CHAPTER THREE
----- So, I've learned a bunch about my new friend.
----- First of all his name is Bradley, but he told me to just call him Brad. He didn't used to be this tall and such, but it happened soon after his dad died. He didn't know what was happening to him, but he knew what had happened to his dad, because his dad was a doctor, and one night, Brad was in his office looking around for something, then saw those papers sticking out of a file near his dad's computer. He couldn't resist, and read the whole thing. He wasn't scared until his dad got sick with all the symptoms listed on the file, then died. Then he had started growing, but luckly his clothes somehow grew with him. Then he ran away, looking for people like him. And me. He's 15 - a year younger than me- but he treats me and protects me like I'm his younger sister. I'm getting used to his extreme height, I'm very proud to say, because it's a hard thing to do. He's told me he's taller than 10 feet.
----- It's been three nights since I've met Brad, and its been pretty hard. First of all, we can't go into the city during the day. Because a person like Brad would attract too much attention, and then we'd be dealing with media, police, and random people. So we can only go there at night, and try to scrounge up some food from the dumpsters.
----- And the nights are really cold, but usually not for me. Brad uses his jacket to keep me warm. It's like a big fuzzy blanket. But I usually worry about Brad. I know he wants me to think he's all tough and stuff, but I know he's cold, and I'm not really helping my using his jacket.
----- We're usually really hungry, so I go off into the city during the day and try to steal somthing from a food stand, or try and get some food from people who feel bad for me. I have to get a lot though, because Brad has an enormous appitite. I think he feels bad for eating so much, but I really don't mind. I feel like I owe it to him for telling me the truth about the world, and helping me.
----- Before one of my daily scrounging trips, I was thinking about a question I had never really asked Brad before. "Brad," I said, getting his attention. "How did you know I was ressistant?" He looked at me, then answered. "I really don't know... I just somehow got a feeling that that girl over there, was just like me." He smiled. "Except, for, ya know, the size." He liked to tease me about how small I was, and I liked to tease him about how big he was. More like a little inside joke inbetween us. But then his face was serious. "That night, I had this strange urge to go into town, and I wasn't sure why, but I felt like I HAD to. So I did. Then when I saw you, I knew you were special." I nodded. "Do you think I can sense people like us too... If there are any more?" He shook his head. "I'm not sure..."
----- I came back with half a cooked steak, three donuts, a turkey leg, some green beans, and for dessert, I found a a barely eaten gallon of icecream.
----- As me and Brad ate in silence, I heard some dogs barking. I thought nothing of it at first, but then I realized there was about four different barks, and they sounded mean. Then they got closer, and closer, and closer. I saw Brad tense up, and he kept eyeing me, and the direction from which the sound came from. It got louder, and I thought I might faint from fright, it just stopped. All you could hear was the night-time sounds, like owls, and crickets, and branches knocking together. Brad scooted closer to me. "Can you climb trees?" he asked in a whisper. "Yes..?" I said in confusion. "Then go climb one!" he said in a louder whisper. I quickly obeyed, leaving my food, and find the tree with the shortest branch. I kept looking, and looking, and then I looked back at Brad. He was standing up, his fists balled up. He looked angry, and I would sure have feared him if he wasn't my friend. I heard a crack near me, and then another. My breathing quickened, and my heart beat got much more rapid. I started looking quickly for a low branch, but I could find one. By now I was in a panic, trying to be quiet, but being clumsy instead, and making a lot of noise. Brad was focused somewhere else, and I thought the treat was gone. Boy, was I wrong.
----- Right behind me, a large dog emerged, it's eyes bright red, and I could hear it's heavy breathing. There were three other big dogs that came out behind it, growling. Brad had walked off, so I took a step back, stepping on a twig, and it snapped in half. The biggest dog, in the front, took that as a sign to attack. It unged forward, but I dodged out of the way, and started running. I ran through vines, and bushes, and thorns, ducking beaneath branches. They were pounding after me, their heavy breathing quickening. I could hear their barks, and growls, deamndingfood. Demanding ME.
----- Then, rushing out from the side of the lead dog, Brad appeared, and slammed right into him. The dog whimpered, then growled at Brad, and ran limping into the forest. I kept on running, because if I stopped, the other dogs would have caught me. The dog nearest me was so close I could feel it's hot, smelly breath on my neack, its teeth knashing, hoping to connect with my neck.
----- Then everything slowed down.
----- One of the dogs in the back went to the right, and the other went to the left, the one of front still running after me. Then, the two dogs than ran in different directions were right in front of me. The bigger one grabbed ahold of my arm, and I tried pulling it away put that was hopeless. It screamed, and blood was soon everywhere. The one that was chasing me the whole time knocked me to the ground, and the one holding my arm let go, and looked at me, like he was laughing. The one on top of me was really heavy, and I couldn't breathe. I had to push all my air out painfully just to get a breath. It looked into my eyes, lifted it's head, bared it's teeth, and bit down. But somehow... It missed my neck.
----- When I woke up, Brad was standing over me, looking down at me. When he saw that my eyes were opened, he smiled. I weakly lifted my damaged arm. "No, no," he said soothingly. "Don't use that arm." That arm had a sling, and I couldn't move around much, and it hurt like crazy. My head throbbed. "W-what..?' I croaked weakly. He sat down by me and propped me up against his chest. I looked up at him, and I saw a new fire in his eyes. A fire of revenge...

CHAPTER FOUR
----- As I lay there, my head spinning, I felt warm, and protected in his arms. My head throbbed, and I drifted in and out of sleep the whole night, Brad always there, looking down at me worried. One time in the night, as I shifted around to get more comforatble, Brad spoke to me.
----- "Hey, Lanie, you up?" and his wiggled the arm I was laying on. I grunted, and nodded my head. "I think you have a broken arm, but your head doesnt look too bad though. Does it hurt." I nodded, then snuggled deeper into his shirt, breathing in his comforting scent. As I was closing my eyes, he lifted me up off the ground, and held me. "I think you need a doctor or something. I never knew much about that stuff. Even though my dad kept trying to teach me." He tucked me closer to his shirt, then set off, heading for the town, even though the stars were still out. The soothing sounds of the crickets, and his heavy steps lulled back into a rythmatical sleep.
----- Brad shook me gently awake, and I was still in his arms. "Okay we're here." I was about to ask where, then I opened my eyes a bit. It was light outside, and I guessed it was about seven. We where infront of a tiny house in the middle of the country. The windows were tightly shut, and could see a faint glow of a warm fire. The little house looked cozy. I suddenly felt cold, and shivered. Brad put me between his arm and his chest, and had to get on his knees to knock on the small door. He knocked lightly, then heard nothing. I though no-one was home, then heard some footsteps coming. A man of average height opened the door. He hade little glasses, and curly brown hair. It was all messy, and it looked like he had just woken up, He had a hot cup of coffee in his hands. His eyes opened wide when he saw Brad, then he shook. His coffee was on the verge of tipping. Brad putme down infront of the man, but still close to him. I wobbled a little, then Brad's giant hand stabled me. Then he got even more frightened. His mouth opned, then closed. A drop of coffee dripped onto the snow, and sizzled.
----- "We need your help." he said to the shaking man. The man slowly pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, then blinked a few times. "H-h-help?" He pointed to himself. "F-from me?" He looked up at Brad, then widened his eyes in disbelief. Then he looked at me. I smiled weakly. He shook his head. "I don't what's going on, or who either of you are, but this girl looks like she needs help." He took a step near me, then looked up at Brad, and took two steps back into his house. "The girl can stay until she's better, but you..." he said, looking at Bradley. Brad drew himself up to his full height, and shook his head. He towered over the man, and even his house. I was pretty sure he was more like 14 feet tall. Probably taller. "No, I'll stay near. I can look after myslef." He looked down at me again, then I ran over to him, and hugged his leg.I looked up at him, not wanting to got o this starnge man. He smiled down at me, then bent all the way down so I could hear him. "If this guy tries to hurt you," He said in a whisper, "Just call out the window, or something. I'll always be near." I stood on my tiptoes and kissed his nose. "I'll be fine," I said, trying to convince him and me. He stood up resistantly, then look at the man. "Don't you dare try and hurt her or..." He didnt even have to finish the sentence. The man rushed away from Brad, and into his house, then waved at me urgently to come in. I took one last look at Brad before dissapearing behind the man, the door closing firmly shut behind me.
-----The man was actually very nice. His name was Dean, and he lived alone. He was a doctor, but he traveled to his paintent's homes, never setting up an office ever. He told me I had a broken bone in my arm, and just a minor concussion that would ease away after about two weeks. He fed me, and took good care of me. He never really talked much, just tended to my wounds.
----- I slept on the couch in the living room, by a big window, and Brad would sometime come and sit by it, then I would open it up and talk to him. He said it wasn'[t very fun without me, but he had a welcome back surprise for me whenever I got back. I was so excited. Dean had forbidden me from going outside, beacuse the cold would do something bad. I forget. Doctors talk like aliens. I missed being otside, and hanging out with Brad all the time.
----- The day Dean decreed me healthy, I was feeling much better. I gave him a hug, then said goodbye, and ran out to meet Brad. He was sitting on the ground smiling. I ran over to him, and hugged his. He hugged me back lightly, ten kept one hand behind his back. I tried peeking around his back, but his free hand pick me up, and set me down farther back. "Close your eyes." He said, and I did so like a little kid getting a new toy. He put something warm and furry in my hand, and when I opened up my eyes, I squealed. It was a little puppy! It was all black, and had bright blue eyes. It was so fulffy and looked like a wolf! I hugged it, and it licked me all over, barking. "Oh Brad! I love it!" He smiled. "It's a wolf pup." He said. "I found it wondering the woods all alone. And I thought of you!" He smiled, then said, "It's a boy, so no dumb girly names." I punched him, still smiling. "He won't have no dumb girly name!" I shall name him..." I thought for a while, while his nuggled into me. "I wil name him Akino!" I hugged him, then set him down, watching his play in the snow. Brad nodded. "Good name." I scooped Akino back up, and he shivered. I shivered too, so Brad rolled his eyes and picked me and Akino up, and tucked us inbetween his chest and his arm. He smiled down at me, and I smiled back at him. Akino sure like doing this. He was crawling all over Brad's arm, and Brad had to hold him still to keep him from falling down.
-----Then he took us into a small little forest bordering a small city. We set up camp, and Akino fell asleep on Brad's leg, so I got comfotable right next to Akino, and fell asleep, looking at the stars through the branches of the trees, and falling asleep happy.
