The blond stood behind the brunette, her long arms wrapped around the other girl's waist.

"Say it." she whispered in a sultry voice. Rachel shivered at the feel of Quinn's warm breath on her neck. She whimpered.

Quinn removed one hand from Rachel's waist and raked her fingers through the smaller girl's think brown locks. "Say it." she whispered again, sending shivers down Rachel's spine.

Rachel's entire body trembled as Quinn's lithe fingers ran through her hair again and again.

"Say it."

Rachel closed her eyes.

"I love you."

She looked at him reproachfully, brown eyes wide.
'Why do you do it, Mach? Those poor, poor animals!'
He shifted uncomfortably. 'I'm a scientist, Bear, it's what I do.'
'You don't have to.'
'How else can I make a living?'
'Use... Use humans, or something', she stammered defiantly.
'And who on earth would agree to being tested on?' He looked at her piercingly.

The office was empty, but through a one-way window Darcy could see a brightly illuminated room that contained a steel table and two chairs. Her stranger was sitting in one of them. He looked curiously nonchalant, despite the fact that his left ankle was handcuffed to one of the table's legs. He was leaning back in his chair, fingers pressed delicately together as he surveyed his surroundings. Then, to her surprise and slight horror, he looked right at her... and winked.

Darcy Lewis + Loki = one hell of a team. I don't ship them as a couple, by the way.

"Kid, you have no idea."
I pursed my lips, narrowing my eyes. "I'm not a kid."
Quinn chuckled. "Oh, Demetri. Naive little Demetri." he said, the taunt of a sigh on his lips. Almost like grim amusement. He was silent for a few moments, as if thinking, then his smirk disappeared all at once. "You don't know what it's like."
"Yeah, I do!" I hated it when he called me a kid, or called me stupid, or called me naive. Even though he often times used the label "kid" in a way that was basically as affectionate as he could get. I also hated it when he insisted that I didn't know anything about what he went through on a daily basis. But I had thorns - not just metaphorically - and wings. I was always excluded and hated, to put it in a hideously understated way. It was so much worse. Surely he didn't know worse than me - He was popular, loved. He had no imperfections throughout his body. In fact, he was beautiful, handsome. He had everything anybody could ever want.
He sighed gently. "Listen, Demetri, you don't know. You just don't know. Nobody knows. Nobody cares, nobody has the time."
I took a step towards him. "I care, I have time." I said quietly, reaching my hand out to touch his face.
Quinn smacked it away as if it would burn him. He shook his head. "No. It's better this way. I'm not dragging you into my problems."
"But I want to help."
"No."
I frowned, crossing my arms. "Why not?"
"Because you wouldn't understand." he replied after a moment.
"Quit saying that!" I snarled, pushing him backwards gently. I didn't have the nerve to actually hurt him, even slightly. "I'm not a stupid little kid! I'm younger than you by a year. That doesn't make me an idiot!" I growled, fuming.
Quinn watched me for a moment, remaining silent. He knew me all too well; He knew that if he gave me a few moments, I'd simmer down.
And that's exactly what happened. I calmed down, breathing heavily. "I'm sorry."
"I know." he said, looking away. "I don't think you're stupid, Demetri. You're intelligient. By saying you wouldn't understand, I'm not saying you're an idiot. I'm saying that it's complex and difficult and to be honest, I don't even understand it myself." his voice was gentle, but his harsh blue eyes were not. He always had that wall around himself to protect him - I'd tried to help, to get him to let me in, if not tear it down. My efforts were fruitless.
"I just wish you'd tell me what's bothering you." I said absently, wrapping one arm around his back, my head on his chest, and toying with one of the buttons on his coat.
I felt him cringe back from the affection, but he allowed it. "I don't want to drag you down with me." he murmured.
I was surprised to feel his arms around me. Never did he allow such affection from anybody - he had only just recently been allowing it from me - and I didn't even think it was possible that he could return it. I pulled away a little to look in his eyes, then resumed the embrace. "But I want to help you."
Quinn was silent for a long while. After a moment, I pulled away to look at him, to see what was wrong. His eyes were distant, like his body was here but his mind was somewhere else.
"Quinn?" I asked softly, wanting a reply.
After a few more minutes, he closed his eyes. I felt him exhale deeply, over my shoulder. He didn't pull away from me like I had assumed. Whenever I wanted something of him he usually just left so as to avoid it. No, he actually held me tighter, like he was afraid that the cold night air would blow me away. When I looked up, he had a soft smile, one that was practically sweet, but depressed and grim at the same time.
"There's no hope left for me, kid."
