That was a day that luck seemed to shine for Sapphire. Normally, Ren was constantly watching anyone he was near for the slightest change of expression, of any sign that they might have recognized him. That day, he was tired and his sense was clouded by the prospect of a game. Mark had openly said that he wanted Ren dead, thus ensuring that Ren's attention was focused on the other boy rather then, ironically, the person who had actually recognized him. If he knew, things would be happening very differently. Even if he had nothing against the girl, killing her would be a necessity. Ren had yet to have to do that, but there was always a first time for everything.
Ren gave a small, only visible to those who had trained themselves to look, jump when he looked up to see Sapphire locking her gaze with his. Telepathy sadly did not decide to make an appearance at that moment, and he did not catch the though that she wanted him to know. Instead, Ren observed her strange eyes for a moment, then looked away. He did not like that look this girl was giving him; it was unnerving him to no end. So his wonderful opportunity to get away arose when she described the game. Ren knew the area like the back of his hand, all it would take was her looking in the other direction for a few moments and he could be long gone. He would never have to explain, doubting he would ever see Sapphire again. Ren offered a small, very much fake, smile at her enthusiasm. The instant she closed her eyes, Ren darted a few feet away. Ten seconds wasn't enough to get away, but it was enough to find a good place to hide. And once Sapphire went off to look elsewhere should she, he would be long gone. Selecting a tree that was still holding onto thick, dense leaves, Ren hoisted himself up without a sound. With any luck, he was safely invisible from anywhere but below. And it would be easy to get out of, just a little leap.
But as with most things in the young king's life, it didn't go as he wished. The cold night air mixed with his wavering health did not allow him silence. However much he tried to retrain it, about ten seconds in, the sound of a short series of hacking coughs rang through the air. Crap. Ren swore in his mind, taking a few struggling breaths. There went staying hidden.
