[Here we gooo... Is it alright that Augustus is a little older? I haven't been very fond of RPing teenagers lately. Also, I don't use pictures and I hope that's okay.]
☬I am a Person☬
☬Basics☬
Name☬ Augustus Flinch
Age☬ 20
Gender☬ Male
Date Of Birth☬ November 4th 1989
☬Appearance☬
Hair☬ Augustus’s hair is completely straight and black in color. It is short and neatly cut, ending just below his ears, and has a tendency to get quite greasy unless it is washed daily. Augustus wouldn’t allow it to, of course, especially not with his mother there to give him grief over it.
Eyes☬ Augustus has deep-set eyes and uninteresting brown irises that are dark and uninviting. They constantly appear to be judging somebody or something.
Body☬ Augustus is thin and frail, and quite short for his age. His body is bony and gaunt, lacking the grace that he was expected to have, which makes his mother look like she had swallowed a lemon whenever he’s within her line of sight [but that doesn’t bother him very much as it is her usual expression]. However, he has perfect posture, beaten into him years ago by his governess and, later on, his tutor.
Facial features☬ Augustus has a round face, with features more resembling a person in their early teens. He can easily be mistaken as being younger than he is just by his facial features alone. He has a small mouth with thin lips, and a childish, upturned nose. There are noticeable dark bags under his eyes, and his eyebrows are quite thick and dark. He has almost no eyelashes because he keeps pulling them out, mostly out of habit and when he is frustrated.
Scars☬ A large one in the form of teethmarks circling around his wrist, from an unpleasant encounter with one of his father’s dogs.
Body modifications☬ None. He would get a slap on the face from his mother if he even asked about piercing his ears. Any tattoos would make her become apoplectic.
☬Getting Personal☬
Personality☬ On the surface, Augustus is calm and patient, but very judgmental of people, and a little unapproachable. His shell is hard to crack and he would rather it stay that way, undamaged and keeping him safe.
On the inside, he is much different. He is, first and foremost, suspicious of everything. His father’s paranoia seems to have passed on to him, and he isn’t shy about expressing this. He pushes people away in fear that they might do something to him, something irreversible. He hates how lonely he feels at times, but has become used to the feeling after spending his whole life at home with only a select group of people that sometimes kept him company.
Augustus is very curious. He prefers to try things out for himself instead of observing others try, and this has led him to trouble very often. A dangerous encounter with his father’s dog comes to mind. He learns pretty fast though, so making a mistake once in enough for him. He doesn't rush into things head-first, and thinks things over before he does them. But he often misjudges things, and makes a lot of mistakes because of this.
He is studious and hardworking, and knows when to bow down to his betters. He respects all people older than him, whether they have proved themselves worthy of his respect or not. However, he isn’t as respectful towards people who are younger than him, and even considers them as being lower than him in extreme cases. This is only if they have been disrespectful to him, or if they have done something stupid in front of him. He isn’t fond of childishness, something passed on from his tutor. While he doesn’t go out of his way to confront people who annoy him, he will give them a cold shoulder and try to avoid them as much as possible.
Augustus doesn’t prove much of a fight in the face of a verbal confrontation, or even in a psychical one, for that matter. He prefers to flee rather than fight, and if that isn’t possible he will let his opponent win easily, and then retreat somewhere to lick his wounds. He does harbor a grudge for a very long time, and might never even forgive those who have wronged him.
Augustus has an obsession with taxidermy, and dead things in general. He isn’t repulsed by things that other’s might find disgusting, and will gladly observe an animal’s insides for hours. And speaking of not being disgusted by things, Augustus will eat just about anything. If it’s set before him and edible, he will eat it. He has a fondness of food that overrides even his love of taxidermy, and much like a starving dog would bite at the hand that tries to take it’s food away, he is protective of the things he eats. This is the only time that he will stand up and fight for himself.
Augustus has pretty gray morals, proved by him being nonplused by his pet’s death. He is fiercely protective of those he loves, but wouldn’t rush out to help a stranger in need, no matter how severe their troubles are. He has no problem with doing things that border on being illegal, as long as it doesn’t get him or his family in trouble.
Being constantly surrounded by shadows in his childhood, Augustus has grown quite dependent on them, and seems to attract them like bees to honey.
History☬ Augustus' family could be considered to be normal, if a little old fashioned, but of course, there are all kinds of things that one could unearth if they only bother to dig a little deeper.
Augusts’ father was a decent human being. He cared for his whole family equally, and was strict but just. He was kind and put his family’s needs before his own. He was a good man. But what Augustus couldn’t fully grasp at all what the fact that the man genuinely loved his wife. Augusts’ Mother was a very unlikeable woman, in his opinion, as strict as his father but lacking his compassion. She cared for her children just as any mother would, but rarely showed it, especially towards Augustus. However, if there was one thing Augusts was grateful for during his earlier years, was that his father completely forbade his mother from raising her children. Oh, she was allowed to take care of their basic needs, but everything else was left to their governess. His father would sometimes take over the reigns when he thought that there were things the governess was unfit to teach his children, but otherwise he left everything up to her, preferring to stay as a distant, ever-watchful figure in the background of his children’s lives.
When Augustus was eight, he was gifted with a pet for his birthday, a small parakeet. He took care of it like any dedicated owner would, and even taught it to stay calmly on his shoulder and played with it. But he would often sit in front of it's cage, staring at it as if trying to figure out the way it ticked.
However, the parakeet didn't last very long, because of a childish mistake...
Due to it’s constant attempts to escape, even after being somewhat trained by Augustus, Augustus sought advice from his father. At the man’s suggestion, Augustus tried to clip the bird’s wings. His father had obviously meant for them to take the parakeet to a professional who knew what they were doing, but Augustus was dead-set on doing it himself. While everyone in the house was asleep, Augustus snuck out of his room and took the scissors hidden in one of the cupboards in the kitchen. He then attempted to clip his parakeet’s wings himself. But the poor bird refused to cooperate, and died of undisclosed, but obvious reasons. Augustus would later claim to his family that the scissors had slipped.
The parakeet’s death introduced Augustus to the grimmer side of life, but it also made him question himself. He never told his parents of the mixed emotions its death ignited inside him. And it was probably for the best.
During the long span between his tenth and fourteenth birthday, Augustus was a diligent student. When he turned ten, a tutor took over the duties of his governess, while she continued to care for his two younger sisters. Augustus’s teacher was a no-nonsense man, and despised slackers with all of his being. He taught Augustus, among other things, about being hardworking and honest. The tutor was not shy about dealing out psychical punishments, as small as they were. A few raps on the knuckles with a ruler was more than enough to chase any thoughts of misbehavior out of Augustus’ head.
He developed his habit of picking at his eyelashes when he was twelve, something which worried his father and annoyed his mother. Whenever she saw him and was sure that nobody was around, she would give him a strong pinch to the cheek as a punishment. It was nothing severe, but it stung like hell. Augustus also developed another.... habit. He had always found comfort in food when younger, sneaking around his governess to swipe a cookie or two from the jar; always finishing his plate, even if he was served something that made his twin sisters gag in disgust. He would even take most of their portions when his parents weren’t looking. This love for food evolved into something more. Just like his eyelash-plucking habit, Augustus sought food whenever he was upset. Soon, he began eating compulsively, which frightened his parents a little when they finally noticed. However, he never seemed to gain any weight, and instead continued to eat whatever was put in front of him without pause. He wasn’t picky in the least, and even admitted to himself that he would be willing to eat anything. Meat was especially sweet to him, although he played no favorites.
With his father’s permission, Augustus bought another pet for his fifteenth birthday. A regal cockatoo, who he named Prince. Prince wasn't like Augusts’ parakeet. He snapped at the boy’s fingers and flapped his wings frantically whenever Augustus tried to get near him. Augustus got multiple scratches on his hands whenever he stubbornly tried to take Prince out of his cage, if only to clean it. The bird seemed genuinely afraid of him, and Augustus didn't like that one bit.
A year passed, but Prince refused to cooperate with Augustus. One day, the bird went too far. When the young man attempted to to take the cockatoo out of his cage, he attacked Augusts’ face, leaving bloody scratches wherever his talons touched Augusts’ skin. Defenseless, Augustus could only bat at the bird with his arms until a hit struck true. Prince hit the wall and slid down to the ground, dead.
Afterwards Augustus composed himself, cleaned his face as best as he could, and ran to his father with the cockatoo in his hands. At first, his father was alarmed. However, Augustus easily managed to convince the man that the bird had died of old age, that it's little heart just couldn't take it any more. "You know how birds are, father," he had said "their lifespans surely are the shortest of all domesticated animals." and his father had dubiously accepted this explanation. Looking back on it, Augustus knows that his father hadn't believed him. But what has passed, has passed.
Augustus’ father then offered to do something that would change Augustus, for better or for worse. He took the dead bird to a taxidermist, and this sparked a whole new obsession in his son.
Taxidermy was a subject that Augustus was hesitant to approach at the beginning. After all, nothing good could come from preserving dead animals. But soon, his curiosity got the better of him. He returned to the man who his parrot was taken to once, then again, and again, and again.... After a lot of mulling over the subject, he decided that he intended to pursue this line of work. He asked the taxidermist many questions, and even requested to watch the man work. The taxidermist wasn’t very pleased to be answering Augustus’ questions, and felt that letting some brat watch him work was out of the question, but after endless badgering from Augustus he gave in.
Augustus soon began visiting the man regularly, and was accepted as a sort-of helper. He never did any of the taxidermy work himself, but was taught a lot of things by observation. In the meantime, he read as much as he could. He shirked his other studies to study animal anatomy in secret, and read any book on taxidermy that he was able to get his hands on.
One day, Augustus was offered a rare chance to do what he had wanted to do ever since learning about taxidermy. A small bird had slammed into his window, and fallen into their garden. Augustus went out to to retrieve it, and after a long search carried the bird up to his room. Locking the door, but not before retrieving what he felt were the necessary tools, he studied the bird on his desk. What followed was a messy procedure, which proved nothing more than that Augustus had no problem with dead animal’s insides. After a colossal failure, he was left once again staring at the bird on his desk.
When Augusts was nineteen, there was a drastic and important change in his life. Now before going into this, a fact should be known. For all of his kindness and fairness, Augusts’ father was a very paranoid man. So paranoid, that he needed four fully trained dogs to guard his house. The dogs he owned were violent and territorial, and Augustus could swear that his father hadn’t trained them properly. Augustus had gotten too close to one of them once, and had ended up with a large scar on his wrist in the form of teeth, courtesy of the large doberman. It was the grim news that was delivered by his mother’s scream in the morning that made him realize that his suspicions must have been correct. His father had been mauled to death by his own dogs. Freed from their cages, the dogs had escaped the house the first chance they got.
Augustus’ mother didn’t waste much time bemoaning the death of her husband, and took this chance to take over her children’s lives, like she felt that she should have done from the beginning. The first thing she did was fire the tutor, and push the still-grieving Augusts to find a job. She didn’t seem to particularly care what it was, so Augustus took this chance to apply for a taxidermy apprenticeship. However, his feeling and thoughts still in a disarray from his father’s sudden death, he was followed by trouble wherever he went, and this trouble came in the form of shadows.
Augustus had been surrounded by shadows since before he even knew how to talk. He had never said a word about them to his mother or father after an incident where he had been accused of lying. The shadows had been there for him, and had kept him company when he had felt miserable. They were the world to him.
The trouble began when Augustus started talking to the shadows while at work. At first, there were only a few slips, a word here and there when he thought that nobody was looking. Those evolved into full-blown conversations, often one-sided. Augustus was never aware that his tutor was watching him. One day, he came home to find the man in his house talking quietly with his parents. His bags had been packed and were waiting for him in the hallway. Then the man noticed him, looked him straight in the eye, and said what would ring in Augustus’ head for days to come.
“You know, my daughter was sent to The White Room, and she was fixed right up. Don’t worry, you’ll be too.”
