Spaying is definitely more common in the US/Canada than it is in the UK. I know that I wouldn't routine spay them though, for a few reasons. It is a big operation, very intrusive, and it's usually very painful for them after the operation. They'll need strong pain relief and not all vets seem to give the right medicines. Speaking of vets, you need a really experienced vet who is going to do the operation properly. With neutering boys it is just a 10 minute operation - spaying is opening them up and a lot more tricky than that.

There is no proof that spaying completely stops tumours.
There are people who have had their girls spayed and still ended up with them getting tumours.
It doesn't stop all types of tumours, only hormone related, obviously stops pyometra as well.

My vet wouldn't spay rats routinely and I really value her opinion.
Not trading.

I personaly wouldn't get my rats spayed or neutered as what is a small oporations for us is huge for a rat. They are tiny and so much could go wrong, I personaly just wouldn't mix oposite genders.
____

lol my rats just escaped from there cage and were exploring my bedroom lol. Marlo was finding it amusing when I tried to catch him. He was creeping out then when I went to get him he bounded back it then popped his head out again lol. He was then chasing my hand until he touched it then would run away again lol. I got him though eventualy when he came out and sat on my lap lol.
Sorry for my slow response time on RP's. My new job steals ALL my time. :(

I have to tell you that I'm desperately worried for your rat, I would bring him/her to the vet a.s.a.p because my mouse was just like that before she passed on. I'm not exactly sure the exact lifespan of a rat though.

They live 2-5 years, but after 2, most rats start to show their age. Both of my girls lived to three before I got my new babies. Aphrodite was skin and bones before I had her put to sleep. Watch her. Is she moving alot? Lethargy, dehydration, malnutrition are not good in any animal, especially rats, because they're pretty delicate. If you can, buying some quality, specifically for rats food may help her. I suggest taking her to a vet as soon as you can, because, honestly, we're not professionals. (: I do hope the bes for her!

My girls totally destroyed my blanket. It was meant to keep some of their cage covered from the cold and the dogs, but they decided it would be better for bedding. Thanks, guys. I love you too :3

I will have my does all spayed, have no reason not to do it, IMO.

Metacam is plenty for after the operation and with a good vet there' not a huge risk.
