Tessa pulled a face as she remembered her childhood. It was painful, thinking about how she had grown up on both land and on a ship. "I was born in London. My mother looked after me." She began, not daring to look at Sonja. "When I was around nine, I met my father and he and my mother had decided that we would go and live in the New Land, America or the Caribbean. But we were unable to get on a merchant ship." She paused, taking a deep, shaky breath. "We boarded a pirate vessel, and we were caught by the Navy. They mistook my parents as pirates and I had to watch them hang."

"That's awful," said Sonja, glancing at her. She didn't like the Navy any more than she liked the prospect of being killed by them, especially after being imprisoned for a week in London before the crew had been able to break her out. "If you don't mind my asking, why did you join a pirate crew after your parents were killed like that?" Sonja hoped that Tessa-Rose wouldn't think she was prying; she was just curious as to her motives.

"I didn't want to in the beginning." Tessa began, closing her eyes and screwing up her face. When she opened her eyes, she turned her head to Sonja and locked gazes with her. "But I was already classed as a pirate. I couldn't do anything else after. So I decided that I should just live up to the label." She finished, tearing her gaze away and looking at her feet.

"Well," replied Sonja with a smile, "We're glad to have you, no matter how you got here." She clapped Tessa-Rose on the shoulder and then added, "You're one of the best gunners we have, if I do say so myself." Then she stuck her hands into the pockets of her trousers and kept walking, thinking about how awful it must have been to grow up on a pirate ship without parents. Although, it wasn't exactly a rare occurrence. Ingo had grown up on the streets before Alexa and Liza picked her up as part of the Maiden's crew, and even Sonja herself thought of the ship as more of a home than the places she had lived before.

Tessa watched as the navigator walked away, cocking her head to the side so her partically-dreadlocked hair fell over her shoulder and her face, obscuring her eyes from view. Her arms moved to hug herself around the waist and she sank to the floor, all the feelings that she had bottled up washing over her.
"We're glad to have you, no matter how you got here." She had said. "You're one of the best gunners we have, if I do say so myself." She had complimented her, despite their many differences and arguments.
A tear slipped from the corner of her eye and traveled down her cheek at a steady pace, dropping from her chin and landing on her breeches.
Can I really jus' pull out me pistol an' shoot 'er? Can I really force meself to kill 'er? Even if I did, the crew would know who it was, and then I'd be left 'ere. The Navy would fin' me, an' I'd be 'anged.

Unaware of the turmoil behind her, Sonja made her way across the empty field to the fence that ran along one edge. She placed a hand on one of the fence-posts and watched as a shepherd and two dogs moved a flock over a hill and out of sight into the sunrise. It was odd, how many things she could remember. If she had wanted to, she could have called those dogs to her and commanded them as she had done at home, and yet she could have sworn that such knowledge had been long lost to her. With a sigh, then navigator turned around and trudged back towards Tessa-Rose and the house. "Will you help me collect the crew?" she asked absently as she passed the gunner, being too preoccupied to notice the woman's tears. "We need to get to work."

The navigtor's voice roused Tessa from her thoughts and whirlling emotions, and the gunner give her a tense nod, pushing herself up from the ground standing. However, she was standing stooped over, her arms still wrapped around her middrift, head down. Her whole body was shaking. Now, it wasn't just from grief. Sonja, despite her kind words, wasn't so contrite. Definately not. So now Tessa was shaking with anger as well. She couldn't act on it yet.

Pausing for a moment to look back, Sonja saw that Tessa-Rose was standing hunched over with her arms around her middle. "Are you alright?" she asked, concern in her voice. She didn't want any more of the crew spending time in the sickbay; any injuries or illnesses would only put all of them further into debt. "If you're caught something, we can have Jack take a look at you. He seems good enough with medical things. I would say talk to Betty, but she stayed behind with the captain."

Tessa shook her head. "I'm not okay, but I'm not ill." She whispered. It wasn't a kind whisper, but one tainted with her anger, her fury, and her bloodlust. Forcing herself to remain strong, she unraveled her arms from around herself and listed her head, standing tall. Her eyes narrowed and her hand moved towards her pistol. She payed no heed to the concern in the gunner's voice as she pulle out the pistol and held it, aiming for Sonjas face. "I'm just sick of you."

The navigator had taken a half step forwards, but froze when Tessa-Rose pulled the pistol out of her belt. She kept her arms at her sides, a little ways out from her body, but the gunner must have known that she was unarmed. Otherwise she wouldn't have done something so risky. "Let's not bring a gun to a fistfight," said Sonja, turning her hands palm-forwards to show Tessa-Rose that she had no weapons. "I'm unarmed, see?" The navigator knew when she was beaten, and this was- much to her displeasure- one of those times. She didn't know how she was going to get out of it, unless she could talk the gunner into lowering her pistol. She tried to keep calm, but in truth, she was terrified. Sonja had been at death's edge a number of times- it came with the territory, when one was a pirate- but never at the hand of a mutineer. She kept her mouth shut about it, though; pissing off the person who held the gun was never a good idea, not in any circumstances and certainly not in these. She couldn't help but make one last quip, though; "Nice choice of words. A good pun."
