I suggest using a baby shampoo when washing, such as Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo. You want any soap to be extremely gentle.
You also need to not get soap near the eyes, water near the ears, etc. My babies get bathed in the sink with about 2 inches of warm water in it. I use my hands to scoop water over their backs and get them wet, then rub a very VERY tiny amount of shampoo onto their backs (and onto Romeo's belly, since he can't walk too well and tends to drag through messes). I rub that in, then scoop water to rinse the first time. Then I drain all of the water and turn the faucet on, so the water is lukewarm, and run that across their backs so all the soap is out. It is over very quickly. Then I rub them dry and give them each a treat.
