are!" She rubbed my cheek. "Now I got to go. See ya later, Jamal." She stood up and left me. Once again, I was alone. But I was happy.

I still miss the girl that helped me when I was hurt, but this other girl, she is a loving person. She visits me every day twice a day, and spends all her spare time with me. And the other girl visits me once in awhile too. I was a new exhibit. I was their first African wild dog. They have gotten a few more though, all male, and there has been a rumor going around a girl will be arriving soon...

thanks. That took me, like, all afternoon! I don't know why it took me so long. I am planning on making a girl african wild dog too, that will be my next story. Than Her and Jamal's story can intertwine!

Edit: I just noticed, the pet I am using is the one you have in your signature!
