Nope. Made it up. Morgoth actually isn't that scary on screen, but in person, he is probably as scary as Hitler on steroids.

Wow. So he must have grown that mustache out quite a lot. The steroids probably made it grow quite bushy and fluffy.

Well, yeah. That would make him significantly less scary. Likewise, this one kid in sixth grade kept telling everyone he was Santa, which made the real Santa significantly more scary.
I'm working on completing FOTR for the fourth time and I just noticed that when Frodo was "stabbed" by the cave troll, it took everyone about 20 seconds to figure out,
"Oh, looks like Frodo, the key part of our mission, has been brutally stabbed by something fifty times bigger than he is. Maybe we should do something."
