"I don't think you should jump to conclusions-" protested Melody, unwilling to blame Tessa-Rose for something so horrid. Emerald didn't hear her, of course; she was always so impulsive, dashing off here and there, never staying in one place long enough to think things through properly. The quartermaster sat in the dirt for a while yet, then cleared her throat and stood up carefully. "Jack," she said, hesitating, "I hate to ask this, but... well, what actually killed Sonja? I mean, obviously that's a hell of a head wound, but maybe she wasn't clubbed at all. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe she and Tessa-Rose were... having an argument, yes, that's it, and Sonja tripped over something and hit her head on the ground." She paused, trying to see reason in her new theory. It was there, tentatively. "So... I mean, you're a cook. You must know how animals work, at least a little bit. Can you tell what killed her?"
Liam heard a shout from down the road and looked up, surprised. Emerald was running towards him, yelling his name at the top of her voice. He glanced at Gannet, who shrugged and mouthed the word girls. Liam chuckled, then stood up and nonchalantly dusted off his trousers before going out to meet his crewmate. "Emerald," he said, trying to act as though he were glad to see her. In reality, his voice was quiet and dangerous. "What is all this nonsense? With Tessa-Rose, Sonja, and the cap'n injured, who knows what else could happen? Now, tell me, what's going on? Why are you in such a hurry?"
