Why do you want to adopt?
-exhales and cracks fingers- Well, I've always wanted a rat character, and when I first spotted this place I was intrigued. So without further ado I started to stalk this thread, content to wait for the perfect ratlet for me to reveal itself. And then this handsome fellow appeared <333 He is everything I was looking for, packed into a striped package.
To be honest, I'm not really a huge fan of normal characters, I adore it when they have flaws, problems, and general maladies that literally prevent them from being "perfect". Loki was that sort of character, the fact that he's missing his tail and has his ears chewed up, while still being a ratlet, suggests a traumatic story behind him that draws me in. As a writer this sort of thing is like my catnip, absolutely irresistible. So I had to try to win this adorable piece of rat perfection, and completing this form will be basically one of the last things I do before going on hiatus <3 So you could expect, if I won, for there to be plenty of stories including him completed by the time I come back.
Rat Name:
Loki
-From Norse mythology, was a Trickster God associated with magic and fire. Thought it was the perfect name for this handsome fellow <3-
Personality: (Likes, dislikes, how they react to people, other rats, etc.)
Loki is something of a paranoid, skittish, and yet madly bold little rat. He's accumulated a plethora of nicknames over the years, with "Mad Hatter" being one of the more fondly used monikers that he goes by. It suits him too, he tends to get a little bit crazy and delusional at times, yet he consistently is known for having a good heart, and when it comes down to it he'll be there for you. In-so-far as his temperament around other rats goes.....he's anything but calm, snapping and squeaking madly, its unsafe to even allow him to SEE another rat. Oddly enough, he possesses no fear of predators, and has a fixation on cats in particular, liking to sit on the windowsill and peer out at the felines prowling below. He has more than once caused those feline hunters some angst, since its not something generally accepted among cats, to be watched by their prey. Strange as it may be, he has actually struck up a friendship with the old male tabby cat next door, and the two have enjoyed many ridiculous conversations with each other through the screen door. Still, if you value keeping your sanity, Loki's sanity, and all creatures near you safe, you won't let him near any other rats.
On a more emotional and intellectual level, Loki is rather level-headed and calm. He's able to keep himself and keep himself entertained, bu despite his inherent fear and hatred towards other rats, he's actually a very social and companionable creature. There's nothing he likes better than to tuck himself into Kat's arms and snooze there while she reads a book, watches tv, or does anything else like that. He also does quite well with dogs, and is even able to get along with Kat's huge German Shepard, who has come to accept Loki as a part of the family. Generally speaking Loki is highly intelligent, not only has he mastered opening jars of peanut butter without opposable thumbs, but he's also quite clever when it comes to other things as well. He wouldn't brag about his ability to read, but having watched and heard Kat read so many stories to him and others, well, he's picked up on a lot of things. And when Kat isn't looking he can sometimes be found, pawing through the latest literary tidbit his caretaker has left lying about. On that particular note, he loves being left alone now and then for short periods of time, it allows him to have a bit of "me time" whether for reading, catwatching, wandering around, or even playing around with Duke, Kat's German Shepard. Of course, Loki's mental instability, and immense paranoia and separation anxiety, make these moments few and far between. Still, as a whole, he's a very jolly and relaxed rat, capable of enjoying the finer things and life while still maintaining an appropriate amount of respect and reverence for the world around him.
Loki has an intense dislike for most human males, he sees them as a threat to his place in Kat's heart, and since he knows that she's a romantic, he also fears that she'd be taken advantage of. As a result he often will do his best to frighten or scare of other human males, though he does get along perfectly well with her male family members, a fact that is incredibly puzzling to him. When it comes to females.....he doesn't mind them, they're constant fussing and sympathetic words about his tail and ears, gets wearisome and annoys him, but he does secretly enjoy it on a baser level. When travelling, he enjoys the admiring and curious gazes most people offer him, and so long as they don't try to encroach on his relationship with Kat, he loves nothing more than to bask in the attention.
Medical Conditions:
Ordinary rats wouldn't generally be diagnosed with any particular mental disorder, but Loki isn't a normal rat. He suffers from chronic nightmares, horrific things that have him squeaking and shaking uncontrollably when in the grip of them. He also suffers from separation disorders and paranoia, which can only be abated by having his caretaker Kat nearby him. His separation anxiety has been eased to the point where he can go for about five hours a week without having Kat in the house, any longer than that and he is prone to losing his head and possibly even injuring himself, in the futile effort of finding Kat. His obsessive catwatching has also been tentatively thought to be a mental disorder, being a sort of block within his mind that prevents the correct mental cues to form, thus explaining his complete lack of fear around predators. Loki's greatest health concern would be his utter aversion, terror, and hatred of other rats. Scientists are unable to explain it, and though Kat knows some of the story behind his fear, there is little that can be done at this point in time.
Medical Solutions:
In order to assure that Loki has the highest quality of life possible, several health solutions were formulated and found, in order to help aid him in having a long and productive life. The nightmares are held at bay when he sleeps with Kat, so it was a relatively easy fix, with a cardboard box stuffed with tissues being kept beside her bed. Rat carrying cases allow Kat to take Loki with her when it appears that the five hour limit may be surpassed, leaving out a peanut butter jar also has proven to help, adding as much as two hours onto the normal time he can persevere through Kat's absences. The catwatching has no apparent solution, and Kat doesn't see the harm in it, so it is allowed. He is quite simply kept as far away as possible from other rats, for the safety and peace of mind of everybody involved.

Quirks: (Little things like "Enjoys sleeping on her back", "Loves hoarding candy wrappers", etc.)
* Loki has a knack for getting into peanut butter containers
* He can oft be found lounging about in a nest of tissue papers.
* He loves nothing better than to snuggle up to Kat during the long nights
* He has a weird habit of watching predators, particularly cats, and has been given the nickname "Loopy Loki" for his un-rat like behaviour.
What do you plan on doing with your rat? (Roleplay, Make art of, Hoard art of, etc.)
Several things really XD I'm currently working on several novel ideas, so there's a good chance of him popping up in there, particularly since I adore the history I've come up with for him -will be explained below in my story- I also would put him on my website, buy art of him -since I'm not a very good artist lol- and almost definitely use him in several short stories I plan on writing during my hiatus from the internet and CS. Its also highly likely that he'd appear in my signature or avatar, and possibly even a rat roleplay if I can get the muse going for it. All in all he'd be a beloved character, and even if he didn't appear all the time on CS, you can bet that I'd be using him in the stories I make up in my head during the day, when I'm down, bored, or whatever. I'm not keen on lying in order to make myself look good, so I really do want to emphasize that there is a chance that he wouldn't get used much here. I like to think he would but.....there's no guarantee. Still, I would love him and cherish him within my heart, and since my parents refuse to let me keep rodents as pets, he's be the next best thing <3
If you feel you can no longer care for your Rat, will you return it here to find a new home?
Yes, without a doubt. If I ever feel my characters/adoptables aren't getting enough attention I find them better homes <3 Though it shouldn't be a problem, he's an incredibly lovable creature, and I doubt I'd ever stop caring for him <3
Artwork/Story?
Loki's whiskers twitched slightly, his small body convulsing in brief spasms as he dreamed. It was the same as always, the constant stream of images, feelings, and disorientation, the havoc wreathing around him until up was down and down was up. A soft squeak escaped, but for once, after a long time of constant rescue, Kat wasn't there to wake him up and shelter him from the nightmares. It was more of a memory than anything else, that piece of his past that the scientists mulled over, the terrible day he came to fear those of his own kind, the day he lost his tail and tore his ears.
A she-rat, still nursing her only surviving offspring, nuzzled the brilliantly coloured ratlet with a pink nose. Her own mundane colours standing out in sharp contrast to the flaming pelt of her son. Nervously she lifted her nose to the air, but the scent of other rats soothed her, and she fell into a more restful stance. Her own kind, at least, would never turn against the two of them. Despite the fact that her little son was different, brighter, than the rest of them. Suddenly though a black head peered around the overhang they were sheltering beneath. Beady black rat-eyes regarded the two, and to her horror she saw disgust and malice grow across this other rat's face. Burying the thread of fear which threatened to explode, the mother tilted her head towards him, forcing her voice to sound neutral and unharried. "Greetings Blackscar, how goes the foraging?" Yet the other rat didn't seem interested in chatter, hissing out a stream of words, all in an angry breath, Loki's mother shrank away from the angry male. "You stupid female Celine, isn't it proof that such colourful offspring are not meant to exist, when all the others have died? Kill this one and be done with it, we can't have such abominations running with us, he'd give us away every time, alerting the predators and humans to us. Surely you've realized that!" But Celine had refused to give in to such thinking, and Blackscar must have seen her determination. Looming above her, a powerful male used to having his way and inflicting damage, Blackscar lowered his voice to just a low whisper, softer and infinitely more dangerous. "Kill him yourself or I will kill you both." Celine's whisked twitched, and her coal-black eyes glistened with fear and anxiety. The young mother had endured many trials in her short life, the birth of her brightly coloured children being one of them, yet this, the threat of death from her leader and mate.....it was too much. And yet the bond between mother and child was strong. Though her little tiger was yet to be named, a tradition upheld by the street rats, who never named their offspring until they passed three months of age, she felt a deep love for him, and harboured the hope that he would live to be a strong and capable rat. Yet she loved her mate too and, up until this moment, thought he loved her as well. Trying desperately once more, she schooled her voice to a tender tone. "But Blackscar, this is your child! He's strong, like you, and he has your nose. Please, I beg of you, he'll do just fine on his own, trust me, believe in him. After all, he's your son, and-" But Blackscar cut her off with a heavy thump of his tail, "That MONSTROSITY is not my son. He's a-a-a " The big black rat's eyes glittered cruelly and he leaned down so that his words floated strongly into Celine's ears "a MISTAKE." Pain rocketed through Celine, and for the first time, full bloomed panic and fear spread through her. If Blackscar really did view his son as a mistake., which he obviously did, then both mother and son were in grave danger. Her teeth chattered together nervously, and Blackscar seemed content to let Celine come to her own decision. After a chaotic whirlwind of emotions had subsided, she felt only two things, an intense need to protect her son, and utter calm. Turning to her vibrant little ratlet, she felt her heart break for him. "Run little Loki, I shall join you soon." And with a fearsome screech his mother leapt at Blackscar who was wholly unprepared for the attack. Though in the end it was only Loki's unusually high intelligence which saved him, for he vaulted out of the little burrow without a moments hesitation, knowing better than to squeak as he madly dashed away, the horrific sounds of his mother and father fighting to the death ringing in his ears.
All the same, Loki was only a young ratlet, and with his brightly coloured coat, he knew it would be a struggle to get anywhere far. His only chance was to hide out and pray his mother would find him again. It was just as he was about to slip between a thin grate, through which no other rat could fit, that he heard scurrying feet pattering behind him. Naive hope pricked at Loki's young heart, and with hope and love in his eyes the young rat turned expectantly. The next images would stay with him for the rest of his life, his father, Blackscar, was right behind him, black eyes crazed with killing madness. The black rats muzzle was coated in sticky red blood, and his breath reeked of the scent of Celine, yet Loki knew, ill and sick as it made him feel, that this was not the warm scent of her pelt he could smell, but the scent of her blood. And even as Blackscar's own blood dripped from his torn pelt to mingle with Celine's, he lunged at his son, bent on killing the little "mistake". He would have done it too, but Loki managed, in just a split second, to lunge forward quick enough that Blackscar's deadly bite didn't sever his spine, instead it sliced through his still-thin tail, and Loki collapsed, screeching, through the narrow slates of the grate.
Loki couldn't say how long he lay there, curled in a puddle of his own blood, squeaking pitifully with the pain, but eventually the all-consuming misery faded, and the pain in his tail faded to a dull throb. Blackscar was still above, Loki could hear him, muttering and pacing, occasionally going so far as to frantically attempt to wiggle inside the little hiding place Loki had found. But the little rat knew that staying there any longer was perilous, there was every chance that Blackscar would find a way in and finish what he had started. Not to mention the fact that there was no food here for Loki, really the little ratlet was doomed to death unless he could escape. So it was that he started to make his way over to explore the back of the little hollow he had found. To his surprise and relief there was a tunnel, and without further ado little Loki began to scamper down the tunnel. It wasn't long before Blackscar noticed the disappearance of his son, and the horrible racket of Blackscar's eerie wailing and shrieking would never be forgotten by Loki. As it was he only just managed to escape out the furthest end of the tunnel, and through the resulting grate, before his father's paw flew out from the slats, dripping with blood. He had forced himself through the bar's, heedless of the consequences to his own body, and was oozing with blood, mouth dripping with saliva. Loki's ear was hooked by a claw and tore painfully, but the little ratlet was still far from being safe. Knowing that he had to outrun the older rat, who was even now squeezing himself through the bars, or face a gruesome death.
Just then Blackscar squeezed through and Loki stumbled painfully, and turned with a horrified squeak to stare in horror and fear at his insane father, who was even now bearing down on him with a gleeful look. But then it happened, a cat, the sworn enemy of rats everywhere, materialized, and with only a brief glance at little Loki the large tabby sprang at Blackscar. Killing the giant male rat before he even had time to register what was happening. During this time Loki managed to scramble to his paws and escape, running blindly down the lane until he stumbled upon the doorstep of a small house, and it was there, exhausted and weak, that Loki collapsed into an exhausted sleep, come hell or high water.
Loki stirred awake, still shaking slightly. Yet the end of the dream helped to soothe the scarring memories of his earliest days. The fact that his collapse on the doorstep had led to Kat finding and saving him made the entire thing worthwhile. Though there were always days when he couldn't help but wish that things had been different. That his mother had survived, his father had loved him, and he had lived the ordinary life of a rat. Instead he found himself being altogether extraordinary. A diamond in the rough, that was what Kat called him, and he really did like to believe it. To be honest Loki had a feeling that there would be many more adventures to come. And if Morty, the next door neighbours cat, was right about anything, and Loki felt that he was, then such an unusual rat as himself was bound to find himself up to his whiskers in trouble. And Loki wouldn't have it any other way.
