Re: Plainrunners - New Species

Oh boy, and that's in small type too... X{ And sorry it wasn't a paragraph, 'got carried away.

Name: Plainrunners- Given for their fast, agility due to their long legs, and as they run across their homeland, the African plains.

Main Characteristics: 3 feet and a half tall at the shoulder, they are fairly tall and are slightly taller than a cheetah. They have short bodies, but their long legs make up for their lack of height. Plainrunners usually eat much to keep strength in their legs. They can run up to (70? Not sure, no speed.) mph, and gain speed easily with the help of their legs. They have a very long tail, some reaching nearly four feet long, but it isn't a bother to them when they run or walk because it flows back easily. Plainrunners also have large ears with tufts as well on the inside, giving them exceptional hearing all around, given up to a mile or so away. Of course they won't hear specifically, like constant chatter or so between others, but will hear the usual murmur that gives them away.

Colour: They can be just about any color, but in this region, it is dangerous to be a bright or neon, basically other-worldly color. In these vast plains, they are similar to the world around them, being from a dark mossy green of a spare rock or so, to the golden shine of the dried grass and sandy dirt. They are mainly gold and such, but some have special markings, especially the females. Plainrunners inhabit this land with camouflage, their fur matching at least one part of their habitat, and if not, are to most likely be killed. Albinos will be prone to sun damage, so be careful if you are one. Albinos and melanistic Plainrunners are most certainly not guaranteed a long life, but they do live it to the fullest either way. Anyway, these animal's pelts aren't just mainly the basic color, and like said before, inhabit this land with camouflage. But, there can be some with striking marks and patterns, that although may not fit with the land, fit with what is in the land. For example, one that exhibits long dark stripes along the back with a dark reddish pelt even will be like a wildebeest, but without the horns. Then again, one's dark ears could seem to be, from a distance. Younger Plainrunners are no different, but their fur is a bit light and one solid color at first, until it reaches adulthood and adolescence, where its fur becomes the permanent pattern or color it will be. As you may know, Plainrunners have a variety of colors, and are, indeed, unique.

Diet: Their diet consists of meerkats and mongooses, and a bird or two when near trees, of course. Plainrunners can take down the occasional gazelle or zebra, and are indeed strictly carnivores. They would not get enough energy from the scarce vegetation to survive, and tree leaves are hard to get anyway, as they don't exactly have a 'falling season.'

Habitat: As said, they live in the open African plains, with only endless prey in sight, most of the time. They are lucky because they do have watering holes well covered by tree branches and leaves, but some watering holes are out in the open, and will dry up. Yet, they do fill up again, they have a cycle, and so it is so that you have to wait for it to fill up, or go find another watering spot. They each pick their own territory when they have a mate or no mate, but male Bachelor Bands are nomadic and have no territory. They will make or find dens within their suitable territory, and then remain there unless needed to move. The territory is scattered with some trees of olive green leaves, and are lean like a Plainrunner's legs. There is the occasional dried plant or ripe bush, but there are more rocks and dirt than those. There is jungles nearby, on the east side of the outer edge of their habitat, and even with the lush vegetation and fresh drinking water each day, it is still dangerous, and in other words, unwanted.

Predators: Their predators can be the dangerous kicking zebra or the armed male gazelle, but other than that, there hardly ever is another such animal on their territory....the only other predator would be each other, even, if one should get into a ordeal.

Interesting Facts: Females have wings, and although they are beautiful, mainly, they can't fly with them. Certainly, it would not be able to pick up the Plainrunner, no matter how light. Males don't have wings, and female pups don't have them at first. Soon, they would grow during adolescence, and can even flap them a few times and rise a inch or so, but soon they fall within a minute back to the ground. Females can flap their wings, but not fly, as said. Their wings are for so, however. The inside is the same color as they are, and will fold them down to their sides if needing to camouflage...for, the outside is a vibrant array of color. This side is used to attract a mate, and the more vibrant colored they are, the more attractive they are. But, Plainrunners will have one mate, and one mate only, unless they get killed, for they are mates for life.

Other: A male will leave a Bachelor Band one they find a mate, and are extremely loyal to their family by nature. Also, Bachelor Bands are made up of young males, and even so, Plainrunners are not exactly social.
