Prologue
Jemir gasped in suprise as he tripped over a stone. Arms and legs trembling, he tried to get up, but his body failed.
They were following him. He could hear them. They were closer each time. His only thought was: Run, run! But he couldn't.
He groaned as he got to his feet. They were coming!Two tears ran across his pale and scratched face. There was no hope. They would find him. They would get him.
"Why do I have to die like this?" was his last thought before being buried by the complete darkness.
Chapter 1- The house in the forest
Jemir awoke to see a wood and straw roof above him. Confused , he tried to get up, but a piercing pain shot through his back as he did so.
He let out a groan, suddenly remembering what had happened last night.
"Where am I?" he whispered to himself.
"In a safe place" said a loud voice.
Jemir looked around, startled. He was in a little wooden hut. In a corner, there was a small table and two chairs, also made out of wood. He was on the only bed in the room, but he could see a bundle of cloth next to the wall, probably for another one. A stream of light came in through the only window, which was on the opposite wall from where he was and was wide open.
At first, he didn't see anyone. The house was totally empty. Nobody to be seen.
Suddenly, his eyes fixed on a figure next to the window. It was a person.
Jemir narrowed his eyes. It was hard to see the person, sitting perfectly still, but he was sure it was a man. Yes, it was, and an old man aswell. Not very old, but his longish hair was gray and his forehead was slightly wrinkled.
Now that he had spotted him, Jemir could see him better. He was a strong, wide shouldered man, dressed with brown clothes and wearing big boots. Two bright blue eyes sparkled friendly at him under his low eyebrows.
"Good morning, lad" said the man in a friendly voice "or I should say good evening, for it is nearly sunset"
It was true. The shadows inside the house had started to turn reddish under the light that came in through the window
"Um... G-Good morning" stammered Jemir, not quite sure what to say.
"No need to be scared, young lad" said the old man"You are safe now"
"Who are you? Where am I?" Jemir was confused. Last night he had been about to die in the middle of the woods, and now he was here, with this strange man.
"Ahh" chuckled the man" well, I am known by lots of names, but you can simply call me Lez. And, for your second question, well, you are in my house, if that is not evident enough, which is somewhere in the forest that you nearly died in yesterday"
Jemir felt loads of questions swirl up in his mind at once: What did Lez mean by that he was known by lots of names?, where exactly was he?, how come he was there?...
"I dont remember coming here" he said, hoping Lez would give him a clear answer.
"Well, well. Of course you don't! He exclaimed. You were rescued, silly" the old man said, as if everything was funny.
"By who?"Jemir was a bit frustrated with this strange man.
"By her" replied Lez,a mischevous look on his face.
"What do you mean by her?" he was more and more frustrated
"Wait and see" chuckled Lez." She has gone hunting now, but she will come back before dark"
So Jemir decided to wait. It was no use to ask more, for he would end up more confused than before.
Chapter 2- Aylis
Jemir woke up as he heard the door opening.
He had fallen asleep without knowing it. It was dark now, and the inside of the wooden hut seemed sort of gloomy and misterious. Lez was still there, whistling and humming away to himself. He had left the window open, and Jemir began to feel cold.
The door opened, and in came a person- a hunter, to be precise.
He wore a dark cloak, with a hood on it, and had a bow and arrows on his back. He carried a fat rabbit, which made Jemir's mouth water with hunger
Jemir stayed lying down. He wanted to find out as many things as posible about where he was and what was happening, and he had the feeling that they might say something if they thought he was asleep.
“Hello, Aylis” said Lez, as he stopped whistling “Good day hunting?”
“Not bad” answered the hunter.
Jemir suddenly realized that the person who had just come in wasn't a he, but a she.
“So that is who he was talking about” he thought to himself. Jemir had thought that he was just saying silly nonsense to confuse him, or that he meant a beautiful lady with a long dress, although it was very unlikely in the middle of the forest. But he had never expected anything like this:a girl that dressed like a boy, carrying weapons and a dead rabbit.
Aylis- that is what he supposed she was called- put the bow and arrow in their place, took her cloak off, and laid the rabbit on the table.
“But I'm tired, and hungry” She yawned, whilst she sat down at the table. She wasn't facing Jemir, so he could only see her back “How is the boy?”
“Better. He will recover, he woke up earlier and seemed alright. Full of questions, he is. Reminds me of someone I know” he said with a grin.
Aylis grunted, as she suddenly turned and looked at him. Quickly, Jemir shut his eyes, hoping that she didn't realize that he was awake.
But she did. Slowly, she came walking over to where he was, till Jemir could feel her breath on his shoulder.
“ I know you are awake”She said.
Jemir opened his eyes. She was right in front of him, and their eyes met.
She was younger than he had thought at the beggining, probably about his age. Her long black hair was in a tight ponytail. She was quite thin, and her big blue eyes seemed like two lights on her face.
Jemir sighed as he got up. His body ached because of the run through the forest. He stayed sitting up in the bed.
“ My name is Aylis” she said kindly, standing up. “Yesterday I saw you behind a bush, so I brought you here”
“My name is Jemir”He answered.
“You are probably hungry” she said as she walked towards the table. “ I was about to cook this rabbit, so I will do it now”
“Yes please” Jemir answered.
Aylis sat down and started to skin the rabbit with her hunting knife. Meanwhile, Lez stayed beside the window, watching her.
“ Come on Lez” she said after a few minutes. “Help me and stop sitting there doing nothing”
“Ha!, do you really think that I am not doing anything?”He answered with a loud laugh. “ I am thinking, of course”
Aylis grumbled as she rolled her eyes.
“Is he always like this?” asked Jemir, raising an eyebrow.
“Yes, you will eventually get used to it” she looked at Lez with a grin, whilst he started to laugh as loudly that everyone would have thought he was hyper or mad.
Chapter 3-Memories
Jemir recovered quickly. They discovered that he had a broken wrist, but other than that there wasn't anything very serious.
It had been nearly a week now, and Jemir had began to get used to the little house and its occupants. Lez was still equally confusing and strange as the first day, but other than he thought, he wasn't mad at all, and sometimes he even went out hunting with Aylis. This left Jemir a lot of time to think, to think about his past:
He had lived all his life in a small village in the kindom of Freywa. Most people were farmers or had other simple jobs, and they lived quite poorly.
Jemir didn't have any parents, and had never met them or knew who they were. The town's blacksmith had found him on his doorstep, and had raised him only because his wife insisted on it . When she had died because of some unknown disease, his adoptive father had become arrogant and mean, especially with him, for he said he was what caused his wife's death. So Jemir had been living in unfair conditions till a few days ago...
In the middle of the night, the small village was surised being attacked by huge feroucious monsters. Luckily, Jemir had been in the outskirts, where he usually went at night without nobody seing, and was able to run into the forest at time.
But still, they had followed him. Jemir was only able to see a few glimpses of them: black shadows moving between the trees. They were about to get him, but luckyly he had fallen into a bush and they hadn't found him.
Jemir had asked Aylis over and over again if she had seen anything strange in the forest that night, but she always replied that there was nothing strange there except him.
When he had told them this, Lez showed up a sudden interest, and then grew serious and quiet. It was very strange for him to do so. Jemir was sure that something strange was going on.
