It's necessary. We keep rats on soft substrate and they cannot wear their nails down like they do in the wild, so we have to help them out. We clip dog and cat and bird nails too.
The rats will be just fine.

My ratties hate nail clippings, but I do it every so often, when their nails start digging in to my shoulder when they climb up there.

My rats do not mind having their nails clipped. Most of them manages to keep them short by themselves, but some rats needs to have their nails clipped. I usually do it only before shows or when their nails are very sharp.
