I was taking AP classes by my junior year in High school, almost 5-6 years ago. I had doubts that you would remember the initial hype since TLK came out when I was still in elementary school (1994)--I assumed you were still an infant then.
Anyway, I understood it as a phrase of respect since that's all it's ever used for. Our own culture has enough issues in terms of its language (especially greetings) that it seems redundant to criticize a movie over it.
If it really wasn't that good, Hollywood's gotta step it up a few notches because it's been a LONG time since I walked out of a theater feeling like I did after Avatar. I've never seen a 'realistic' fictional world so fleshed out. There were even insects hovering around in some of the scenes. I feel like it'd make a great MMORPG, but I doubt they'll go that far with it. ;p
EDIT: Fourth Shrek = Fail. ;p Talk about beating something into the ground.
