NightWings wrote:I just had a really, really bad scare this morning. Milky Way, my female albino rat, was doing just fine. I was playing with her and a half an hour or so after I'd given her and her sister, Twix, food, my sister yelled at me to come look at Milky Way. My rat appeared to be vomiting up some weird mucus or something. I freaked out because I knew rats couldn't vomit... This had to be something really serious. I went online and discovered, to my horror, that my little baby was exhibiting symptoms of choking. She could breathe, so I could only wait and see if it would come out on its own from her throat. After putting her in a quiet room of the house, I picked her up and bounced her up and down gently with her mouth facing the floor, and more of the gooey stuff came out- but she'd stopped making funny noises and appeared to be fine, just a little tired. At the moment she is sleeping ins her cage beside her sister.
Can anyone tell me if I did the right thing? I'm still really worried about her, because she doesn't have any energy and she hasn't eaten anything all day since after choking.

Saddly she probbably has rat lung disease (Mycoplasma) I can guarantee that every single pet rat in the world has this unless spotted by a vet and treated at a younge age. It is a respatory condition caused by bacteria, all rats get it during birth. It causes the red mucus to come from the nose and sneezing ect. The chances are your rat could had been choking on the mucus from that, best think to do is take them both to the vets as it is extreamly contagious, the vet might be able to get rid of it.

Your little one should be just fine, but you should be sure she is drinking.
