"Nox!" shouted another twelve-year old orphan girl named Maree from two flights below to me. "Nox! Mrs. Hawke says to stop sulking. You've been sulking for three hours already!"
Now, I know I was sulking. I was sulking for 3 hours, 23 minutes, and 44 seconds. I had a good reason for it too. My sister, the only person I had left after our parents died in a mysterious fire, my little sister Nellie was missing. Without a trace. How could I not possibly sulk?
The reason I had to put up with people like Maree and Mrs. Hawke is because Nellie and I had no living relatives left. We were brought up to live in St. Asterisk's Orphange for Girls. It was an absolute nightmare. Mrs. Hawke was this crabby old lady with yellowish eyes and teeth. She wore these ugly flowery old-lady types of dresses and she had black circular-frame glasses. Maree was my age, twelve. She had white-blonde hair and beady blue eyes. Like I said, a complete nightmare.
"Leave me alone, Maree!" I snapped, but I stood up weakly and changed into the
dreadful dress St. Asterisk girls were supposed to wear.
"Ooooh you're in trouble now Nox!" Maree said gleefully. "St. Asterisk girls aren't supposed to talk back!"
Filled with cold dread at what Mrs. Hawke's punishment would be but determined not to show it. I walked down the stairs slowly. St. Asterisk weren't supposed to run after all.
Maree was waiting for me two flights down. She looked disappointed I came downstairs but all the same, she sneered, "Where's Nellie? Where's your little demon of a sister?"
Filled with anger, I tried to ignore her as I headed into Mrs. Hawke's office.
"Nox, about time." Mrs. Hawke snarled as I sat down on. "The loss of your sister is most unfortunate but it's great I... we don't need another mouth to feed."
I ignored her too, silently noting the glee and triumph in Mrs. Hawke's tone. The woman smirked and continued on.
"It is my most unwilling desire to punish you greatly." This time her tone was filled with passion. "After all, sulking is against the rules. As is not following your head of the orphanage."
"Since when?" I demanded before I could stop myself. The head's smile broadened.
"Nox you are already in deep trouble, do not make it worse for yourself." she hissed. But I knew she couldn't wait for an excuse to whip me. Only two people in all the years Mrs. Hawke's been head have been whipped. One girl was adopted and she was seven. She was whipped for ignoring Mrs. Hawke all day. Her name was Leigh. The second girl was
fourteen and she was still here now. Still fourteen because she was whipped on her birthday when she threw a party in the dining area without Mrs. Hawke's permission.
"Look," I said struggling to keep calm. "Mrs. Hawke, my sister, she's eight as you know, she's missing. Can't I please help look for her? It's not fair Maree, Jacky, Lynda, and Charlotte are looking for her, they hate Nellie!"
"I think not, you're needed here Nox, not there." she said coldly. "So I suggest you get on now. Scrub the dining floors. That seems like a fair enough punishment." Mrs. Hawke glared at me as if waiting for an objection. I said nothing.
The head smiled and stood up. "Go ahead then, Nox. I expect this will take all morning."
I stood up too but before I could leave, Maree, Jacky, Lynda, and Charlotte burst into the office looking half-scared, half-triumphant.
"Yes, girls?" Mrs. Hawke snapped, annoyed. "Did you find the brat yet?"
"Don't call my sis-" I started to say angrily but I stopped abruptly. Mrs. Hawke was a foul woman who was as ruthless as a criminal. I glowered at her, but didn't say a word. I wanted to hear what Maree had to say.
"Mrs. Hawke, ma'am, Nellie's teddy bear. We found it ma'am." Maree said in a strangled sort of voice.
I felt a glimmer of hope. However, Mrs. Hawke didn't look at all convinced. "That's it?" she demanded.
"Ma'am, we found it by-by the forbidden room." Maree said fretfully.
I didn't see the big deal because the room was always off-limits. I figured cleaning supplies lived in it, but Mrs. Hawke suddenly looked terrefied. I wondered why.
"That's not all, miss." Maree said quietly. I could tell the head was hanging onto every word she was saying now. I was too. "The teddy bear of the girl's... it was covered with blood."

Argh, I feel it's so short. But hope you like it anyways.
