“Quinn, you will be rooming with Rachel.
Rachel’s eyes closed as she slumped down further into her chair. Santana snorted and Brittany elbowed the Latina, shushing her. Everyone else in Glee held their breath, waiting for Quinn’s reaction to Mr. Schue’s announcement. The head cheerleader rolled her eyes and tossed her blond locks over her shoulder.
“Mr. Schue, no offense, but can’t I just room alone?”
Rachel sank even lower into her chair, willing the moment to be over. Mr. Schue sighed and ran his fingers through his hair.
“Quinn, there aren’t enough rooms for you to bunk alone. I planned out the room assignments very carefully. You’re just going to have to make do.”
Quinn opened her mouth to protest, but shut it, knowing there was no use in arguing. She was stuck rooming with Rachel Berry for two weeks. There was no escaping it. She blew out a puff of air, causing her bangs to flutter.
“Remind me again why we’re going on this stupid trip?”
Mr. Schue had spontaneously decided that, due to McKinley’s three weeks of winter break, the Glee kids needed a break. He, along with Ms. Pilsbury another chaperone, would be taking the entire club to spend the two weeks after Christmas at his parent’s cabin in Lake Tahoe. He had promised the kids 14 days full of fun in the snow. They had been skeptical at first, but anyone could see that they all looked forward to the trip. Even the snappy Santana was beginning to show a glimmer of excitement.
No one bothered to answer Quinn’s question as she huffed her annoyance and sat back down in her chair. She glared through the next hour until finally Mr. Schue smiled at them all, releasing them from Glee.
“Alright everyone, great work today! Have a great Christmas and I’ll see you all on the 26th, bright and early at the airport!”
Everyone groaned, but laughed at his determinedly cheerful attitude, despite his kids’ thoughts on the trip. The excited teenagers chatted amongst each other as they gathered their books and departed from the room, wishing each other happy holidays until only Rachel and Quinn remained.
Quinn could feel Rachel’s eyes watching her warily as she collected her things and stood up to leave. As she straightened up, she was surprised to find the brunette still sitting in her chair, staring at the ground with a miserable expression on her face. Quinn couldn’t help but feel a tug at her heart as she gazed at the smaller girl. Sighing, she walked over and sat next to her.
“Everything okay?”
Rachel jumped at the sound of Quinn’s voice. “Oh, Quinn. You scared me.”
Quinn smirked. “Yeah, I noticed. What’s up, Berry? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you not smiling or talking at warp speed.”
Rachel gave her a tiny smile, but it quickly faded as she met the cheerleader’s eyes. Quinn was startled and a little alarmed to see that Rachel’s doe-like, brown eyes were filled with tears.
“Woah, okay something really is wrong. Let it out, come on.” Quinn said. Rachel just shook her head and looked back down at the ground, causing the tears to slide down her face like a silent waterfall. Quinn bit her lip, hesitating. She knew she should get going, and this was Rachel Berry, for God’s sake. This was the girl she had tormented for the past two years, right up until she had given birth to Beth and mellowed out her drama-queen attitude. Sure, she was still co-captain of the Cheerios, which by all means allowed her to be a total bitch whenever she wanted. But she had stopped teasing Rachel, settling for just ignoring the tiny diva.
However, despite the fact that Rachel now sat in front of Quinn, crying for some unknown reason, the blond couldn’t help but feel the need to comfort the smaller girl. She scooted her chair closer to Rachel’s and took the brunette’s hands in her own.
“Rachel.” she murmured. “What’s wrong?”
Rachel’s eyes slammed shut as more tears poured out. Quinn, not knowing what else to do, stood and pulled Rachel with her. She led the tiny diva to a relatively clean spot on the floor and sat down, leaning against the wall. She pulled Rachel down so that the smaller girl was sitting on her lap and she gently tugged the ponytail holder out of Rachel’s hair. Her long, dark waves cascaded down her back and Quinn began to lightly run her fingers through the brunette locks as Rachel buried her face into Quinn’s neck and let out a muffled sob.
A small part of Quinn’s mind marveled at the fact that the girl who she had once hated so much was now sitting on her lap, crying into her. And what’s more, Quinn’s fingers had tangled themselves into Rachel’s hair and with her other arm, she held the smaller girl close, whispering words of comfort.
After several minutes, Quinn breathed a sigh of relief as she heard Rachel’s sobs becoming less and less frequent. Her breathing evened out as she crying finally came to a stop. Taking advantage of the sudden quiet atmosphere, Quinn gently took Rachel’s chin in her hand and tipped it up so that the two girls faced each other.
“You gonna tell me what this is all about?” she asked.
Rachel sighed and shook her head. “You wouldn’t understand.” she said, tugging out of Quinn’s grasp.
Quinn wrapped her arms around Rachel’s tiny waist, pulling the smaller girl back in. “Try me.” she said.
Rachel gazed up at her and before Quinn knew what was happening, Rachel’s lips were pressing against hers in the softest, sweetest kiss she had ever imagined. Quinn’s eyes closed and all rational thoughts flew out of her head.
After several moments, Rachel pulled away, tearing falling from her eyes again. “I’m so sorry, Quinn.” she whimpered.
Quinn looked at the tiny diva’s beautiful face and gently wiped away her tears. “Don’t be.” she murmured. Rachel’s sweet scent washed over her as she leaned back in, capturing Rachel’s lips in another kiss. She felt Rachel mumble a quiet “thank you” against her lips and Quinn smiled into the kiss, taking the brunette’s hand in her own and intertwining their fingers.
Suddenly, sharing a room with Rachel Berry didn’t seem so bad.
