Sadly, Alex was gone, and you'd think Zora'd be happy, for how much he hated him. But Alex's love continued to haunt him....even after death.
"Zora--"
"No! Shut up, I don't want to hear it!" The small, fragile body of the black wolf was stalking away from the larger, much more tougher, white one. There were tears threatening to creep from the black wolf's eyes as he spat out his insults. "I hate you, do you know that, you smelly, pathetic pup-wolf! Why can't you just leave me alone? I hate you, Alex!"
The white wolf stared at him blankly, taking a few steps forward. "Zora, I love you."
"Shut up."
"Why are you so dead set against me?"
"J-just leave me alone..." Zora's body quivered as Alex nuzzled his neck comfortingly.
"I love you too much to leave. Even if you hate me...I'll still stay by your side." Zora blinked and jerked back suddenly.
"You just don't know when to give up." And with that, his beloved turned tail and fled. Alex took a few steps after.
"Zora, wait!" But it was too late; the teen wolf was racing away, into the thick trees. He broke into a run, trying to keep up. Why did he have to love a stubborn one? There were plenty of wolves he could have loved, but why this one? So many bad reasons to love Zora: he was stubborn, a hothead, short-tempered, weak, scrawny, a runt, proud, a moron...yet he still liked him, despite all of that. Maybe too much. He drove Zora away with his love, and outshone him with his own traits. Maybe that's why...
There was a startled yelp. Alex stopped in his tracks, his ears straining forward to listen. Nothing at first--
There was a roar. It was so loud, it took the wolf by surprise. Leaves shook on the trees even after it died away. But what had set Alex's blood running cold was the yelp. Something told Alex that Zora was in danger. A low growl rumbled through his throat. No one harmed Zora! Plunging through the thicket and ferns, he dragged himself into a clearing, only to see his Zora cowering beneath a black bear. Black and black bared teethed at each other, daring the opponent to make a move, to land a blow that would lock them into battle. And neither one would back out; Zora was too stubborn, and the bear was defending its land. Soon someone was going to snap, and Zora would die by default. So at the last minute, when he saw Zora snap at the bear's arm, Alex sprang forward.
The bear swatted the smaller wolf away just when the other sank his canines into his shoulder. It grunted in pain and bucked wildly, flinging Alex off. The wolf stood up, and the bear slashed downward. There was crack, a stab of pain, then nothing when Alex slid back down. Zora said something in the background, but he couldn't hear it. It was drowned out by another roar. A shadow engulfed him. I'm doomed.
A flash of black suddenly smacked into the bear, a snarl of fury. There was a sound of ripping fur, a bellow, yelping, and then a grunt. Something knocked into Alex's spine and he squealed. Something heavy fell on him, something smoldered him. More snarling, fur ripping. The something pummeled Alex's body before finally, he saw it. The bear was fleeing now, a gash in its face. There was a startling absence of an eye. Zora sprung over Alex's body, and bared his teeth at the creature, his muzzle flecked with red substance. The bear growled lowly, before turning tail and fleeing. Zora kept his snarl going, but staggered away from Alex. He was out of breath.
Alex tried to stand up, but his back legs were limp and lifeless. He fell with a sigh. The first thing his beloved could say were insults.
"Y-you fool! Why? Why'd you do that? I could have saved my own hide!" As Zora berated the dying creature, Alex smiled softly.
"Do you...really...believe that, love? If I hadn't distracted it, you'd been the one lying here."
"I--" The wolf broke off as the massive snowy white head dropped on the ground, a shudder taking hold of him. Zora prodded Alex's muzzle with his own. "H-hey! Get up, you're not dying on me!"
"I'm afraid I am." Alex coughed roughly; blood splattered on the ground. "That bear took a lot out of me..."
"No...no he didn't--"
"Zora, look at me: I'm spitting up blood, I have a gash in my side, and I can't feel my legs. I'm dying!" Another cough. "I don't regret it though...It does me good to know you're still alive."
Zora bared his teeth at the fading wolf. "Don't die on me!"
"Don't tell me not to die...we're all born to die."
"But...but..."
Silence.
"...Zora?" Alex couldn't see now. His eyes were glazed over, unseeing, blank. Blind. Said wolf's name leaned in closely, so his warm breath stirred the white fur.
"What?"
"Do you still hate me...?"
"...I--yes."
A cough. "You hesitated. Haha--" Cough. "...Do me a favor. That's an order."
There was resentment in Zora's voice. "What?"
"Don't you forget me."
"Excuse me?" The smaller wolf's eyes narrowed. Alex seemed to have regain a bit of sight, he was staring straight at him. His voice was grim, lost all traces of grace.
"Don't forget me."
"I--what?"
There was a long sigh. Alex died, right at Zora's paws. And that was it. Many would fantasize about grand last words, an amazing speech, a long-awaited answer, maybe a confession. Alex chose none. He just simply died. But it was enough to set Zora into a cold silence.
At first, he thought Alex was gathering words to say, and had waited patiently. Then, doubt grew. He tilted his head.
"Alex?"
No response.
A more panicky, "Alex?"
That's when it sunk in: he was dead. The wolf leaped to his paws and began prodding the body frantically. "Hey, I said don't die!" Alex didn't stir. Zora jumped on him. No grunts of surprise. Nothing. The body was still warm, but there was a certain stiffness...
"No, no, no, no..." Zora moaned softly, then more loudly, "No!" It was a shriek, "No!"
Dead, dead, dead, dead.
All alone, in the forest, at night.
But there was an absence in his heart.
The one he hated was dead.
And he was in utter despair.
A lone howl began to crawl out of his mouth, a sad cry for his former friend's return.
There.
