The way I see rarity is this:

2 VC = 1 C
2 C = 1 UC
4-6 UC(depending on year, wishlist, if i want to trade, etc.) = 1 R
2 R = 1 VR

But not everyone's guidelines are like that.

yeah.. mine are different i usually like to go the same rarity, unless they are more populaar.. like the moonswirl for the blue balloon? nope. XD

I used to think like that. But sometimes, the "Rare" and "Very Rare" gaps can be so large... :C
For instance, two Rare Advent '08 cats cannot get you a Galaxy dog. But two commons can usually get you an Uncommon. C:
I hate when people who trade with me think like that, though. >.>; You know, when they think 30 Very Common pets equal a Very Rare pet...

:lol: Sure, I'll happily trade away the rare cat that I adopted, not two two hours ago, for a bunch of uncommons, and commons. *note sarcasm* You know, because I'm sure I can't get any better, not that she's for trading in the first place.
