Indigo glanced at Jack, trying to remember how long he had been on the crew. It seemed like he had been there forever, but of course that wasn't true. They had picked him up because they needed somebody who could cook after... She stopped herself, knowing that if she opened that door in her mind she wouldn't be able to take another step. "I've seen some awful things, Jack," she said, looking past him and suddenly sounding so old, so tired. "I've seen naval officers tie pirates up and cut them to pieces while they were still alive. I'm sure that I can handle a murder." Now she was just trying to sound brave, and she hoped that she was doing a good job of it. She didn't know if she would be able to stand the sight of Sonja, and it wasn't the woman's condition that worried her. She just didn't want to see one of the last members from the old crew laid in the ground.

Jack shook his head. "Whoever murdered her gave her a blow to the head then shoved something into the wound, most likey a finger, while she was still alive." He explained, choosing his words carefully. "As cook, I have to kill and butcher the animals we have onboard when I need to use them. I've seen people die more than I care to count. But this....." He drew a shaky breath. "I swear it will haunt me for years to come." The sight of butchering a dead animal, or seeing his old crewmates die was nothing to finding the unmoving body of Sonja on the ground in the place they thought was safe.

"I think I had better see for myself, Jack," replied Indigo, glancing first at him and then at the road. "But... wait a moment." Going to the edge of the path, the captain bent down to retrieve something from the sand. It was a long stick, splintery at one end but smoothed by rocks and waves at the others. Holding onto it with her remaining arm, she tested it against the ground and found it steady. It would serve as a walking stick until she got the hang of balancing. Then she asked, "This way?" and gestured up the path with a nod of her head. It lead up towards the town and then forked two ways, one going out to the countryside and the other leading to the stand of buildings and shops, halls and infirmaries.

Jack nodded, feeling that if she wanted to see her, she could. No doubt the rest of the crew will have already cleaned her up; they wouldn't want the change of clothes to get stained with blood. So they would just be waiting for him to return with the change of clothes. The captain wasn't even supposed to be there, but he wasn't going to complain. Indigo and Sonja had been crewmates for a long time, and it was only fair that she saw her put to rest. Shaking himself out of his musings, he nodded again.
"Aye." He stepped forwards and his foot sank into a small ditch in the path. The sudden movement caused a wave of dizziness to wash over him from his injury yesterday, and he grasped his head, swaying.

Indigo saw Jack stumble out of the corner of her eye and stopped, turning slightly in order to look at him. "I think," she said, "That you're going to need this more than I am." She held out the stick she had picked up, angling it she he wouldn't have to reach far for the blasted thing. "What on earth happened? Are all of the crew injured one way or another?"

Jack pushed his away, not daring to shake his head. Taking deep breaths, he slowly pulled his foot out of the ditch and set it on firm ground. His head was still spinning. "Not all of us... Tessa-Rose; she was with Sonja when she died. Someone took her to the imfirmary." He hoped they did. "Yesterday, Emerald decided that she wanted to ride a horse, but Tessa didn't know. She shot off her pistol and the horse bolted. I, uh, ran after her and ended up falling head-first into one of the stalls." His cheeks flushed pink as he remembered the incident.

"Goddess blast them-!" cursed Indigo quietly, pulling the walking stick back and planting it solidly in the dirt of the road. "Funeral or not, I'm going to have a word with all of them about their foolishness." She struck out faster now, walking as quickly as she dared to without losing her balance. "Come on," she growled, not looking back to see if Jack was keeping up. One crewmember dead and four injured, and there hadn't even been a battle. When she reached the fork in the road, she saw a herd of footprints heading along the rightmost path. It led out to the countryside, and perhaps a mile down the way sat a white fence. Beyond that, there was a pasture, another fence, and a small farmhouse.

Blinking rapidly for a few moments, Jack let his hands fall away from his head and walked at a steady pace after her, starting slow and then increasing his pace when the dizziness subsided. She certainly looked angry.
Moving the bag to his other shoulder, he turned up the fork to the countryside, not speaking. For one reason, he didn't know what to say. For the other, there was nothing to say. If the captain wanted a word with then all, then she could have it.
