Salemandre are a unique breed that only appear during severe natural storms or disasters, depending on which element they connect to the most. When threatened, they are capable of defending themselves by producing natural chemicals to stun predators. The actual chemical produced depends on the breed. While some simply paralyze, others may also poison, or cause hallucinations.
Interestingly, a Salamandre who willingly gives its blood to another can give them the same immunity that they have. For example, if a Darkness one gives its blood, the receiver will become immune to any plague or becoming able to survive on limited food rations. A fire salemandre can allow an individual to be literally fireproof. Very rare occurrences of this have been recorded, but it is an extremely effective cure.

They are otherwise very, very hard to even spot, and most instances of them being seen have been pushed off as mere urban legends. Leather made from their hide is impervious to their element, but is considered to be cruel and unusual to harvest, though many have tried.
