The server broke, (would have gotten a '10 butterfly wolf) and there were only around 500 left when I got there. Flicked through a few pages of recent pets, and managed to nab him:

i have a question, how do you know what pet is in pound before it is open? look into adoption group or queue or queue2? please help me!!

Everyone had the same problems. The server broke when I tried to refresh the first time for me, with 1300 something pets in the pound.
Later, when I was able to get on again, there were still 1300 something pets in.^^
