(I was thinking, the vermin could storm the abbey, the redwallers could drive them out, but Retto would be knocked out. Then when he's 'asleep' in the hospital wing, he could overhear a conversation about him between 2 maybe 3 redwallers?)

Retto followed Skipper towards the kitchen. His ears flickered.

Retto siffed the air and his mouth watered. It was food he'd never smelt before, but for some reason, he felt like he knew them.

Skipper looked around and saw some pies cooling on a window sill. He pointed to them, "You can have one of those if you like."
