it bothers me on dA or other places where people are like ARTWORK COPYRIGHT ME (C) when the art isn't that great or they obviously don't have a copyright. Copyrights cost money, and take time to process. you can't just decide that a picture you drew is suddenly copyrighted. I mean I don't know how it works in other countries, but that's the way it is in the US.

I do that to mine so people don't steal it. *shrug* While I didn't pay for it to be copyrighted, I'm pretty sure it does say on dA that artwork is copyright to their artists.

I no longer say copyright, since I don't have one. Now if I a character I say, for example "King belongs to Wendigo" not "King (c) Wendigo."

I'm also tired of seeing "design (c) me! Don't steal!" or in Sparkledog artist speak "MINEMINEMINE DON'T STEAL OR I'LL KILL YOU ADHGSKFGKF." Unless you show me the copyright, don't give me the "DON'T STEAL!" crap. And why would anyone want to steal your horrible character design?

It's especially laughable when they threaten to sue for stealing a character design. I want to steal a character and when they threaten to sue, laugh and tell them to go ahead. No lawyer will waste their time on something so stupid.

from my understanding, dA has something called a 'creative commons' license, that is kind of like a partial copyright to the artists. I could be wrong, though. I was more talking about the obnoxious THIS IS MINE NO STEALING on every little thing.

guys listen up. since it seems people are a little misinformed on the whole ideal of copyright laws.

it doesn't necessarily take, 'money' to get a copyright. and it doesn't necessarily take extensive work to obtain one. basically, anything derived by an artist, whether it be drawings, crafts, writings, etc, is INSTANTLY considered copyrighted from the moment of it's creation. henceforth why people add the (c) to any piece created. there is also a thing called a poor mans copyright. where you basically take any creation (the original), mail it to yourself, and do not open it. which is considered a legal document in any court of law. also, there are dmc takedowns where material you do not wish used that you created can be removed from any sites they are on, since permission was not granted by yourself. on every other game but here (surprisingly this topic is being treated as lax as its been) that i play on, art theft is severely frowned upon and despised to a degree where it's taken pretty seriously. i can say for myself, even i've enforced my rights to the fullest extent when it comes to my art.

this may not be the case for everyone. but, there are those of us that wish to protect what we create. we are nice enough to share these wonderful creations with the world and we don't expect them to be taken away in pure malice. i have a creature called the nacknar, and if anyone tried to steal them, i will extract my rights. just because i wish to protect my work, doesn't mean that people who don't take it seriously should think i am being some rude jerk because i place the (c) label and demand it not being stolen. it is -my- creation and i don't want someone who didn't put the time, effort and determination into it's creation to claim they did.

i swear, if youlanda from furcadia saw this topic, she'd tear it up one side and down the other since she feels even stronger about protecting artwork then i do. i didn't think there was anyone this lax on cr laws. sheesh.

oh btw, why don't you guys point tess to this topic? she may not be happy to see that people aren't taking art theft and cr laws seriously. why do you think she put: http://www.chickensmoothie.com across every pet? hmmm hmmm maybe she doesn't want her templates stolen. they /ARE/ her creations and work. >.<

oh you would be surprised on just WHAT lawyers will take on. not to mention, you can easily obtain the poor mans copyright as i stated in my previous post which takes all but what? a few postage stamps and that IS a legal document. cr pattens are basically used for market purposes. that protects you from theft AND makes it legal when you sell those to companies so you get an awarded percentage of the profits from any sales made on your work.

just because someone puts in bold, captial letters: DO NOT STEAL, doesn't mean they are being obnoxious. it just may be cause they have been subjected to theft before in the past and do not want their work stolen again. i challenge anyone to come back to me after their work was stolen and they put a lot of time and effort into the piece and tell me just how you feel about it then. i am sure you won't be as weak minded about afterwards.

Geez, harsh much? O-o I know Wendigo hates art theft. I don't know Kohaku well, but I'm sure they don't believe in art theft either. I don't know much about copyrights, so I won't say anything about that. But really? NO ONE said art theft was okay. And calling them weak minded? That's just rude.

Oh no. I support shaming art thieves, I don't support it one bit. I'm a pretty big crusader against traced anime bases on DA.

It's not really the issue of copyrights. It's how it's worded. "I worked hard on this, don't copy" is better than "MINEMINEMINEMINE STEAL AND I'LL KILL YOU AND FEED YOUR CORPSE TO A SPARKLEWOLF"

I kno what you mean...though I say (C) for lack of a better thing to say, to show who owns the art/character/etc. I get hat you mean though. ^^
