Save the....Spiders?

Postby Cinereus » Thu Feb 11, 2010 3:46 pm

There will be a large amount of spider images in this thread. If pictures of spiders bother you, then by all means, don't read it.

They say that when you kill a spider, it rains. However, everyone seems to kill these creatures anyway - they are thought to be worthless compared to "cute and fuzzy" animals. I'm here to say that there's more to the animal kingdom than wolves, horses, and snow leopards.

Spider Conservation in the U.S.

Spiders, like many other invertebrates, have traditionally suffered a lack of attention from conservation professionals and the general public....However, when viewed as an assemblage, spiders may play an important role in stabilizing or regulating insect populations because they are one of the most numerous insectivores and exhibit a wide variety of lifestyles and foraging strategies...Additionally, spiders are an important food source for birds, lizards, wasps and other animals. In a study of trunk arthropods, spiders provided a relatively constant food source throughout the year for bark-gleaning birds (Peterson et al. 1989). Hogstad (1984) demonstrated that spiders were a primary winter food source for goldcrests (Regulus regulus). Also, spider silk is important to bird species for nest building; 24 of 42 families of passerine birds and nearly all species of hummingbird depend on silk from spiders and caterpillars for nest construction (Hansel 1993).

Yeah, that's right, spiders matter. They're not just there to creep you out, they are an integral part of the ecosystem. If they were to disappear completely, it's liable the entire food chain in some regions could break down. When apex predators die out, things get messed up and the prey flourishes, but things are liable to stabilize. When the prey dies out, the predators go with them, taking out an entire group of links in the food chain so that stabilization takes much longer. Think of it like a stack of oranges. The oranges on bottom are probably pretty bruised and not as beautiful as the ones on top, but if you take one from the bottom, the entire stack tumbles, because those oranges support it.

A major obstacle for spider conservation is a lack of public support, possibly due to fears and ignorance. For example, in a survey asking whether participants would favor the protection of an endangered spider if it meant increased costs to an energy development project, only 34% of those surveyed said yes, while a bird, cougar, crocodile, plant, and snake fared more favorably (Kellert 1986). Fears can be addressed through pointing out that only a few easily identifiable species pose a threat to humans. By stressing beauty and interesting behaviors and qualities, attitudes towards these invertebrates may change (Robinson 1991).

Spiders can in fact be beautiful. Unless you're an arachnophobe (which most people aren't, even though they think they are :P - you just need to get past the eight legs and too many eyes creep-out factor), there are actually many very striking specimens.

Currently Endangered/Vulnerable Species
Spruce-fir moss spider (Microhexura montivaga)
Dolloff cave spider (Meta dolloff)
Fen Raft spider (Dolomedes plantarius)
Kauai cave wolf spider (Adelocosa anops)
Katipo (Latrodectus katipo)
Mexican Redknee Tarantula (Brachypelma smithi)

Any other spider lovers around here? 8D I can't possibly be the only one.

P.S. Scorpions are awesome, too. Arachnids and insects in general are just completely underrated.

I won't lie, spiders do creep me out a little, but there are some truly complex and remarkable specimens. My family's of the 'trap and release' variety most of the time when it comes to spiders in our house, my sister has even cried once when a spider was killed rather then let go, even though she is terrified of most insects.

The hunting techniques of a few species are also simply fascinating. The trapdoor spider and the gladiator spider to name a few. And spiders play a critical role in helping to control other insect species. No one likes mosquitoes.

Not to mention spider webs are just beautiful to look at...

i don't kill them, I try to avoid them or put them outside or blow on them to make them run back into corners/cracks/elsewhere

and try to get them to crawl on paper when I find them in the bathtub.

they go in for water droplets but cannot crawl out

I N.E.V.E.R. kill any living creature, I think spiders have just the right to live here as we do, and that they shouldn't get stepped on.

Poor spiders =( All because people think they are digusting animals, they are hated.

*AHEM* People! Spiders catch the flys in our houses! And, what do you know? People kill them.

I personally don't like spiders and usually end up killing them. x_x I usually kill any bug, though.
If a spider is outside, I'll just walk *cough* run *cough* away from it and leave it be. They play a great role by catching bugs that are unwanted in their stunning spider webs. I don't like them at all, though. They just creep me out... I mean, 8 legs and all...

Understandable. ^^ I know most of the rest of my family hates spiders; it's all a matter of the experiences you've had with them. I grew up in a house basically infested with them - these little brown things I still can't identify, black widows, wolf spiders, etc. - so I'm honestly pretty nonchalant abut them as far as them being in the house. I've even been bitten several times. I'm just like "Oh look, a spider, pretty, let's put him out in the garden. 8D" when I find them.

Our spider of the week:

Image

The Costa Rican Zebra Tarantula, a burrowing spider that inhabits Central America.

Fun facts:

-Females live up the 20 years.
-These guys eat roaches in the wild. How's that for keeping the population of creepy crawlies down?

I LOVE spiders. I think it's so sad when people kill them for no reason - it's sad and these creatures deserve as much of a life as we do. I love and don't kill ANY living thing, bug or specimen when I can help it. I watched a program ages ago and totally REGRETTED IT. it was about people standing on spiders in their houses and killing them etc etc but in detail. I literally cried and held my ears to my head when my dad was listening to it x_x
He likes spiders too, mind you, so I don't know why he was watching it. But anyways, I hated it. I haven't always been a bug lover, I must admit that when I was in year 1 I used to stamp on all the ants, but now I regret it. I lovee bugs now :D ~sparkle~
I'm British and yes, I have a cool accent.
