I'm sorry I couldn't save you......
Wax slowly dripped down the sides of the candles burning luminously in the old church. No one was there to see them...but her. When she breathed, the flames would dance, trying to avoid the fatal winds threatening their lives....so fragile, delicate.
Just like you.....
She rested her hand on the smooth, polished dark oak casket, running her fingers along the intertwining orchids engraved in the old wood.
How did we come to this?
She smiled and choked out a small laugh as tears ran down her scarred face.
What would you think of me now, crying like this?
Her fingers touched the soft, silky petals of the white orchids lying on the casket.
Why did it have to be her, God? Why her?Story?
The first snow fall of winter. The first winter that she would be alone. The girl, no more than seven or eight, shivered as she took shelter under the old stone bridge. When she was little, her mother and father would take her sledding out by the village boundaries, and tell her fables of cities where there were no limits. People were free to become what they wanted to be, live their lives as they chose. Her mother even told her once of a time when people chose their own mates, instead of being given one. She had thought her parents were insane, these-these stories were simply atrocious. She thought herself stupid to even, just for one minute, wonder if these tales just might, possibly, be real.
She watched the snow gently blow under the bridge as the wind changed direction. It was almost as if it were forcing her from hiding. The girl knew she was going to die, she was just prolonging the inevitable. They would come for her, and kill her. Because she was supposed to be dead. Her parents were dead. There was no one to take her in, nor did anyone wish to. The Council had sentenced her to be destroyed.
The snow was collecting at her feet. If she stayed any longer, she would be covered by the pristine crystals. Biting down hard as to stop her teeth from chattering, the young girl bravely made her way out from under the bridge. She was going to die, either from the cold or by the merciless hands of the Council. She shook her head. Her parents would have wanted her to run, to save herself. But on the other hand, it would be too painful to let the icy snow freeze her from the outside in.
There were no guards out tonight, it was too cold. Her fingers were immovable, and beginning to turn purple. She couldn't move her lips, nor utter a single sound. The streetlight cast barely enough illumination to dimly light the stone street. She slipped a few times on the ice, but kept shuffling through the storm.
Her father had told her a story once, of a place where the rulers, he called them a government, had actually protected the people. He said that the people had 'rights', whatever those were. Her father was crazy. Rulers kill people, not protect them. He, along with her mother, had found that out the hard way. So did she. Should I continue?

Oh yes you should ^^

"I thought you loved me.""Why would you think that?"
Rabbit grabbed her coat, correction, my coat, and threw it on as she stormed out the door, throwing a bouquet of roses onto my door step, at my feet. "Stephen, we are through!" She yelled back at me as she raced through the stormy night to her car.
"Rabbit, don't go... I thought you loved me." I pleaded into the wind, tears tugging at the sides on my eyes, snow flurries slapping my face.
"Why would you think that?" She screamed at me gruffly, in a way that was so unlike her. Angrily closing the door to her red VW Bug with such a force that I was taken aback, she got into her car. Her headlights reared on and I watched as the small car plowed through the night.
"Rabbit, come back, please. It was all a mistake. Don't go..." My cry was lost to the wind. Begrudgingly I shut the door and turned off the outside lights. There was no need to let anyone find my house tonight.
I couldn't believe she had left. She was never one to storm out of anywhere, unlike me. I fingered my collar. What had I done wrong? What had happened? Yesterday she said she loved me. Yesterday she said she cared. But today... why was today different? Why did it matter more than yesterday? Had it all been a lie? A trick?
I shook my head in attempt to clear it. Rabbit was gone. I had to get her back.
Should I continue?

It was the way they twirled, leapt, and spun. The way their eyes would
glow with mischief and secrets all their own. They owned the world that night. By the light of the twinkling lights, they danced their hearts out. Their colorful hair and gowns would swirl behind them, the glitter upon their skin catching the soft light from the tree's bulbs. The roses in their hair and their sweet perfume was intoxicating. When they leapt, they flew. When they laughed, I swore I could hear bells. When they collapsed into a fit of giggles...
Their chests would rise and fall with their need for lovely oxygen. They would hold each other close and whisper how glad they were to have such a wonderful sister. Resting from their dancing, the large Christmas tree would hover above them as their dresses puddled around them.
They were beautiful.
They were breath-taking.
But I... I was just a rat...
---
{I was thinking how these two lovely girls could be sisters and on Christmas Eve they would come out and dance beneath the Christmas tree. The Rat King would gaze upon them and perhaps fall in love with both of them. ^^" Oh, they are roughfully the size of mice. It was just an idea inspired by the season!}

She, eccentric...
Him, electric...
This pairing so unbelievable...
Death soon brought them apart...
Loveless. Her name rang true in her ears. She blinked her tears away. She had promised him she would be strong. She was eccentric to others. She was known as the Candle Lady, because all day she locked herself in her house with candles lighting every room. He was gone, and she would mourn by lighting a candle for every day he lived. She only left at nights, and at that, only at midnight. She was never out past one. One day one the way home from the store, she saw a faint fog and a glow. She walked closer. "Goldenburough!" she cried, seeing her dead boyfriend before her. Goldenburough stood still. Then, he drew closer. "I live in death" he whispered, then vanished. The next time she lit her candles, she gently kissed each flame. She was bleeding when she was done. Then, she climbed to the top of the house. She jumped down, and broke her neck. Her dying words were: "I will live on too, my darling Goldenburough."

she was a simple girl, a hidden princess who was cursed to stay in a cavern until she was wed.
he was a man of science, who traveled the ocean in search of wonderful & unknown things.
they had met while his ship was docked there for repairs. daringly, he had climbed the cliff to find her.
it seemed like love at first sight. for almost four months, he would visit her every night, telling her tales of his travels across the world.
and then he had to leave, for his ship had been repaired.
he had promised her he would return within two months, and they could be together once more. and then he gave her the candles.
"when they stop burning, your true love will be gone." he had told her.
they were still burning. they hadn't stopped since they lit them.
she had no idea that she was no longer his true love.
"he'll come back soon." she whispered, staring at the docks. "he always does."
...
I need to stop watching romantic-drama movies.
