He blew impatiently out of his mouth, staring out into the pouring rain. He'd only been gone from the Redstone Valley for a week, but he still missed the place. Hamish did his best to lead their little band, but the only results Scarecrow could see were bad. The whole pack was wet and shivering, even the fiery-tempered Damon and the thick-pelted Sharpsnow. He looked a little guiltily at his sister, Cherry. She wouldn't even be out here, in this wet, if he and Spyke hadn't chosen to follow Hamish. He wished he were still back in the valley, in the warm caves, with the pack.
Scarecrow hated Hamish a little bit now. Once, the mossy-pelted wolf had seemed to be the best in the world. Now his firm opinions and beliefs had gotten them all banished from the Redstone Pack. He scowled and stood up to pace, shaking the thick fur from his eyes. Cherry padded over and watched him for a moment, sadly.
"Scarecrow, stop blaming yourself. I would have followed, even if you hadn't asked me to come along. You're my brother...I can't let you and Spyke have all the fun," she said, a little mischeivious glint entering her eyes. A fresh breeze blew in more freezing rain, and suddenly she began shivering violently (along with the rest of Hamish's pack.) With a furious bark, Scarecrow ran out of the cave. He couldn't stand watching his sister freeze to death, couldn't stand being helpless.
He ran through the rain for who-knows-how-long. He ran as it gradually turned to hail, and then to sleet. He ran even as it began to snow, tiny flakes gently swirling past his face. Finally, he collapsed, panting heavily. Scarecrow didn't have the energy to keep going, and just lay there as snow slowly began covering him. He dozed lightly, waking up to the jingle of harnesses and the yells of a human. Bi-colored eyes opened slowly, to find the source of the noise. He stared in amazement at the sight of a dogsled bounding through the snow. He was particularly entranced by one young husky, who ran gracefully in the 'Swing' position.
Scarecrow rose, shaking snow from his fur, to watch the dogteam as they ran away, towards a small shack and kennel by the edge of a forest. Then he followed, detirmined to find out what the white husky's name was. He hid by the woodstack until night, watching as the huskies paced and played. Finally, he crept forward, towards the solo pen the young female was in. One of the male huskies watched him for a moment, before ignoring him. The rest of the huskies seemed to follow the lead, totally ignoring the young wolf.
He crept up to the chainlink fence surrounding the young female, and pawed it lightly. She shrank away, watching Scarecrow with fearful eyes.
"It's okay," he said hoarsly, "I...I won't hurt you. My name is Scarecrow. What're you called?"
"Idun," she answered carefully. "The master named me after the Norse goddess of youth." and apples, she added silently, but she wasn't about to tell HIM that. "I...I'm pleased to make your aquentance. Would...would you like to spend the night? It's going to turn into a blizzard out there..."
